Calling all the Pregnant PS''ers

Pandora- what is the piped in gas for? Is it for pain relief? I''ve never heard of this. As for enemas, suppositories, and shaving...no clue. Guess I have a lot to learn! I wonder if those things are normal practice here...I hope not!

China- Awww, your 3D is SO cute! Do you have a name/names chosen and if so, are you telling
27.gif
? Also, putting 2 and 2 together after your comment about the song Evangeline and your screen name, are you a Grateful Dead fan? DH has been for years and is going to see them in Chicago soon.

Mandarine- Glad you are doing well! I hear ya about the energy! The sleepies really just hit me the last few days, but I am off tomorrow and the next day and I have BIG plans for closet cleaning too!

So we just got back from our first ultrasound! I am 12 wks 5 days, but baby is measuring 13 wks 1 day (which she said is just fine). So there is only ONE in there! I was a little concerned because my mom''s dad had 2 sets of twins amongst his 14 brothers and sisters! I think DH was secretly hoping for twins, but we are both just thrilled to have one that (so far) looks healthy. 2 arms, 2 legs, heartbeat was 158 and he/she was moving like CRAZY! The doc even said, "Whew- you''ve got a WIGGLY one in there!!!" She did abdominal and vaginal to try to get good shots of the back of the neck area for the NT test, and it took about 45 minutes to get 4-5 that she was happy with. The baby was spinning around, sucking it''s thumb, "waving" at us...so funny. She also said "baby sure is thirsty today" and showed us how you could see the mouth and little lips opening/closing and sucking in fluid. How cool. I won''t be able to load pics for a few days b/c DH had to take off after the appt for a business trip and I don''t know how to work our scanner
emembarrassed.gif
. Have to pop in to the lab on the way to work for the blood test portion of the test and then we should have preliminary results in a few days.

Hope everyone is feeling well!

Amber, you must be so excited. My first appt is tomorrow morning and I am sure I won''t be able to sleep tonight. I am not even getting an ultrasound at this appt (they don''t do them at the office I am going to). Please check in and let us know how it goes.

Awww how exciting! It''s going to be a great day Amber
35.gif

Amber, good luck today! I wish I could help you to not be nervous, but I understand. When we went for our first doc appt (after the nurse appt at 8 wks) at 9wks 5 days I started crying and told her I didn''t ''feel'' pregnant anymore and didn''t think there was a baby in there anymore
emembarrassed.gif
. I felt crazy, but she assured me that these feelings are normal. She also said she would TRY to find the heartbeat, but that we had to promise not to freak out if we couldn''t b/c it was very early. Anyhoo, we heard it and I felt a gazillion times better. Then today, for our ultrasound, I was actually surprised to see the baby on the screen b/c I still don''t ''feel'' pregnant! Seeing that really made it more real. Also, she massaged my belly to try to get it to move into a better position for the pic, and you could see the baby jostling around in there- that was nuts. I''m excited for you- I''m sure all will go well, and I''ll be thinking about you!

Any chance we woul know the sex that really? (I would be right between 11-12 weeks). Maybe I should try to push the regular u/s (for the cervix lenght) a week out or something?. I guess I could call the Dr and ask. I was thinking maybe if I push it out a bit then they maybe they could tell us if we''re team Pink, Blue or Purple!
There''s not much chance of knowing the sex until 16 weeks +

At 11-12 weeks both male and female genitalia look identical. There''s a forum called ''in-gender'' where you can post u/s photos and they will have a guess for you based on the ''nub theory'' (but you need to have a good clear shot of the nub).

Basically you can see a long white line sticking out. If the line is above 30 degrees from parallel with the spine it indicates a boy, if it''s under the 30 degrees it''s a girl.

Ultrasound pics from under 12 weeks aren''t normally any good as the angle hasn''t started to change. Nearer to 13 weeks it''s clearer, but there is nothing that looks like a little willy at that stage. I think a lot of people see the line and reckon it must be a boy, but both genders have the same thing at this stage.

I posted my u/s pic there as I had a pretty clear nub shot and got mainly boy votes - although the u/s tech who is the resident expert said mine could really go either way, if I''d been a few days further on (I was 12wk 3 days) she would have said definite girl but it could have carried on up and been a boy one!

If a u/s tech did guess for you at an 11-12 weeks scan I certainly wouldn''t paint the nursery yet!

Entonox is a truly wonderful invention...

