We have decided on a papillon as our next "family member"- having done our research, I love how they are small (good for moving) but hardy dogs, much like our yorkie/maltese mix. Can anyone share any information on papillons, how to spot a good breeder, breed specific problems, etc?

WHOO HOOO .... I love my sweet pap Tallulah!!! Best. Dog. Ever.

If you''d ever consider adopting a rescue Pap ... check out this link to the Papillon Club of America. That site also has links to the Papillon Organization of America ... which has a list of reputable breeders by state.

I live in NY but adopted through a breeder in PA (Forevr Paps) ... great stock of puppies there but they are very selective and don''t have many litters. They''ve also gone crazy through the roof in prices since I got Tallulah. And I thought the OLD prices were outrageous! Many prime teensy paps are over 2K these days. Sometimes 3K.

Paps have one pesky medical problem -- kneecaps that slide. It''s hard to avoid because they might not show a tendency toward this as pups (pre-adoption). Tallulah has one that will need surgery eventually & that is pricey. Lots of other small breeds have similar problems & you kinda need to figure in a lot of $$ for future care. Yet, small pups don''t eat that much -- so it probably balances out $$ wise over the life of the dog. Paps live very long lives usually ... 12-18 years??

Oh I have to think of more to tell you -- holler if you have any other specific questions.

YES -- they are hard to house train
NO -- they are not nervous & shaky like Chi''s can be
YES -- they are GORGEOUS
NO -- they don''t shed much (my cats shed TONS more than Tallulah)
YES -- she sleeps with us & rolls us like logs in the night as we turn over HA!
NO -- she''s not a huge barker ... more like a doorbell, she''ll alert when we have visitors
YES - she''s the CUTEST THING EVER!!!!
NO -- they''re not good with kids ... because they''re so fragile. Kids might put them up high, places they can''t jump down from without hurting themselves.

Thanks Deco- I saw your avatar & thought you might respond

. We are definitely looking into rescues, as I have already gone through the housetraining & chewing stages with my dog not too long ago. I do love puppies though; we will take whatever is available once we move. Thank you so much for your advice- it''s very helpful. We will start our search "officially" when we move at the end of May.

I have a POM which has a smidge of Pap in him from a granddad I beleive.... he is waaaaaaayyy cute. But bossy... maybe that is the Pom in him? We live with a mini Poodle, two Peek-a-poos, and him. He is the tiniest at 7 lbs and definetly thinks he is a big ole alpha dog. The others just ignore him. I would say that I would buy 100 more peek-a-poos, I just couldn''t say enough about their temperments.
