I want my girls to carry lanterns down the aisle because 1) it'll be dark out and there will be lots of other candles and 2) i can't afford bouquets! my question is, do you think that it will be too clunky to carry? I know they will move a little bit, but i dont' want them bouncing around....you know? has anyone been to a wedding where they did this....how did it look?

I think it sounds like a really cool idea, but I''m having trouble picturing how they will actually be carrying them. Do you have any pics of the lanterns you imagine them carrying?

If you plan to use real candles in them, you''ll have to be sure to get the right kind of lanterns or they''ll burn their hands! It sounds like it could be very pretty, I''ve never personally seen it done though.

I think it sounds lovely with the right laterns... would there be candles inside? Do you have some laterns in mind?

we had a lantern ceremony when i started college. we used little tin lanterns -- ikea has some that are around $5 in a similar style. you do have to be careful not to touch the sides if there is a real candle. for safety you might want to go with flickering LED lights for this.
i think it would be gorgeous having them walk with these, especially in an evening ceremony.

You might be able to find paper lanterns that have battery operated lights in them.... the paper will still give it a soft glow with the right kind of bulb inside, but you don''t have to worry about the heat as you would if you used a candle... but I don''t know what kind of style you''re thinking of using. But I just wanted to add that in before I parted from the board for the day :)

I think that is cool idea.

I have to agree with the others who say to use the led lights to avoid burning. Maybe using something like this instead. It reminds me of the candle dance.

thank you all for your feedback! I was planning on having real candles in them, but i should look into the led ones so that they don't get too hot. It shouldn't be a long ceremony, but better safe than sorry.

I really like the tin ones - I love the design of the white ones from UO, but i don't think the color would go. I'm definitely going to hit up ikea sometime soon though!

I was thinking something along these lines (below) but now i am thinking that I really will need to find something with more of a handle.

or should i go with more of a hurricane candlestick? (NOT this exact one, but more along these lines...)

Have you tried Pottery Barn, Pier I, or Crate and Barrel? I''m not sure if you have a Christmas Tree Shop around you but it''s a great place to go for nearly everything. Prices are really good and there''s a ton of stuff you''ll find that you never knew you needed. I think lanterns would be very romantic and I love the idea.

Thanks zoe! I actually haven''t looked at any of those sites, but I definitely will. I''m not sure if there''s a christmas tree shop around....but i bet that there is one up in frankenmuth (a 365 day christmas town a little ways north of me). If i can''t find anything I think i might just take a trip up there

Sure Mimzy! I should explain though, if you''re not familiar with the Christmas Tree Shop (because if you don''t know it, the name can seem a little random). It''s not a true Christmas shop. It''s sort of like, hmmm...Target maybe, without certain departments. They have everything from furniture, mostly put it together stuff, to candy and other treats, to cards to well, you name it.

thanks zoe - I just googled it and the nearest one is three states away

i wish we had one though! (although we are finally getting a sonic.....so i guess anything is possible)

I think i am also going to hit up cost plus world market. they always have some fun things in there.

You're welcome. We don't have Sonics or Cost Plus World Market here in New England (not that I've heard of anyway). I hope you find the lanterns you're looking for. I think they would look so pretty!

thanks zoe

Hey Mimzy, I''m actually planning to have my bridesmaids carry candles, too, w/ the $5 IKEA tealight lanterns that enbcfsobe mentioned earlier... I tested them w/ tealights for about 1/2 hr and the upper sides do get warm but the bottom (as well as the bottom portion of the sides) stayed totally cool... not even a hint of starting to warm up. So if you are still interested in using real candles I think it''s definitely doable and safe, at least w/ the IKEA lanterns, which I found to be light and easy to carry by holding the bottom w/ both hands. (Besides, the flame is enclosed -- another safety factor.) The absolute hottest part though was the top of the lantern (after all, heat rises); just make sure no one tries to hold the lantern by the top handle!
Oh, but then again I''m planning to have my bridesmaids place the lanterns on a table (where we will have our unity ceremony) after their walk down the aisle... if you''re having your bridesmaids carry the lanterns for a long time they might find lanterns w/ real candles cumbersome to hold (cuz they can''t just relax their arms and let the lanterns hang at their sides due to the top handle being hot) so in that case the LED ones might be the best option after all