It's a 50/50 mix of pure oxygen and nitrous oxide. You get a mouthpiece and breathe it in during contractions. The pure oxygen helps keep your muscles oxygenated and is good for the baby and the nitrous oxide relaxes you and takes the edge off the pain/takes you away from the pain. It also encourages you to both breathe deeply and in a controlled manner.

It feels a bit like having had a few glasses of wine and is very relaxing...
1.gif

Because you hold the mouthpiece you can't OD on the stuff and they have a limitless supply (it's piped through the walls like oxygen is). It also leaves your system very quickly.

The biggest problem generally is getting it off your husband - they all seem to be very keen on having a go!

It's available for all births in the UK (and most of Europe) - if you have a home birth, the midwives will bring tanks of it with them and you can have it during water births as well.

All the rooms in my unit have en-suite bathrooms with baths so you can labour there at the beginning if you wish - hence the stuff is piped through there as well so you can still use it.

I don't know anyone who hasn't had Entonox (also known as gas & air) for labour and most people love the stuff.
9.gif

I have no idea why you don't have it in the USA - possibly because it's incredibly cheap and so not very billable to insurance companies?

Pandora
33 weeks today...

Good luck Amber!

Thinking of you today
2.gif

Congrats Natalina on seeing your lickle wiggleworm!
Nov - Good luck tomorrow!! So many exciting appts lately!
Mandy - I wouldn't move your appt. Just enjoy being 11/12 weeks and look forward to ONLY 4-6 weeks wait until you get another glimpse at your little wonders. I agree having short-term goals to look forward to make the waiting more bearable.

We'd better get some u/s pics ladies!
11.gif

Pandora - great update on your classes. Funny about the differences between the US and UK. I feel like you're getting so close, which means I am too, which is NUTSO! haha. NGL (not gonna lie) that gas sounds pretty good. Is there any side effects? Like, I remember getting all weepy and losing control of my emotions when I got some gas for dental work. I didn't love that feeling - I wasn't in control of my feelings.
39.gif

Linds - love your diaper bag. it's sexy
27.gif
! Are their any exterior pockets? I'm realizing that I love outside pockets. I've been looking at all my favorite handbags, and collecting a list of features on each one that I love and want in a diaper bag.

Ebree - I originally wanted a Coach bag, but couldn't justify the price. Sadly, we don't have an outlet here...

Thanks guys! I thought it would be too early, so I might as well leave it as is. This u/s was scheduled for the cervix length and they wanted me to come around that time, so I can''t really push it out until week 16. I guess I will have to be patient and wait
5.gif

So I will basically have 2 ultrasounds in like 4 days...lol...Oh well, I''m not complaining, just hoping they don''t make me wait too long for the next one

Don''t, it''s all starting to feel a bit too real - mind you so is the weight and power of this kid!

There are side-effects in that it can make you feel very euphoric, a bit like you''re going to pass out and makes some people feel very sick. I think it''s similar to what some dentists use - you do feel a bit out of it for definite (I used to sneak a bit when I was sitting in hospitals waiting for my father to finish work as a teenager - it''s the bit of giving birth I''m actually looking forward to
9.gif
)

If you look up the data sheets, it''s like all meds - comes with a list of a gazillion side-effects just in case. It''s been used here for 40 years and over 60% of women use it during labour, so I guess they''d have discovered by now if it wasn''t safe.

You tend to need a lot less other stuff with it, so they can keep the epidurals down low and give less pethidine etc. I''m pretty sure they use it a lot in Canada. The USA is the only country they don''t normally have it.

One of the reasons you have to hold it and you can''t have a mask is that if you start to get drowsy and about to pass out you can''t hold the mouth-piece so you can''t OD on it.

I know that our prenatal classes (given at the hospital, not thru my middie) go over pain options. I''ll see if they mention it!

I was a deadbeat and didn''t sign up for prenatal classes on time. WHOOPS! We don''t start the 6 weeks of classes until April 15th. Baby is due May 22nd. haha. Talk about cutting it close! The last class in two days before the due date!

I love all the diaper bags posted.

I may look for one today. I am forcing myself to go shopping tonight. I''ve been feeling kind of down knowing how far I have to go and how much bigger I''m going to get. I think some new clothes in my wardrobe that are a little more fit and make me look more pregnant will help out.

Will laughing too hard put me into early labor?? We just moved into a new office and got a new phone system. I can listen to my voicemails through my email and speed up/slow down the voicemail. It is the funniest thing I''ve ever heard.

