This is the result of a search for an 8mm round garnet in the jewelry area among the loose gemstones:

You may have to cut and paste this. It shows several round, 8mm garnets.

If you don't want a real garnet...and I assure you that you can have one...here is a real ruby for you! This is a legitimate dealer, although the goods are such that Pricescopers don't usually buy there. I have to say that when I see a 3 carat red ruby there for a price like this, even I am tempted.... But the inclusions are a bit much for my taste.* Not for everyone's, mind you! But I don't like my diamonds to be below VS clarity, so not wanting to buy rubies billed as SI is in character for me.

*And note the lead glass filling.

I am a long time eBay user and when I see a relatively new vendor (someone with only around 85 pieces of feedback and then with 5 or 10 of those pieces sometimes coming from one buyer!) I am very skeptical. I tend to think that that new vendor may have some friends with e-mail accounts who are helping to give him a good reputation.

Be very, very careful!!! (You have good instincts!)

wasp,

I think you are feeling frustration. When all of this started some of us mentioned that colored gemstones are even more complicated than diamonds! You are now feeling the full brunt of that!

It is hard to believe that it is all so complicated.

The truth is that you can get a beautiful garnet for $2.00 or $5.00 0r $15.00 if you are lucky. Otherwise you may end up paying $55.00 or $90.00. It will make a gorgeous, natural stone ring and be very durable. It will be less likely to crack than an opal ring even though it was so cheap! And it will be very, very beautiful.

Or you can buy a ruby ring.... You can spend a fortune for a good ruby and if you need to be able to eat, you will find a reputable dealer who will find you a ruby that is brownish or pinkish as well as in some way included (since all rubies are). A three carat true red ruby on top of a diamond for an engagement ring is going to keep you from eating for the first few years of your marriage!

Unless you are a Rockefeller?

mmmmmmm, something tells me stay away from ebay for this, i shop on ebay plenty...........so what would an 8mm nice garnett go for from someone that pricescopers would buy from?

Don''t buy garnets from ebay - they are my obsession and trust me I have rarely found a good one there.

Talk to Rick - he''s a garnet expert and some of my finest have come from him.

Garnets are the most incredible stones - don''t believe anyone who thinks they''re just muddy reddy stones that the victorians liked. They come in many colours and have great sparkle.

The stone in my avatar is a garnet - green grossular to be precise, normally known as tsavorite. I also have red ones, purple ones, rose coloured ones, pinky purple ones with blue flashes, yellowy greenish orangish ones which sparkle like crazy. Have I convinced you that garnets are THE best thing since way before sliced bread yet?

Actually don''t look too closely - it gets expensive with a habit like mine.

Everyone is ignoring the pretty rubellite I found.

If you want a garnet, I second Rick Martin.

The pretty rubellite I found for you?

Rick can sometimes come across that way, but it doesn't mean anything and he's a great guy. I promise.

little did he know i was considering garnett, too bad

I''ve gotten very similar responses before. He is telling it like it is, though.

If one develops a taste like yours in garnets, Pandora, he may not do well on eBay, but most of are safe there. Not all of us feel about garnets the way you do. I appreciate the red ones that you call muddy, red, Victorian stones. I love all the varieties-pyrite, rhodolite, almandite, umbalite-and enjoy browsing on eBay through them. I'd go for Harriet's rubellite, too, except that it costs so much more than an eBay garnet...and it's still not a ruby!

Deb, the price is for the pair.

Wasp, you might want to reconsider posting a private e-mail. Not only is it against PS rules, it's unfair to the other party.

fixed, its also unfair to the other guys to say they sell subpar stones, that guy needs to stop and smell himself.................now, other than him, i allready am going to call richard wise , he left me his number the other day................anyone else for a garnett?

I can assure you that that was not what Rick was saying.

I wonder if this rhodolite will fit. Link

Stone: Rhodolite Garnet

Weight: 1.63 cts.

Clarity: VVS

Dimensions: 8.64x 6.34x 5.03mm

Design: Modified Round

Origin: Tanzania

Treatment: None

Cut by: John B.

Notes: This is from a new deposit recently unearthed in Tanzania . It tends to be more on the red side than on the purple side. This particular stone has a unique neon color. This is nice and unusual cut, and a great alternative to the standard round brilliant. It will easily fit into any round or cushion setting with prongs. This design is a really brilliant and is comparative to the flash of the round brilliant.

Price: $140.00

i think 8.6 is too big..........8.4 is about the biggest if im not mistaken, that sure looks nice tho

The GemRite garnet is 8 sided, so I'm guessing that the 8.6mm is the corner to corner diameter. The distance between the centers of the flat sides would be less.

In any case, another option would be to contact Gene at Precision Gem and see if he can cut you a round to fit your setting. He has some amazing rhodolite rough. I got my Umbalite from him. I'm a girl who loves rubies too, and I think these umbalites are wonderful. This is a picture of my 9-sided Umbalite.
