Hi all I was looking thru my jewelry box and noticed that I have not posted any photos of my spinel, the old link was like in 2009?! It is sitting on my old, 18k wg solitaire ring mount, I had added 6 diamonds melees on each sides. So here you go:)

Its a 6.7mm round, portuguese cut. I prefer to wear it with my platinum wedding band as I find the band too thin on its own.

Do you think it looks better on its own on with the other band?

I actually like it on it''s own!! That''s the perfect setting for it. Gorgeous.

Lovely setting. Great cut and colour for the spinel.

Hi porridge & oddoneout! Thanks for the kind comment, I am use to looking at slightly bigger stone, and I find this spinel really tiny

But I have to say that I enjoy looking at it alot, as the color is always changing, it looks like a brown zircon at times, under some light condition it looks firey-red and at times it its just orange. I usually wear this ring when I am in my casual wear, as it does not look as dramatic as those haloed ones

Beautiful stone and ring!
Thanks mare, colourv!

I was wondering if a spinel scratches easily? I understand that its 8 on the moh scale, I only wears it occasionally and certainly not when I am doing any chores. But the high setting just makes me feel that I have to be extra careful when I am wearing it, is this fear uncalled for? By the way, before setting this spinel, I had dropped it twice ( about a meter off the ground) and that is not a single chip or scratch..phew.......

I''m sure Freke can really add to this, but in my limited experience, after wearing my spinel every day, I have not noticed any scratches. There could be (haven''t louped it), but I find it to be in really good condition still. As with any stone, you should be careful, even with diamond. However, I love spinel for that added durability.

Enjoy your new ring, it''s lovely.

Lovely ring! I love the handshots as well.

oh wow I just love that! The portuguese cut really works with that stone. Would love to see photos of it showing the color shift you describe. I like it on its own but looks good with the wb, too. DEFINITELY doesn''t look too small.

Ditto TL on scratching. I haven''t noticed any on mine either. The only damage my stones have sustained would be a chip on the girdle of one of mine, but that can happen with ANY stone, so whatever.

I prefer it alone as well.

Thanks Frekechild and Indylady for the replies!

Frekechild-wow I saw your cs solitaire that is a cool collection! By the way, can I know the cause for the chip on the girdle? TIA

This is the first time I see a color gem in a simple ring like this. The tone, color and light interplay of the center piece truly draw the eyes.

I think it looks good on it''s own! Great color shifts and cut. Congrats and thanks for updated us on this.

Thanks! I have absolutely no idea.

very pretty

It’s never too late to post pictures. Spinels are generally hardy stones and rare scratches or chips unless..... There are never any guarantees, even in diamonds. The risk is always there if the girdle is too thin, if there is an inclusion near the edge, if you happen to hit it against a metallic object, if the setter applies too much pressure while setting the stone, etc.

You are most welcome!

Thanks to all the replies, yes I do enjoy looking/wearing this ring:) (probably due to its hardness)
