Claw Prong vs Tab Prong Pics? WF Knife Edge Pics and Modifications Pretty Please! :)

Good morning everyone! Today is the day I have to finalize the details of my WF order and I still can’t decide on claw or tab prongs. Can anyone share pics of their claw prongs and tab prongs that I can share with my gal at WF for the order? Any WF Knife Edge 6 Prong Setting pics and modifications noted would be very helpful also. I'm contemplating the same thing. From other threads, I've heard that if you prefer the look of classic Tiffany tab prongs, you should go with Vatche U113. If you prefer claw prongs, I believe WF is typically the recommendation!

Modifications I've seen: change alloy to either 90/10 plat/ir or 95/5 plat/ru. Claw prongs. Soften knife edge. Diamond set at medium height.

Your ring is perfect! Apologies for the thread jack but Do you have a wedding band that you’ve paired with it? If not, are you considering any in particular? Cart before the horse but I don’t want to commit to the semi custom modifications until I know that the eternity band diamonds don’t run against the ER prongs. I’ve heard some PSers have had this issue with their WF modified Knife Edge. Would love to hear your experience or thoughts if your wedding band purchase is still in the future.

I just got my ring this month and that was actually the issue I had. It’s actually currently being redesigned right now together at the same time with the eternity band.

It’s being made so the donut under the head is taller to give clearance for the wedding band. And I’m making the knife edge sharper and band slightly thicker. Still waiting on the drawings. I was told it would be 2 weeks but it’s been 3 weeks now. Not sure if they are having issues and if they are able to pull it off?? Seems like no ones requested this before, so maybe that’s why it’s taking a long time.

The eternity band I’m getting is 3mm(10 pointers) open basket shared prong.

@mtran89, wow, it's amazing, it's beautiful!!!! I wish I could wait to see your perfect recreated custom set before I have to decide on my setting order. I am still on the fence of just taking the less expensive WF classic 6 prong or the Valoria in 14K and finding a local jeweler to customize a wedding band and ER together at the same time. You are so brave to go all custom and go all out for the perfect set!

I’m hoping it turns out well!! I’m patiently waiting for the drawings. They told me they were being finalized on Monday but I still haven’t gotten them.

Previously, I was also thinking of having a local jeweller make it as well because it’s easier to talk and see it in person. But the reason I decided to stick with WF is because I like that the diamonds in the eternity band will also be ACAs. And that getting them made at the same time by the same vendor should ensure that the eternity band will not rub against the prongs. So if there are any issues, they should take care of it.

It was also important to me that the height of the ring and the height of the eternity band were the same. (also similar in width) Having the CAD drawings made together will ensure that they will match each other more precisely.

The photos I uploaded are of the original WF Knife Edge Ring prior to any CAD drawings.

I am paying for the new custom ring. It necessarily isn’t their fault because I chose their stock ring and didn’t request for these details originally. I was advised to wear a spacer in between and I agreed. If I wanted to make sure the rings didn’t rub together, I should have gone custom from the start.

The cost of custom setting is about $400 more than the stock WF setting I believe. Plus $250 for the CAD.

But after receiving the ring, truthfully, I didn’t completely love it. I changed my mind and felt that I would rather have the ring redesigned so I would not have to wear a spacer. If I’m paying this much already for the diamond, I want the ring to be 100% to my liking. It was my own fault for not choosing the right design.

Including the CAD it was an additional ~$650 USD. I think it’s worth going custom! I wish I did from the start.

The eternity band was $4175. It was an additional $250 to create the CAD drawing since WF doesn’t make a shared prong open basket style.

Thanks for the details, mtran. That sounds very reasonable to me! I wish WF would offer an open basket eternity ring. I prefer a basket over their Annette U-prong setting.

Yeah I was surprised they didn’t offer a open basket style eternity band! Seems like such a simple and classic setting.

Please do report back. And with plenty of pictures! It would also be nice if they updated their existing stock designs to work better with wedding bands...Seems like thickening the donut would be a pretty easy fix!

I have the WF 6 prong knife edge with no modifications— and I swear I can never see a difference from the pictures I see with the modifications. They must just be so slight. I liked the option for it to not be custom so that it could be returned if I didn’t love it. I figured I could go custom if it wasn’t spot on— and I loved it! I wouldn’t change a thing. I will say that a shared prong diamond band will eat into the prongs so if that is what you are hoping to get, I’d select a different setting, wear a spacer, or make big modifications. Good luck!

Lol I decided I will either go with a platinum Valoria or a Platinum Knife Edge and just request the prong style and not make any mods. I was thinking if I didn’t soften the knife edge there would be more height. I wish I could of handled both of these settings like you have. Did you select your prong style?

@bps413 have you decided on a setting and are you leaning towards a certain prong style?

Still deciding. I want to go with the WF version with modifications but my gut is telling me my SO will want an eternity band in the future, and I know the Vatche will likely pair better because it sits higher and the prongs will not be at risk of rubbing. It probably makes the most sense to take the extra $ hit now than have to figure it out the hard way in the future. I have until the end of the week! If I go the Vatche route I believe I could still ask for claw prongs.

Ps - WF does offer a 50% lifetime buyback on designer settings should you ever change your mind and want something different. Not sure if that is of interest but figured I would share.

I was thinking if I didn’t soften the knife edge there would be more height. I wish I could of handled both of these settings like you have. Did you select your prong style?

Would there be an option for you to buy both settings and have them shipped to you unset to get a feel for both? I’m not sure if WF would do that but the peace of mind might just cost you shipping.

Both settings are beautiful— the Knife edge just seemed more substantial to me— and I wanted to do that two tone which would have been custom with the valoria.

I believe I said rounded tabs— most mostly I specified I wanted whatever was the classic Tiffany’s look.

They happened to have a white gold return of a Valoria in my approx. diamond size and a smaller one carat wf knife edge that they can ship me for viewing and then send it back and order my permanent platinum setting. My diamond will wait at WF for my setting decision.
