Calling all the Pregnant PS''ers

RPS, that poor woman.

Pictures, I''ll try to remember to take a clothed picture tomorrow; there isn''t much to see according to everyone who has commented I still don''t look pregnant. I think that has something to do with the baggy sweatshirts I wear. It puts me in the exact opposite camp of most of you, I avoid form fitting clothes, I feel less comfortable in them.

Christmas shopping, online. Happy Saturday!

I''ve been on a roll since Friday... Nursery is squared away, hospital bags are packed and next to the door, my Christmas presents are made and wrapped. I hope everyone will love them. I guess all I can do now is wait... I''m starting to think s/he better come out soon, even my maternity clothes are getting tight!

Great BPF pics everyone! Beautiful bellies.
5.gif
I can''t believe the comments some of you are getting. People can be so rude. I''ve been asked a few times if I wasn''t really sure I wasn''t having twins... Like we wouldn''t have found out by now.

PSA: Halo sleepsacks on babysteals again!

gooooo anchor...!! you are totally ready hehe. i am kind of jealous that you are due 4 weeks earlier than me... i am kind of ready for him to come out BUT on the other hand i am getting a little freaked out that he will be here sooner than i expect!!

rps...that OB sounds great..!! it's good to know you have a backup just in case. so sad about the woman with the GB. it really does make you count blessings.

our halo sleep sacks came from BRU... these sleep sack things are so funny looking. but effective i guess. they are just so long! the ones on babysteals are sold out again, those things must go in MINUTES!

and we got the aden and adais sage wraps from the BRU clearance, oooh i LOVE the sage. i got 2 packs for friends too and my mom was trying to tell me i should keep one for myself. i already have EIGHT, how many does she think i really need??? i also have a bunch of other blankets too.

seriously this clothes and 'baby stuff' thing is outta control....i took a photo of our clothes pile in the closet, i'll try to post it later, but i think this kid has enough textiles to last him til age 3. i might return a few things and get bigger sizes too since a lot of people gave me newborn and 0-3 months stuff--i think i might have too much. i am also going to need to organize all the clothes by size so i can assess what we have and what might need to go back.

i spent an hour right now in the nursery just organizing some more and putting things away. i have to do this every week it seems since we have gotten so much STUFF. where do you put it all???? at this point i just have to buy a few more 'necessities' like wipes and diapers and waterproof cloths. but we are 99% all set!! crazy.

oh we had our bf class on friday. it was really interesting...the gal was very knowledgeable and answered all the questions, even my weird ones like how much colustrum does your body make and even if you leak it out your boobs 1-2 weeks before does your body continue to make more etc haha. the answer to that is that your body will keep making colustrum until you deliver the placenta which is the trigger to your body to start making real milk i guess. interesting!

she was also a bit 'extremist' on bf'ing...and especially EBF. i don't really heartily subscribe to everything she was saying, but it was interesting to hear it all anyway. she recommended that you EBF with no bottle interruption for the first 4 weeks, that includes no pacifiers...to minimize boob/bottle confusion. i know lots of moms who have done pacis and bottle and BF interchangeably with no issues but i do see her point too. also we saw a great video that showed latching and what was a great latch, a bad latch etc. we practiced holding the babies/dolls in the different ways, cradle, football, etc and she would come by and correct us. my hospital has a great newborn club too so she talked about that. overall it was a great class even if it went over by 30 min and my back and lower extremities were hurting from sitting for so long (2.5 hours) at the end of an already long day. i am so happy we went.

she also recommended keeping the baby with you in the room after birth whereas i was thinking of sending him to bigger hospital nursery so i could sleep. we had a little discussion about that later at home.
3.gif

funny but attending the class also seemed to 'jump start' greg's drive to know as much as possible about the birthing process and the months immediately following. he was sad that i had done the birth plan without his input (even though i showed it to him originally and he was like 'mmm k') so i dug out my copy and show him what i wrote down. now he is reading 'what to expect the first year'... which i am totally happy about since i have only made it like 1/3way through so far hehe.

anyway, sorry this is so long..!! hope everyone is doing well and plugging along just fine. i keep meaning to just do an iphone bump photo but forgetting, maybe after my shower today. happy sunday all.

QT~Thanks! I can''t believe you have been asked if you''re having twins. That''s ridiculous. You''re so little.

MokeyPie~Isn''t that just the best....is she or is she not preggo? I felt like I should wear a t-shirt or something that said, "yep, I''m knocked up."

