Using a bit of sticky tape I managed to try a few different sizes of center stones with my new rubelite cabs. After putting the cabs as far to the sides as I could wear them, I tried out a 7mm, an 8mm and a 9.5mm stone in the middle. The 9.5mm size is probably pushing it but I think either an 8 or 7mm would work. What do you think?

I wouldn't use any of these particular stones, I was just trying them on for size.

Actually, I am shocked to say this because I thought that the cabs were too be to be sides at all, but I really like the tourmaline. You'd have to do a really thin, simple bezel, I think (JKT? Daniel M?), but I think, in that picture, the proportions look right.

You know what, though, I think the reason I like it is because it looks like a cab in that shot. I kinda think that height might be an issue with three gems that size. Three cabs would help keep the height consistent and low. So, yeah, my vote is for a 9mm cab aqua. posting.php?mode=reply&f=11&t=146493# So I'm a lot of help, right?/user#

My choice for the 9 mm aqua cabochon is only because it appears more proportionate to the side rubellites while the 7mm and 8mm appear to be dwarfed. In order to accommodate such large sizes will probably mean that all 3 stones might have to set high on the finger.

I like the 9.5 mm too.

Hehe, there is no 9mm aqua cab. That's a picture of a 9.5mm blue tourmaline that's upside down. Veloural was saying that a 9mm cab would be better than a 9.5mm faceted stone I believe.

I don't know if I'd go pale blue with the center stone; I was kind of thinking tsavorite cab but maybe that's too christmas-y.

Oops!

Actually, I just emailed Michael the other day with a similar question. I've got a 2.2 carat stone, an oval, and I asked him what size to make the sidestones. He said that my stone would be appx. 8x6, he would guess, and that well cut pears should be 6x4, or if I really wanted a statement they could go as large as 7x5. I wear a size 6, as I like my rings loose, so my finger measures more like a 5.5.
Hope this gives you an idea as to how to total up your finger size, but I don't know how much you would need to subtract if they are smaller than mine. It looks like my three stone should add up to 14, or 16 max. I ended up purchasing a pair of 6x4's yesterday, which were a total of 1.09 carats. Hope this helps.

I like the middle and last, the last the best. Michael linked to a conversion chart a while back when I was unsure how big I could go on the ovals for my 3 stone. You put in your finger size and it tells you how many mm's it is around, and you can figure 1/2 that, since it sits above your finger. I can't link anymore w/PS2 but it's www.onlineconversion.com/ring_size
