It's a verneuil sapphire. Does anyone have any experience with one? I've never heard of it before.

"The Verneuil process, also called flame fusion, was the first commercially successful method of manufacturing synthetic gemstones, developed in 1902 by the French chemist Auguste Verneuil."

Your photo shows a darkish Royal blue synthetic sapphire which can be found easily either as an Antique in jewellery on places like Rubylane or you should be able to also easily find a modern synthetic sapphire the same colour.

Thanks. This one is a little over 4 carats and is $1,200. Not knowing anything about synthetics, that seemed high to me.

I have a hangup with synthetics but if it were a natural untreated 4 ct sapphire, it will cost nearly $10K, not $1K.

Thanks. I can't buy it right now anyway-- too much in the works at the moment. I also slight synthetics in my mind. I will start looking for sapphire solitares-- I think that is what I am drawn to.