Anchor and Mara~yay for being ready!! We still have quite a few things left to do...it''s starting to stress me out a bit. Thank goodness the dresser and the prints for his room will be here this weekend and then all I have left is picking up some diapers.

Had my appt on Friday and yuck. TMI ahead....I have a yeast infection and varicose veins "down there" that my OB told me may or may not go away once I have the kid. Awesome.
20.gif
Add to that I gained more weight than I wanted and am measuring ahead (therefore making me FEEL huge). I left thinking this will very likely be my last pregnancy!
40.gif
Okay, done whining. Baby is healthy and doc was happy with everything so that''s all that matters. Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Burk, don''t freak out yet about the varicose veins. I think they''re pretty common, and most go away after pregnancy because that weight is no longer on them. I''m glad that the baby is doing well!

Mara, the bf class sounds like it was pretty good. I know the teacher sounded extreme when she said no other nipples for the first 4 weeks to avoid nipple confusion, but this is just a standard suggestion. I think it''s to try to keep issues to a minimum for MOST people, but the reality I''ve found is that around 3 weeks is when I like to introduce a bottle (since I''ll be going back to work) and a pacifier. By then, with my own kids, I can tell if bf is going well or not. If someone else is still having latch issues at 3 weeks, I wouldn''t suggest adding a bottle in there because I''d rather fix the latch problem first and then deal with adding bottles.

On the other end of the spectrum is waiting too long. With my 4th, I didn''t try giving her a pacifier until she was 5 or 6 weeks and she absolutely refused it. It was hard because she was a really high needs baby that insisted on being held for the first 4 months of her life. She also never took a bottle, even when I was out of the house for 6 hours and Dad was the only one there. So, yeah, it''s a hard thing to determine -- when is too early and when is too late?

The biggest piece of advice I can give you IRT bf is don''t think you''re starving your baby if your milk takes a few days to come in. A newborn''s stomach is the size of a marble, so they don''t need much (plus they''re born with fat stores for this very reason). Colostrum is important because a newborn''s gut is very porous, so the colostrum helps seals the holes which makes it less likely that your baby will have allergies.

With a first baby, your milk may take 4-5 days to come in, so the best thing you can do is to nurse on demand. Every time the baby shows signs of wanting to nurse (mouthing, chewing on his hands, etc.), stick him on there. Yes, you end up nursing pretty much around the clock in the early days, but it does get better! I promise!

As for the rooming in, you might find that once the baby is here, you don''t want him going anywhere! Plus, you''re probably not going to get much sleep in the hospital because the nurses will be in and out all night checking your vitals or bringing the baby to you to nurse. I could never wait to get home to my own bed where I could tuck the baby in with me and actually REST.

We had a decent but busy weekend, so now that Monday is here and I have to work, I''m utterly exhausted. Nesting stinks. Saturday, I was determined to get stuff done. I really needed to rearrange some stuff in our bedroom that has accumlated over time because I need to figure out where we''re going to put the birth tub. I got most of that done. I also was griping at the kids to get their rooms cleaned up because I simply don''t have the energy to do it and they were getting tired of listening to me yell at them.
8.gif
I felt bad, but I can''t help this feeling that I need to have it all done!

Then yesterday, we went to SO''s family''s Christmas party, which was lovely as usual, but it meant that I had no nap. Afterwards, we stopped by his parents'' since we didn''t get to talk to them much at the party and by the time we got home, I was about to fall asleep standing up.

I took our toddler to bed with me at 9:30.

This is my last week of work for 2009. If we don''t use our vacation, we lose it, and it''s a quiet time of the year (mostly), so with the combination of 8 days of vacation and the holidays, I am free until January 4. Unfortunately, I am WAY behind on my Christmas shopping -- somehow the time has gotten away from us -- so I''m going to see how much I can order online this week.

And I have to take our toddler to the dentist at 8:40 this morning. I don''t know what in the world I was thinking when I made that appointment! I''m not a morning person and Monday mornings are horrible, even when I''m NOT pregnant!!

I have a document to write later so I think I''ll do the first pass when I get back from the dentist, then take a nap, then be fresh to do the second pass. It''s foggy and cold here today so I''d rather spend the day in bed snoozing, but it''s not going to happen. Next week it will! Yay!

Burk, sorry about the infection and veins. Frustrating and uncomfortable!

I made my tamale filling over the weekend, cleaned out the pantry and got all my shopping done online, otherwise we just laid low as I''m still not feeling great and neither is John.

