FI bought me a 6 carat 11x11 square concave cut cushion garnet as a souvenier from jeweler in CA... I''ve been excited for days... it is SO pretty. Don''t have pics yet. But it''s got amazing fire. I don''t know what type of garnet it is, it''s a deep burgundy red with shots of bright red ruby fire from the front... and face down it looks purple/ red and fairly light/ clear. I''ts loupe clean and just beautiful.

What should I do with it? I was thinking about setting it in a pendant with a WG halo. But well... not sure how much that would cost me. Then I thought to set it into this setting I''ve been eyeing from Phillip Noel. But I''m afraid the garnet would be too big for this setting.

lol
I say go for the ring gypsy!!!

you and I both keep going back to this setting, I think it is time to buy!
i am going to give them a call tomorrow, and get some more info!

oooh but it would make a lovely pendant too

a ring would be simply gorgeous.....and that setting would be so rich with the contrast of the garnet that i''d wish it was my e-ring....if i were you, that is!

can''t wait to see pictures of your garnet.

although, it is my personal opinion that a great gorgeous stone does not need to be cluttered up with a lot of diamonds.........

i think the stone as you describe it would be wasted as a pendent...........

not to divert from the thread, but I have to ask...

movie zombie, that is the same setting you told me you didn''t like...was it bc mine will be for an oval?

a rich garnet of that size is meant to ''pop'' and it would do that in that setting. you''re not dealing with a no color diamond here but rich and regal, glorious color! use it to its and your advantage!

ok, i''m prejudiced.......

sophie,

i really didn''t like the pink stone setting....the stone was overpowered by the setting and too busy.
the 2nd one with the blue/green oval held its own against all the busyness.
the 3rd one is nice but much the same as the first two. perhaps a little more delicate, which i actually like because it can make a stone center stone ''pop''. your stone being oval would, i think, require a lot of head reworking and run into some $$$ if you want a halo. i''d like the 3rd one if you didn''t go with a halo.

but it appears you like halos and if you want to do that, then i still like the 2nd one best. the halo is sort of tucked up under the color stone and the color stone remains the star of the show. which for me, the color stone should always be the star of the show. with a budget of $1000 i''d want to limit the amount of reworking to keep my costs low.

however, if you''re willing to drop the halo and perhaps go east/west orientation with the stone then maybe the 3rd one. some depends on your ring finger size.....especially since the pictured hand is not yours!

Welcome back from CA, Gypsy....A concave garnet!!! You lucky girl!!!

I love rings and my tanz. cushion rhr is about 11 x 11 and it''s perfect, but I have a ginormous size 8 finger to put it on.

I''d love to see a pic of the stone to know whether there''d be too much going on with the garnet in that setting.

Okay... got pics. First one here is blurry-- but it shows the color the best and some of the fire.

Here it is without flash and with as little light as possible so that you can see the shape and cut.

Ditto. These last two are a look much darker than what the stone looks like IRL.

Ooh, it looks lovely Gypsy. Have you made a decision on how you''re going to set it or is it still up in the air?

No clue Kismet. LOL. The fire looks so pigeon''s blood that I was thinking of setting it like a classic Henry Winston ring with two tapered baguettes on each side. Something that lets it be the star it is. Movie Zombie was absolutely spot on with that. Not sure if the halo pendant would detract. The ring setting from Phillip Noel though is priced just fabulously. Have to find out whether it can accomodate a head for an 11 x 11 cushion though.

If I did a pave halo I would want really fine diamonds-- really tiny ones. Not ones that look distinct. So that they really just frame it. But I don''t want to pay for custom.

Sophie did you find anything out from Phillip Noel regarding that setting?

I have to call GOG about the Adwar pendant too. And maybe Quest. Hmm.

11x11, nice shape, fire within: definitely a ring! no halo, please!

movie zombie

ps oh, i forgot: it isn''t my stone!

what if you set it sideways, like a baseball diamond for a pendant?? I think it is a very pretty stone!! MAybe you could just put a tiny diamond in each of the 4 corners?? ooooh or like a ropestyle, instead of diamonds??

Wish I could draw you a pic

here is a pic of a vera wang ring I have tried on

but you will have to go to the site, http://www.verawang.com/jewelry the "Epoque collection" #5, twisted wire candy ring....
go check it out, it would be great to showcase a beautiful stone!! (of course without the VW pricetag..

Okay... so that's three votes for no halo. Oh wait... that was just MZ voting three times...lmao. I got it. If I make it into a pendant then I will want a halo. In a ring... no halo. I will have to find out about the Phillip Noel setting's head change because I haven't been able to find another setting I like that is as affordable.

Sophie... would be niced if you could draw me a pic too. I like it set like a kite or baseball diamond a lot... but not with diamonds on the corners.

Um... I wonder if anyone would provide some photoshop help with setting the from Phillip Noel. If it would be possible to see my garnet set straight on as a square and also set as a kite <> in that setting?

Sophie-- the twisted wire candy ring is beautiful. Actually the phillip noel is a little bit like a twisted wire david yurman I like alot. So it's ironic that you posted that.

it seems we hsve similar tastes!

Oh it is a beautiful stone! How lucky are you??? I love the pave setting idea. Do you already have a RHR? If you I would do a necklace, if not RHR.

I have a pave halo oval persian turquoise ring that I don''t like for a RHR and a sapphire and diamond RHR as well... both were presents for me... both 18K WG. Neither one is my taste-- although the sapphire one comes closer than the turquoise but the tuqouise is the larger one and gets the most compliments. Would like a Garnet RHR... and a pendant. A set. LOL. Which might be possible. At a later point in time. I could call that jeweler up ans see what other cushions he has. The price was reasonable. And the other concaves he had were beautiful as well... especially the peridot and the garnets. HMMMM. LOL. I was holding it up against my neck last night and it looked good there. The concave facetting really lends itself to darker gems stones-- -livens them up. I have to say I am a BIG fan.

cheers--Sharon

hallo appears to me to over power the color stone in the ring.

LMAO okay... will have to grab a pic of it... I warn you the setting is well... it leaves something to be desired. In the daylight tomorrow I''ll grab a pic. Okay??

As for a halo... I would want a VERY EXTREMELY delicate halo if I got one for the garnet... like FG''s halo around her pear. I''m not into overly ornate in your face bling.

Sophie I like that orientation. A LOT.

MZ-- yes the halo on the garnet ring sophie posted is very overpowering IMO too. (plus it comes set as a ring... interesting price that). I''ll see if I can find pics of what I''m thinking of.

Sophie I have a necklace set like that (amethyst with a diamond halo) and LOVE it. It makes it a little more unique.

sounds very pretty, of course we need pics!!!

I was thinking of a really thin halo like the one on this ring for the pendant.