Have any of you had an asymptomatic UTI in early pregnancy? Did you get it treated? We just got back my big panel of early blood/urine testing, and everything looks great except that my white blood count is elevated and I have some bacteria in my urine. DH thinks this means I have a UTI. We''re waiting for the midwife to call us back (the only bad thing about getting access to my tests at the same time she does!).

China, you little boy is adorable!!

Amber, please let us know how your appt goes! Good luck!
9.gif

Mandarine, are you seeing a perinatalogist because it''s twins? Most people I know have only seen a high-risk ob when they''re carrying triplets or more, but extra care can only be a good thing, right?
1.gif
Hope your appt goes well!

I haven't but please let me stress that it is SO SO important to get it treated ASAP if it is one. I don't mean to scare you but infections like that can lead to losing the baby or other problems if left untreated. So please have it checked ASAP.

ETA: I should add that if treated you'll be totally fine. So don't freak-it's very normal in preggos.

REAL quick drive by (crabby baby kicking me right now!)

Re: diaper bags. CHECK OUT EBAY!!!
I just bought a brand new Kate Spade Abigail (Zermatt) diaper bag for a grand total of $128! The girl was asking for $170, I did a "best offer" for $150 and then had a 15% off coupon! They have a lot of CUTE bags on there (of all brands) so definitely look before you pay retail price!

BLEN: can't wait to meet your little one! hang in there...you're SO close! My OB told me she thought i would have at least a few weeks to go, and my water broke on the way out of her parking lot
9.gif
!

You guys ALL look adorable...LOVE the belly pic fridays.

(also, was at Gymboree yesterday and that whale stuff is SOOOOOO cute!).

ETA: Peony, having an elevated WBC in pregnancy can be completely normal. Mine was very high almost every time I was checked. The bacteria could be normal or not, depending if it was a "clean catch." They might have you repeat the urine sample, and they should definitely send it for culture!! But I agree with Neat...if it is a true UTI, it's important to get treated.

ETA (take 2): Mela...get some topical steroids!! They are completely safe in pregnancy and are the best treatment for PUPPP. If they don't control it, you can even take oral steroids. Talk to your OB, and if she/he isn't keen on treating, go see a dermatologist!

Yes - they did the stick test at my appointment, it came up positive for nitrites, so the midwives gave me an Rx for antibiotics then and there. I had to phone in a few days later when the labwork was done to check I was on the right antibiotics (they put me on Cefalexin).

Other than the tablets smelling and tasting so disgusting I had real problems getting and keeping them down with the m/s, it was clear at the next appointment and I haven''t had one since. I did get given the 7 day course not the 3 day course because I was pregnant.

They were a bit suprised I had no symptoms, but maybe it just got caught very early. But then, I''ve never had one in my life before, so maybe I wouldn''t recognise the symptoms.

It can cause major problems in pregnancy, so it''s a good idea to get it treated asap.

Peony - hope it''s not an infection, but if it is, at least you''re catching it early.

Fiery - what''ja buy? what''ja buy?

Amber? Update please!

Shopping PSA.

I just got my lastest ETSY purchase. Baby leggings from "Crawler Covers & More"

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=23052070

I''m REALLY happy with them. Not only are they adorable, but 4 pairs for $22 is a really really good deal (IMO). I plan on giving my BFF 2 pairs, so for $22 I not only got my own baby "himher" 2 pairs, but I squeezed a gift out of them as well! Score big time!

I''ll try to take a pic later. show and tell. hehe.

Hi all! Super quick drive by (we''re eating). EDD is 11.22, measuring 5w6d, 3 days earlier than what we had going by LMP. The doc isn''t worried. We saw the flicker of the heartbeat and made another appointment for 4.21 for another ultrasound since it''s so small. I almost passed out from the blood draw! Be back later!

Amber, yay
36.gif
sounds like a good appt. I''m glad all is well. Hooray for the heartbeat!! Everyone''s EDDs are changing. I wonder if mine is going to change.

LIA - thanks for your input. If I remember correctly, you''re a Derm? I will look into Rx Creams if my natural solutions are not working. I tend to try natural remedy'' first, then bring out the big guns

As "promised", here is a pic of my Etsy "crawler" leg warmers for infants. Mela is NOT happy about this. she''s squinting from the flash but let me tell you - she did NOT like the pair she was wearing. lol.

Mela, I love the puppy abuse! And you just have the roughest luck with the bargain shopping. I''ve been trying to take your suggestion of visualization and I''ve been trying to visualize my cervix opening through contractions. Maybe it''ll help!

Amber, glad to hear your appointment went well.