One of my girlfriends found out she''s pregnant with her second kiddo yesterday, bad timing as there is a potential job change in her future that she just found out about; she wouldh''t have been trying if she''d known. Another friend is scheduled for induction on Saturday. Babies everywhere!

all of of the BFPs look amazing! I can only hope . . .

I''ve posted a bit over here, but have mostly been laying low for the past three months. however, we just had our nt scan and since things have started looking less like a gummi bear and more like a baby, I''m feeling more comfortable joining this thread. tomorrow, I''ll be thirteen weeks and ever so delighted to be there, though I''ll be even more delighted to arrive at 14 weeks. here''s a pic of the babe

TGIF!!

ChargerGrrl, oddly enough, I haven''t seen The Business of Being Born. I don''t know why -- I guess probably because I was in the homebirth camp before it came out?

Steph, I feel you on the snoring. In all my prior pregnancies, I would SNORT. I think I would stop breathing and then draw in a deep breath, which is how I snorted. It was hilarious because I would wake myself up. This time, I tend to sigh just as I''m dropping off and it rewakes me just a little bit. Weird.

Puppmom, I hate to say it but the bloating and constipation just seems to be a part of early pregnancy. I looked 4 months pregnant very early on when I knew I could not be showing. I drank a lot of water and ate stuff with fiber, like Raisin Bran. Now at the end, I''m feeling the same way so the other night I got some Activia with Fiber and it was tasty and *effective.*

All the bellies look cute!! No pic for me today, but I look exactly the same.

I had my 33 week checkup with my mw today. Everything is perfect so no worries. Baby is measuring right on for 33 weeks, and he''s head down. We were playing around with him to make sure it was his head we were feeling and she had me holding his head in my fingers while she felt around his back and butt. It was really cool, but really odd that this was my son''s HEAD that I was feeling.

We filled out the birth certificate paperwork today, and decided that I would use one of her horse trough birth tubs instead of the inflatable. I''m glad those things have been taken care of. I can''t believe that in 4 weeks, I''m cleared for homebirth!!

One thing that was scary -- the young woman that was in before me came out with her friend and a walker. My MW made some comment about being extra careful on the steps.

The woman is a schoolteacher, pregnant with her first child, and got Guillain-Barre after receiving her standard flu shot in September. A person is much more likely to develop this during the flu, but it can happen after the shot too -- but it''s still VERY RARE. I don''t want to freak anyone out about it. Anyway, it took 3 weeks to diagnose this woman and she ended up in ICU for a while. She''s been improving, but is now addicted to painkillers (and still in massive pain so she can''t do without), so her baby will have to go through detox when it''s born. The baby has a 90% chance of being FINE, but this poor woman is so beat down. I feel so awful for her because this should be an amazing time in her life and through bad luck, it''s all changed.

My mw also told me about a twin birth that she assisted with the other day. The mom was upset because she started having some bleeding at 35 weeks due to a partial abruption, so the mw and her OB backup decided a c-section had to be done. The mom understood this was for the health of her babies, but she hated the idea of everyone else getting to see and touch her babies before her.

As the OB pulled the babies out, he didn''t hand them to the nurses that were waiting -- he passed each one under the screen to snuggle next to the mom for a few moments. I thought this was so wonderful and probably went a long way to making the mom feel better about having a c-section!

The same OB took the woman with Guillain Barre to HIS house so that she could be a part of the get together with his grandkids. Her husband has H1N1 so she can''t be around him right now, which is really hard for her. The OB also had her stay at his house for a few days and he and his wife doted on her.

Like I said before, I would not hesitate to use this OB if I had to switch.

RPS, your posts are really interesting as so much of what you write about as if it was uncommon is entirely par for the course over here.

For example, even though I was high-risk I only saw the OB 3 times during my pregnancy. All my appointments were with the midwives. There''s always an OB on the same floor as the midwives, so if they''re unsure about something then they''ll pop out and ask the OB''s opinion.

Whilst I''m very committed to baby wearing, family bed, and attachment parenting, I''m also extremely orthodox when it comes to medicine. Before I got pregnant I was very unsure about having midwife care, but they were brilliant - you could ask really stupid questions, the appointments were much longer and as I saw a team of 7 throughout the pregnancy I knew both the girls who were with me during the labour and the ones who came to see me at home every day after I got out of hospital. When things started to go wrong, the midwife was down the corridor to get the OB within seconds.
In the UK we don''t have nurseries - the baby is with you 24/7 unless they are in the NICU, even when I was in the ICU Daisy was with me... breastfeeding whilst hooked up to a load of monitors, drips and BP monitors was interesting!

