Chrysoberyl Pricing Question

In my not-so-successful quest for a yellow stone, I have turned my attention from sapphires to chrysoberyls. I'm looking for something on the larger side, at least 3.5 cts, yellow with little to no green modifier. I would prefer that it not be too light-toned. I am not familiar with chrysoberyl pricing whatsoever and was wondering if anyone here could give me an idea of what I should expect to pay per carat or what is a "fair" price. I have seen super cheap ones on ebay, but they tend to be around 1ct.

I'm also unfamiliar with chrysoberyl treatments.... all of the ones I have seen indicate no treatment, but I'm not sure whether that's standard.

Sorry if these questions are stupid or if they have been answered many times over.

I feel like if you want a fine quality 800-2k maybe? For a large 3k+ depending on the yellow and the cut.

From my understanding its typically unteated.

Jeff Davies tends to have a reliable supply of chrysos. The ones he has listed perhaps have a bit more green than you're looking for, but you can ask him as he has a large inventory that isn't listed online.

Also, I would check with Prima Gems to see what they have that meets your requirements. I saw that they had a nice selection of chrysos at the June show in Hong Kong. Here's the one I got from Prima in June -- 2.5 ct cushion. I can't pick up any green modifier in person and it's very bright. Price on this one was $300/ct retail but I got a trade show discount. I expect larger stones may be more expensive per ct. Prima can probably find a larger chryso for you and their prices are very competitive. :) primachryso_barrytourm.jpg

Wow! You are all so quick! Evergreen, that is an incredibly priced Chryso, but I'd rather have a green modifier than the brown one indicated in the description... Perhaps I should have mentioned that in my first post... whoops.

Marlow, mochiko and Niel, thank you for the great suggestions.

Chrysoberyl pricing is all over the place, and the one gemstone I highly recommend people "shop around" for. I think $400/ct for top quality in a 3 to 4 carat price range is fair, but you can find it cheaper or more expensive per carat.

Top quality color looks a bit like neon yellow highlighter. That color appeals to some, but it's subjective. Some people prefer the more golden yellows which don't sell for as high a premium, or ones that are less "neon" so to speak. If you don't want any green, you will probably look for more golden yellows, which can be brownish yellow. Chrysoberyls, as far as I know, don't really respond to treatment, so they're untreated.

Good luck!

Jeff Davies carries chrysoberyl as well.

Here's one considered that neon highlighter yellow (with a green secondary). It tends to go more yellow in some lighting, and greener in others, but this is probably not what you want.

Niel, thank you. I looked at Pearlman's selection and one is decribed as "lemony yellow" - will inquire about that one.

TL thank you so much for the advice regarding the range of prices and what trade considers the "ideal color". I just returned a highlighter yellow chryso that was stunning in every way except for the bit of green tone that was a little more than I desired. I had a hard time returning it since I liked it by far the most of the yellow stones I have seen, but... :eh:

[It also did not help that I ordered a pink stone at the same time, and pink is my favorite color, despite it being age-inappropriate...]
