The project hasn't gotten off the ground because I can't make a decision as to whether a heated stone is really worth the extra $$$, maybe it is.

Can the experts please chime in here.

Can colored gemstone owners please give your opinions.

Thankyou

I cannot answer your question without knowing a few things:
1. Type of gemstone
2. Budget

Sorry,

Blue Sapphire

I personally think this depends on the gemstone itself that you''re interested in, and the color, and we don''t know your budget, so that is an important aspect as well.

TL is correct. If your budget is healthy and the stone looks a dreamy velvety unheated blue, then that's my choice. If the budget is smaller, I prefer to stretch it by getting the best looking unheated I can get. It all depends on $$$ or $, and the colour of stone itself.

Unheated, but that''s just me.

FYI, Finewater has a blue-violet unheated listed in the members only section for under 1k/ct.

I have seen very few fine sapphires, so I'm not going to counsel you on your decision. The lovely unheated ones look as though they're lit from within.

Unheated stones are generally more expensive, but the only way to go for me.

Ditto too, with an exception: I splurged for unheated for my ER. If it were a random, RH ring, I'd go unheated if I could find one that really sang to me.

If you want a very pretty stone, but you have a smaller budget, I would go with a heated stone. If you have a good budget, I would get an unheated stone, but I would also make sure it had an accompanying lab report indicating the presence of no heat. This will add to the value.

If you''re asking the question then I would suspect that you''re probably straight down the middle and can''t make up your mind. Sooooooo, rather than decide one way or the other, I personally would look for a sapphire that I love within my budget.

I voted unheated if I could get one that I loved. Otherwise I have no problems with getting a heated (low heat, traditional stuff) stone that speaks to me.

But since I buy stuff for my own enjoyment, I will say that I love knowing I have something special instead of just a pretty stone.

Hi Sparkles,
There are a couple of things to think about: 1. Which look do you prefer?; and 2. Do you think of the stone as an investment (not everyone holds this view)? If so, how much does it cost?

Here is a picture of a 2.07 carat unheated I have... You can see the velvety rutile silk, and i LOVE this stone.

I am confused. I thought heated stones were cheaper than unheated ones. Is that the case for only some stones?

Unheated is more expensive. That must have been a typo.

I''d go with the most beautiful stone I could find within my budget and that will meet the size requirement for the kind of setting I wanted. I think 90 something percent of blue sapphires are heated, so I don''t think there is anything wrong with that.

If two stones look identical in color, and one is heated and the other is unheated, and all other things are equal - cutting, clarity, carat weight, gem species - then the unheated one will be more valuable.