Also if you have a c-section and are not under GA, the baby is passed straight to you. With vaginal births, the baby is put straight onto your stomach, with c-sections they wrap it in a towel first as they''ll get cold without skin to skin. Again you room in after a c-section unless the baby is in NICU.

Birth here, even in the high-risk areas of L&D units, is treated as naturally as possible and with minimum intervention. From when you get the BFP to when you go into labour there are NO internals other than TV-scans as it only increases risk of infection. During the birth I only had 3 internals and each time my permission was sought. All the rooms are made as unmedical to look at as possible and have low-lighting (the gear is all there if needed - one flick of a switch and the whole place is super high-tech!). Each room has a private bathroom with pumped Entonox available in the bath!

Everything is geared towards making the process as nice and as pleasant as possible, and making sure that the mother feels in charge and that her choices are being respected while keeping mother & baby safe - my unit had two pools available for water births and we even had a indoor garden with fountains that overlooked the Thames and the Houses of Parliament where you could go in the early stages if you wanted to walk about!

Just wanted to add - with the lady you saw who had the Guillaine-Barre, I take a lot of painkillers due to spinal injuries and so Daisy was born opiate dependent. She had Apgars of 10 and 10 at birth, had a bit of withdrawal on Day 3 which was treated with a bit of oral morphine for one day. She was monitored every 2 hours for a week in hospital and other than the very odd high-pitched cry didn''t have other problems and she''s well ahead on all her milestones. Chances are that the baby will be absolutely fine. I got pregnant knowing that coming off my meds was not an option and with the full sport of several OBs, Neonatologists and Pain Consultants.

requesting morning sickness experience

out of interest... for those of you who have experience with ms. sorry to make you go back to those dark days.

did it start off light and get worse?

or did it just hit really bad out of the blue one day and stay on?

mine is very managable right now so I can''t complain, but I''m only 7.5 weeks (and I read the worst hits around 9 weeks, though different for every woman). anyway, just want to know what I can expect and if I can keep my fingers crossed for smooth sailing.

My experience is not very encouraging, unfortunately. I had nausea (including a few "almost throwing up" moments) from week 7 to week 23, and would actually throw up 2-3 times/week from week 8 to week 21. Not fun.
14.gif
I hope it doesn''t last so long for you.

Morning preggies
hope everyone is doing well. I am finally through the first tri (about 15 weeks along now) so the nausea has subsided in time for the holidays--yay! i am looking thick waisted and in that awk stage, but this time around it bothers me much less. I was much more self concious the first time around.
Hope everyone else is feeling well. Pregnancy over Christmas is great b/c we can eat a little extra
31.gif
. Only sucky thing is that we miss out on all the tasty drinks. Cran and tonic it is !

Re: rooming in. Forget who mentioned it, but I would wait till the baby arrives before making that decision. We didn''t have the option of sending the baby to a nursery so my plan was to let DH (who rooms in at our hospital) take DS for most of the night. Didn''t really work out b/c i felt i had to be close to him. After 9 mos in the womb it felt wrong to seperate him from me in his first 24 hours. I could not have sent him to another room altogether, but that''s just me. However, i was exhausted and it would have been very beneficial
5.gif
So basically, i think it comes down to how you are feeling about everything after the birth --it''s a play it by ear kind of thing.

Love all the bump pics, but not the bump comments. Wow, it doesn''t matter how many times i hear stories about what others think is okay to say to a pregnant women, i am still floored. Everyone looks great, so pay no attention ladies!!

noelrw --my MS hit the hardest from weeks 6-10. It was pretty sudden and the worst was around weeks 7-9.
It subsided around week 12 and is mostly gone now at week 15.
I think yours could get worse (and ya, it can just hit without warning) but also may not. I had the same, consistent low-grade ickiness for a few hours a day until my 4th month with my first pregnancy. Very different from this one, so you never can tell. Fingers crossed for you!!!

SILVER CROSS FIZZ is on sale for $69.96 on Shnoop.com. Not sure if it's a great deal, but it supposed to be retailed $150. It's an umbrella stroller.

Uppa Baby Vista is $549.99 on btrendie.com. It's $50 less than albeebaby.

Mine was mild up until week 7-8, and then it got BAD. I was gagging randomly and at smells literally all day long, the only time I had any relief was when I was asleep. I only threw up a few times, but it didn''t start to calm down until I reached week 20 or so.

rockpaperscissors~Thanks for the reassurance. I didn''t have them at all with my first pregnancy and they are horrible now so I was a little freaked out. My doc says the working out I was doing (jumping, running) wasn''t helping my cause and baby being so low is contributing as well. Hopefully they do go away. If they don''t, it''s not the end of the world.
16.gif
Hope you have time for a nap!

