Thanks!!! You guys are so sweet!!! Now i can finally get back to planning my wedding... *groan*

Yes, the exams were quite rough... Put it this way, I lost 7 lbs in a week and a half, just by stress, and frankly, I got a degree AND a size smaller for it!

...So I am a happy camper! Thanks again, and hopefully I will put into practice everything I learned... But I still have so much more to learn!

How wonderful!!!

I saw the new title, but just thought she''d been modest before

Congratulations, Nicrez. Now...when is the wedding?

Deb :-)
Well it's rapidly appraoching! One is on August 9th and another on August 12th... We have both been so busy that only now am I really getting the time and energy to take care of the finer details...

I am starting to realize that anyone who eloped just sort of had the right ide! Basically I would rather do well in school and set up my career than to have perfectly matching napkins at my wedding. But now that I am without homework or studying, I have more time to CARE about matching anything!

My GG was actually the best thing I ever did, and I am so glad that I had someone as supportive and wonderful druing that time as my fiance. He honestly was a GEM, (

)and helped to keep me sane when I obsessed over exams, and took myself way to seriously...

During my graduation speech I was so flustered and emotional that I completely forgot to thank him, and I wanted to do it now, in case he's reading.

So as if it was the Oscars (or my graduation past):

" I would most especially like to thank the man who made it all possible... My fiance, my ROCK... Rand." *weeping ensues*

**note to self, stress out REALLY major and lose weight...**

Congrats!! The wedding planning does suck doesnt it. I can NOT wait till its done.

Oh that''s wonderful news.
Good for you Nicrez.

Congrats!!!

Yay for you, Nicrez! I have often thought about taking the GIA Distance Education GG courses, but since I have 2 children at home, I feel my life is not my own at this point. Also, until I have a specific career goal in mind, I can''t justify the expense of taking the classes. Maybe someday, but how I would fit into the industry, beyond just a hobby, is going to take a lot more thought.

Congratulations on your new GG title and good luck with your wedding plans!!

Ah yes, the dreaded 20 stone Gem-ID Final. That was one of the most stressful things I did in my life too ... the pressure of knowing you will fail if you mis-identify ANY of the specifmens.

You should feel very proud of your accomplishments and I know the PS community if very proud of you too.

Actually, the online courses can be taken at your leisure. I can't say if you will have the time to study properly, but it certainly is more time-friendly than the intensive 6 month course. No one is pushing you, but that's also a negative.

I think the industry could REALLY use some non-industry professionals. I happen to know that GG's are useful with a variety of experience, such as Law, Accounting, Marketing, Management, etc... Sadly even when I was at GIA, there were Human Resource people there who couldn't tell you a sapphire from a pebble. No Gemology there, and sadly, I think it would be great if GGs came from all over the career spectrum.

You even have GGs on PS with Engineering degrees, Chemistry degrees, and some with many other degrees.

Eventually, I may return to school for my MBA in Marketing, so I don't rule anything out.

Look at CFlutist! She's a prime example of someone who is a Gemologist but isn't in the industry. Should she ever decide to come into the gem industry, she could help propel some large company into the 21st century with a technological advancement department or something of a CTO of DeBeers...

Anyway, the expense is a bit tough for some, but if you want, apply for the courses, and take your time at first. Set your own pace, and take the chance to learn something that could possibly change your career and your life. I notice so many people don't LOVE what they do. I was one of those people, and I was entirely comfortable in my place, thinking I want to be a lawyer go to lawschool because it's a safe, comfortable job that makes good money...

Well, I dropped everything just to be broke for 6 months, spent well over $25,000+ in those months, and now will get paid ONE THIRD of what I used to make, in order to be happy in the long term. I took the HARD way, but the online courses are the far easier (time-wise and financially). You just have to motivate yourself, and no goal is out of reach!

I went to a seminar of a woman who at 48 changed her career from an Investment Banker on Wall Street to a Gemologist and Estate Jewlery Buyer, and her company (5 years later) is worth twice what she was worth at her peak in investment banking. She sells luxury items to some of the most famous buyers, and even owns pieces of Princess Diana's jewlery as well as Jackie O... Not bad for someone changing late in life!

My wordy message was: You never know where it may take you, if you just take the time to try it!

Thank you, Nicrez, for your encouragement. I recently had a similarly enthusiastic conversation with Martin Fuller (appraiser in Virginia) about taking the plunge into the online courses. I think I need to pull out the information that GIA sent me and give it some more thought.

I encourage you to give it some more thought too. While it was stressful at times, I also had a lot of fun. If you do it through distance education, the GIA will mail you diamonds to grade (missed a small pinpoint once can called a VVS1 an IF ... LOL). When you do the Gem ID course, they will mail you stones to identify for weeks on end.

While I don''t work in the industry, I feel it was money well spent to learn a tremendous amount about gemology.

Congrats on all that hard work

Congratulations Nicrez!!! You''ve been a tremendous help to me as well as others here on PS!

As I''ve said in another thread, if professor-hood doesn''t work out for me, I think I''ll give gemology a try.

Congrats Nicrez! Now what are you going to do with it?

About the GIA mailing stones to students. . .isn''t there concern about stones not being returned or does GIA rely on insurance?

When I did it the rule was, you lose it, you pay, simple as that. Not to worry too much though, most were in the .25 - .33 ct range.

Okay, thanks!

I''m thinking of taking this course. . .I don''t plan to run off with any of the diamonds (unless a gorgeous two carat is sent to me - lol!), but still, I wondered about diamonds being shipped out to various students around the country (world?) and how often a diamond is lost or whatever and what the procedure is