LIA - that''s hilarious. Did you turn right around and go back in?

Peony- I also hope that it''s not an infection.

Pandora - it''s so weird how many differences there are between there and here. I don''t think enemas/shaving/etc are common now, but they were when we were born so it''s possible that her mom was talking to her about them.

Mandarine - It sounds like you might have the lovely first tri bloat too. Good luck finding a prenatal class. If you want something online to tide you over, I''ve been liking these yoga videos.

Courtney- well, laughing can give me contractions, but they go away on their own. If they caused early labor then I''d think that a lot of people would be in trouble.

I had yet another middie appointment today and I''m feeling tons better. She told me that the ctx can do things that aren''t obvious to me, like help the baby to move further down and into a better position, or help to soften my cervix, and told me not to feel discouraged.

38w5d

A quick DB from me, too!

natalina- Hooray for a great NT scan! I love that by 12-13 weeks, they look like babies.

Mandarine- Our tech guessed "boy" at the NT scan, but she was hesitant. I doubt she would have guessed if I hadn't asked her. By 12 weeks, they can *sometimes* tell (like Pandora said, based on the angle- our little guy was CLEARLY angled up!), but I wouldn't buy blue or pink based on such an early guess.

Amber- Yay for a heartbeat!
36.gif

mela- LOVE those baby legs! How cute that your furbaby is modeling them.

Blen- I'm glad you're feeling better!

So I've been dealing with some serious fatigue and a feeling of 'blah' after my first meal of the day the past few days. I hope it's just a phase, because I'm knocked out by 10:30 am, and I wake up at 7! Re: Diaper bags, I didn't buy the Kate Spade and I'm kind of kicking myself (no more 30 percent code!) but I found one on eBay I have my eye on. We'll see.

I'm sorry if I missed anyone! I hope you're all having a wonderful Tuesday evening.

thanks for the sympathy guys! im somewhat better...but lets see how that goes after all the doc appt"s ..2mor is follow up for the fetal echo, hoping that stupid "spot" went away which would make me feel muuuuch better. thurs is nst, ob and endo (checking on my adrenal gland issue).

fisher/mela...cant fold laundry bc every since ive been on bedrest dh has been giving it in and they fold it quite nice there
1.gif
....but...
i can finally say that my mom/sis have purchased some baby items like D&G onesies and towels and all the ed hardy onsies and diaper bag (looove ed hardy) and dh wheeled me around at BRU where we ordered the glider, car seats, bassinetts and snap n go. but i still cant prepare the house (its kind of a mess) i have to move dh''s stuff into my closet (which im not happy about but has to be done so babies can have their own big closet in the nursery).

i also read on another site that one lady gave birth to her twins at 33wks and they were almost 5lbs each and still have to stay in the nicu til may! and they have wires and stuff..so that got me somewhat discouraged bc i want littlle to no nicu stay and wires...so trying to keep it going til 38 wks
4.gif

mela- that puppy with the warmers is a pissa! the cutest thing ..made me smile
9.gif

im glad everyone is having good news and good u/s''s!!!

Finally I''m up! After grabbing a cream puff at Beard Papas (best cream puffs ever), DH and I hauled my prenatal gift bag home, and curled up in bed and slept for two hours. I must have been tired!

Anyway, I''ll post the pic of the ultrasound tomorrow, I''m just exhausted right now.

Rundown of the appointment (sorry if it''s super boring!):

After I signed in and handed over the forms I filled out last night, DH and I got comfortable. It was like a scene from "Knocked Up", only we weren''t terrified of the babies! We were surrounded by babies and pregnant women, ranging from a 7 month old flirty little boy to a newborn baby, his mommy in for her first post-birth visit. It was funny watching DH''s reaction to the tiny little newborn, since the last newborn he''d seen was 8 years ago! I had just gone to the bathroom before Paul picked me up to our appointment, so I had to chug some water for the urine test. Finally, we got called back, where we were called into our doctor''s office. We went over the usual questions about our risk factors, what to do as well as what NOT to do, and she answered any questions we had. Thankfully she told me my Advair asthma inhaler is just fine in pregnancy, which was a (no pun intended) breath of relief, as I''d been cutting back on my usage worried it could be bad.