Kimberly~Thanks. I know I''m being a baby about it and I''ll forget it even happened once he''s in my arms. Sounds like a productive weekend you had!

lovelylulu~Great pic!! Congrats again!!

noelwr~my m/s started off light around 7 weeks and got progressively worse. With this pregnancy it was gone by week 13, though. Hoping you continue to be m/s managable!!

Jas12~Oh my goodness....how did you reach 15 weeks already?!!?!? Time flies. Glad your nausea is better.

Lulu - great pic of your little one.

Noelwr - maybe you will be lucky and like me. My morning sickness was also very manageable, I kept waiting for it to get worse and it never did. It finally went away around 14 weeks. I know that is not the case for a lot of people, so I was certainly thankful it was the case. Fingers crossed for you it doesn't get worse.

About the UppaBaby if anyone is interested in the stroller, it is also on sale at Countrymoosekids. It is $579 there, but you can also add an additional 10% off with the code Mother, and they also have free shipping (to Canada as well!)

So, is anyone else incredibly stuffy? It started for me ages ago in first trimester, but now with the heating on it's sooo bad and really annoying. I bought a humidifier for the bedroom, and it helps a bit but it's still not great. Any tips, or do I just have to put up with it?

my nose was super stuffy through my entire third tri. once the baby was here--the stuffy nose went away.

re: stuffy nose - mine has been runny since i''ve been pregnant. i constantly blow my nose and it''s annoying. now that it''s cold, i get more stuffy too. like this weekend, we went to the inlaws and their house was rather warm. omgoodness i couldn''t breathe!

Yes! I''ve been stuffy since about mid-pregnancy... I was wondering if I was the only one too. No tips, unfortunately. DH is very brave putting up with the snoring.
24.gif

My nose was stuffy too and continued through nursing. I mostly formula feed now so it isn''t runny at all.

I''ve been super congested since I got pregnant, too. It''s the worst when I first get up in the morning, unless I shower before I do anything else. Otherwise I get horrible drainage that clogs up my throat. Yuck
14.gif

So in my big news - the baby kicked hard enough this weekend to be seen from the outside (above my belly button, holy cow, he''s moving up fast!) and for my husband to feel him! He was soooo excited, and little Micah was having a fit in there so we got to watch and feel him for awhile. It was so cool, I''m so glad my husband gets to involved in the kicking now.

thanks for the welcome (again)

it''s funny that people think girl, because when we saw it we both thought boy. only time will tell and we have no preference (my mom on the other hand) . . .

noelwr, as for morning sickness - I feel like I got off pretty easy. I was very nauseated from about week 6 through week 11. but no real vomiting and it was pretty manageable as long as i kept eating something to stave it off. around 12 weeks, i started feeling normal again with my wickedly accute sense of smell dulling down ... hope that you have a similar experience.

Hey, girls! Just got back from my ultrasound to check the baby''s weight and my cervix. He was dancing around in there and was sucking his thumb...so cute! Anyway, his estimated weight was 3lbs, 13oz. I think they are supposed to be right around 4lbs now, so pretty close. And my cervix was still short according to the tech, but not any different than it was at 20 weeks. So I feel really good that he''s that big and now I can quit worrying about all the comments. Hope everyone is having a great day!!

Monkey~Yay for DH getting to experience all the fun too!

Steph~So glad the appt went well and baby is on track!

Pandora, thank you for posting about how L&D works where you are! I so wish things were like that as the norm in the US. I have a lot of respect for modern medicine, but I hate how medicalized we''ve made childbirth. I would love to see more moms having birth experiences that empower them because I truly believe that all women are a lot stronger than we sometimes give ourselves credit for.

Noel, ah, morning sickness...such a lovely thing! I didn''t have morning sickness, but rather all day sickness with this pregnancy and the prior 2. Mine hit one day out of the blue and stayed for a while until it gradually went away. I''d have good days and bad days. I made sure to keep something in my stomach at all times, ate whatever I could regardless of the nutritional value and wore Sea Bands. I gained about 15 lb. in the first trimester with each pregnancy in which I had m/s because my goal was to get through until I felt better. The good news is that my weight gain leveled out later and hasn''t been a problem.

Jas, I was the one that mentioned not making a decision about rooming in until the baby''s here because I always felt like you. After so many months of imagining what this little one is like, the last thing I would want is to be separated from him. I''m a total sucker for babies anyway. =)
