Hi all. The specimens in the photo below arrived yesterday. They are two coloured diamonds from Sierra Leone, one a steely blue, the other a mint green. The pics are from the auction, as these crystals are tiny, about 2 mm across, and the total weight is just 0.12 cts, or 0.024 grams. I think my photo skills might struggle with these!
What struck me is the unusual colours. I presume the blue one might be coloured by traces of boron, and the green one may have been exposed to millions of years of low-level radioactivity. The blue specimen is the most interesting as it is well-crystallised, and appears to be 4 or 5 intergrown octahedra. It almost looks like the crystals formed around a central point.
Has anyone else come across 'fancy' coloured diamonds from this part of the world before? The colours really are quite freaky!