After we interviewed, I did the urine sample and had my weight taken (yowza), and went into the room where DH was already waiting in the "daddy closet"- a little cubby off the site of the room with a curtain and a chair and magazines. The nurse took my blood pressure and told me to get undressed and onto the table. Once that as done, the doc came in and we did the full exam; pap, cervical exam, a bunch of various swabs, breast exam, palpation of my abdomen, check of the lymph nodes and things. The said I had a "nice early pregnant uterus", which is nice to hear! Then she sent me to get my blood drawn down the hall. At first I was fine, the needle stung a bit and I refused to look at the blood that kept being taken, vial after vial. On the last vial, she took out the needle and pressed the cotton ball to the spot, and I started passing out. It got dark, I couldn''t hear, and I got super cold. I could hear the tech ask if I was okay, and to stay with her, as she called for apple juice and granola bar "STAT!". I put my head down and got verrrrry close to passing out. They passed smelling salts under my nose and gave me the juice that I chugged. They wheeled in a wheelchair and took me to lie down in a room. It sucked.

Finally I went to get my transvag ultrasound, she scanned my ovaries (looking good) and we saw the baby with its yolk sac and heart beating away at 108bpm. As I said before, my doctor wants to hear the baby''s heartbeat, and check it out once it gets a little bigger, which will be in three weeks. This appointment had me measuring at 5w6d, rather than the 6w2d going off the LMP, which makes sense, as I ovulated a little later, and had a cycle of about 29 days or so. I asked if there was anything to worry about, and she said not to worry at all, but because he''s so tiny right now, she wants to see when he''s a little bigger and things are easier to see. I''m not complaining about another ultrasound! On the way out I was given a goodie bag with about 7 prenatal samples, a copy of What to Expect, various pamphlets, a Bad and Good things for you letter, and all sorts of random things.

All in all, fun times minus the blood draw!

Amber I just cannot express how happy I am for you! Seriously, you have been dreaming of this moment and now it is here! You are pregnant! There is a little tiny baby inside you!
9.gif

Amber, I missed your announcement somewhere but wanted to congratulate you and wish you a very easy pregnancy. I am so very happy for you!!

congrats amber!! sorry about the passing out...what a pain!

blen: haha...i totally SHOULD have turned around and gone back in but i was on the phone with dh (telling him how my ob thought it would be a while), and i thought i had just peed my pants! i got home and realized it was BLOOD (not typical "water") and had to go right to the hospital. it was a disaster...i posted the whole story a while ago... hang in there!!!!

mela: yup, i''m a dermie. and i totally used topical steroids throughout my pregnancy (for my eczema), and coby seems just fine (although i guess i''m slightly biased!).
20.gif
your picture of your puppy is sooo adorable!

ebree: keep watching on ebay. things are added ALL the time. i would search "kate spade diaper bag" a couple times a day and i just waited for the right one... also (you probably already know this, but i was ebay-retarded and just figured it out), make sure you search for completed listings similar to what you want to get so you can see what things have actually sold for...

have fun guys! i''m hoping to join you again sometime in the fall...
21.gif

AMBER!! I am so happy for you girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was fun reading your story.

Thanks everyone so much for your feedback!!!!!!!!!!! The good news on my end is that I most likely do not have a UTI. The midwife said that it''s common to have a slightly elevated WBC count in pregnancy, and since my urine wasn''t midstream there could have been some contamination from the vagina. Very possible, as I hadn''t drunk much water before and was really straining to pee. Also, it urine culture didn''t grow anything. So I''m in the clear, yay! Also, my progesterone is off the charts high for someone not supplementing, it''s kind of nuts! It''s just under 100 now. So that''s reassuring!
1.gif

Thank you for the great well-wishes everyone! It''s still so insane, trying to sift through my prenatal vite samples, trying to decide which to try first- hint: NOT the stool softener!

Hi everyone! I must say I am quite surprised to be posting here! I expected to spend some time on the TTC board, but bypassed that completely. I had a feeling something was up, took a HPT Sunday (and several more since then!) and am completely shocked to be pregnant! The crazy thing is that we only tried once ~ we were not really expecting to conceive with the first horse out of the gate, so to speak! Of course we are thrilled despite the shock.

I am kind of freaking out, because I only started on the prenatals yesterday. We were not really planning on TTC until the summer, so I had not started the vitamins yet. I am 33 and had been on the pill for over ten years, so I was just expecting everything to take longer. I''m concerned about not having enough folic acid built up in my system. I try to eat a pretty balanced diet, so hopefully it''s okay, just something to stress about.

It''s still so early, and I have yet to make a doctor''s appt. Need to do that tomorrow. I have enjoyed reading about everyone''s progress with their pregnancy ~ of course I have only read the most recent posts because there are so many! So excited for you all!
