Has anyone heard of cremation diamonds? I heard about it the other day and found this link on the web:

http://jewelry.about.com/cs/syntheticdiamonds/a/lifegem_diamond.htm

i was wondering your thoughts and opinions.

I have heard of this where they can turn cremated remains into " diamonds". What a way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I should have enough to make a 5 carat at least!

yeah - apparently there are two color options- well at least on the www.lifegem.com site i checked out. And of course it cost money...

i''m not sure if there are colorless versions out there too.

Hmmmmm - maybe I''ll go for pink

If it was the person''s wish to have the process done I would wear the stone created, I think it''s a lovey way to remember the person by, the site also says they can do it with pets, I wonder how much they charge for the process of human or animal? I find it kind of morbid, but I also think it''s nicer than having an urn with ashes on your mantle.

yeh, i find there''s a difference between pets and people...

i know i wouldn''t want an urn of ashes of my pet, but i don''t have a backyard to bury the pet in either- (besides if you move-- u don''t move the pet)

and i am not sure i am up for a pet cemetary either...

I have lots of urns with my deceased pet's ashes in - I can't bear the thought of leaving them behind if I move. It comforts me to know they are with me. If money was no object - I would have this done for each and keep each diamond in a special lit glass display case. However, I would probably be better off using the money to help animals in need. It is a lovely idea though IMO for pets, but what about a diamond encrusted urn??

oh and on lifegem.com i think it mentioned that you only need 8 oz. of the ashes. so you could do both?

Did you see the prices? For a .90 - .99 ct the price ranges from 13,000 to 20,000 depending on the color. I don''t know...I think its a little creepy. I guess I could understand why someone would have it done but I still think it is unsettling. IMO

yes it''s not cheap!

Personally way back when I heard of this, my first thought was GROSS!!! no way do I want to carry around someone''s remains in my diamonds.

Oh dear lord. That''s totally freaking weird.

Id be far more inclined to go yellow than blue. The blue is still just odd to me.

Goodgod that''s ridiculously pricey!

I am sorry, that is just too freakin weird.

At first I thought this was freaky....

But did you read the little story on their web page? each family member made a ring from the ashes of her niece... and when the family gets together for holidays...it''s like she''s there too... (it was touching...)

I honestly don''t know if I''d ever do it....

That''s even more creepy, each person wearing the ring with a piece of the niece inside? What ever happened to a nice little urn??

and see- an urn creeps me out.

an urn kind of creeps me out too

I dont know...part of me is like that would be interesting, the other part says never! I guess I''d want something sentimental to carry with me from that person, and for some people maybe this diamon fills that need, for me, it could be a piece of jewelry passed down or even something as simple as a picture. I am not an urn person. When my grandparents passed away we scattered them in their lake & garden. Don''t tell the new owners, we snuck on to the property to put my grandma in her old garden

It is really pricey though. I wonder how many people actually sign up for that. If I had the extra money to spend on that, it would probably be better spent as a donation to a charity in that persons/pets name like Lorelei said.

I love my family and I love our pets. I dont think a shiney object would help me grieve. That said I am for anything which helps people work through their greif...this just is not my taste.
I also think it would be kinda creepy/scary to inherit an actual peice of a family member...

I don''t want to be burned and pressed into a ring. I want to either be donated to medical science or cryogenically frozen and sent into space.

If they made a diamond out of me it would have lots of flaws.

But I bet it would sparkle just like your posts, Kenny dear!!!!

what''s more creepy is that there''s no proof the ashes are from your family member. is there?

Aw Shucks!

Also what do you do with the rest...only 8oz? I just wodner how do you get this approved by your town bussiness people. That clip they have attached was just too weird.

Oh well, in for a penny, in for a pound as we are discussing cremated remains, I have actually been inside a crematorium as they creeped me out ever since the Bond movie Diamonds are Forever, the bit where Bond was in the coffin. It was fascinating and not horrid at all as I thought. They are very careful to ensure there are no mix ups with the ashes.

I heard of "lifegems" a few years ago and thought - "well, that''s one way to do it".

But you didn''t get a very large stone for all that money and I couldn''t figure out what the family would want with it.

What if they lost it or a burglar stole it? (we wuz robbed and they stole Grandma . . . .)

Then I saw the site on an "urban legends" list.

They were being debunked by someone who posed the question "how do you know that "diamond" is really you"?

They seemed to imply that these people were taking in ashes and handing back a cubic zirconia.

So a big grain of salt for turning yourself into a diamond.
