I'm hoping maybe someone else has experienced or heard about this, and can tell me what (if anything) to do. Sorry it's long, I don't want to leave anything out that could be relevant!

A couple of weeks ago I went to a grocery store to buy a couple bottles of wine. This grocery store happens to be in a somewhat dangerous area of town (near USC in Los Angeles), not sure if that's relevant or not. I was carded (obviously) at the register. On my way out (just outside the doors), two middle-aged men approached me--they were both wearing civilian clothes, and one had a police badge around his neck.

They asked for my driver's license without explaining why, and I refused at first because the whole thing felt very sketchy. I asked repeatedly why they needed to see my ID, and they were very pushy and seemed not to want to answer. They finally said that it was a random check and that I looked too young to be buying alcohol (the wine was in a plastic bag at this point, so they were only assuming from the shape that it was alcohol). After a lot of pressuring I handed them my ID, still not sure whether to believe that they were actually police, since they were not in uniform.

One of them became much friendlier after I handed them my ID and tried to make conversation with me (trying to distract me??), while the other walked a few steps away. I asked what he was doing and the guy said he was phoning in my driver's license number to make sure it was valid. He was on the phone for about 30 seconds, then came back and handed me my license and said they were "all done." I just wanted to get away because the whole thing still felt very confrontational and off, but since they returned my ID to me I assumed there could have been no harm done.

My question is... does this happen?? Do police do this, out of uniform? Could they have actually been criminals just posing as police to get my information?

I told FI about this yesterday and he told me I should be worried about identity theft and checking my credit report--but my social security number is not on my driver's license, so do I actually need to worry about that? I then called my father to get his take, and he said he was only worried that they could be potentially stalking me (thanks, dad).

Anyone have any ideas?

Wow, that does sound odd to me. Sometimes we get sucked into a situation even thou the gut says this may not seem right and things happen so fast that we''re just trying to do the right thing. Believe me, I know. I have never heard or experienced this myself. But is possible to call the store and mention how you were approached? Just as a potential "heads up" if some shady stuff was going on? Also, can you call the police department and report this?

I''m glad that you are o.k.

Remember, I just heard this this morning. There is nothing like a women''s intuition

Hi Musey,

I used to live in LA (Brentwood) so I know what you mean re USC. Lots of people not in CA don't have a fair grasp on the area *off* campus. It does sound weird to me to. I can only say always trust your intuition. And if something like that happened again, (god forbid), you are well within your rights to say "I'm uncomfortable standing out here, can we step back into the store." Any police officer that is legit, esp if you are a young girl getting card buying your weekend booze (lol), is not going to see you as a threat and comply. It could have been completely legit - but imho - those guys have more to do around USC then follow you around to check your Pinot!

BTW, for awhile there has been the scams - where a man dressed like a cop and in a cop car pulls women over on the highways at night, and unfortunately assaults and rapes them. The advice that went out after many of these is that IF YOU ARE EVER WITH A POLICE OFFICER, AND DON'T FEEL SAFE - YOU CAN CALL THE POLICE TOO. If he is a real cop, he'll stick around, maybe be annoyed with you, but if he is not he'll flee, and it will beat any alternative that could have happened.

Be careful out there!!! Stock up on the weekdays in the morning!!!

I forgot to add - - - you can call the police department and ask if your license number was run that night, if you know the date. It may give you some peace of mind - I would only still be scared now if you think the guy was not a cop and read your address off there.

Jennifer, that''s the EXACT story that was running through my mind during this whole thing... that''s why as long as they gave me my ID back and didn''t rape me I was happy to leave and assume everything was fine, haha

I''ve read about this. The criminals usually want to hijack somebody''s car or rob or assault their victims.

Do put a fraud alert on your credit. Your drivers liscense has your name your address & you DL # which a criminal can use. I would call the store manager & give them a description of the guys & ask if they employ them. At least you will know if they work for the store or not & the store will be on the lookout for these guys.

Edited to say that these days anyone can find a very real looking faux police badge. If that ever happens again tell them you want to call the police to verify their identity. A real police officer would have no problem with you doing that.

Call the police dept. and ask them. If this is not something that they do it is a concern that someone now has your home address and DL#. I think it is very possible that there have been complaints (especially if it''s near a university) of underage drinking and selling alcohol to minors. It would make sense for police to wait ununiformed and call in a DL # to be sure it isn''t a fake. Either way, I''m sorry this is so unnerving for you.

this is really odd, i would not have given them my ID at all. i would have turned around, gone back into the store and had the store clerk call the police to come out there and confirm if the two guys were cops. they cannot fault you for being careful as a woman if they are real cops...i would totally check your credit and put a fraud alert on your stuff. really weird!

If the police suspect a business of selling cigarettes/alcohol to minors, they send in a underage decoy to make a purchase.

Hey Musey,

I agree with Miranda. Just call the cops and ask them. THey'll certainly have a record of whether officers were posted there, or at least be able to tell you whether it's something they do.

I got a weird call from a 'bank' the other day that just seemed odd. So I took the person's name and number and called the fraud-squad of the actual bank and said 'Does Mr. Dude work for you? Is this a valid number? Is this something you'd call about?' and they said 'YUP! YUP! YUP!' Put my mind at ease.

Maybe it will for yours too!

This is slightly different, but I know of a scam in Eastern Europe where people will pose as police officers, asking to see your passport, and then refuse to give it back unless you give them money. After it happened to some friends of mine and they ended up having to give the guys $50 to get their passports back, we figured out that if you''re at all suspicious, ALWAYS ask them to accompany you to a police station and say that you''ll show them there.

I''d definitely check your credit and everything -- that just sounds weird to me.

i agree that you should call the police station. if they called in to check your license there should be record of that and they should also be able to show you pictures of local officers if you go in and tell them what happened.

i think it could have been legit as they could have been checking id''s just as they said and they could have been looking for a suspect. no need to worry when you can call or go in and either put your mind at ease or get them to investigate what happened.

That makes me feel very uneasy. I actually lived in that area for a few months many years ago and it was sketchy then too!

I agree it would be best to call the police station and see if this is something that is regularly done. I really doubt it though as it is up to the store itself to ID you, which they did. Very fishy and very disconcerting, to say the least.

Could you have written down the badge number? I wouldn''t think real police officers could refuse this type of request.

I read that (here in Toronto) you can''t refuse showing ID to Law Enforcement who are legitimately investigating possible criminal activity.

They couldnt steal her ID from just a license. From what she said they could have been police officers/detectives. I dont know the department policy of that agency but SDPD can do what she says they did. My advice to her would be to ask for a uniformed supervisor to come by. If she asks for that most agencies will do it. If they dont want to, be wary.
Thank you, SDLady... this does make me feel a lot better. I wasn't too worried about identity theft since the address listed on my driver's license is not connected to any of my credit cards, etc. but I didn't know what they could do with a license number. I'm planning to give the PD a call tomorrow just to double check, but this has put my mind more at ease.

Thank you EVERYONE for your feedback and help. It's so nice to have helpful people to bounce things off of, and I really appreciate all of you taking the time to reply to my post. Thanks again!!

You're very welcome.

I'm glad the information helped.

Musey, just my bit of advice as a cops wife.. don't wait until tomorrow to call. The department has a non-emergency phone number that's open, I would call them and let them know what's happened so its documented today. Let them know you were unnerved by how things happened and want to make sure that its been documented.
Does it make a difference at this point, since this happened two weeks ago? And if you're supposed to do it right after, should I even still call since it's been so long? (I've had such bad experience with the LAPD that I always avoid dealing with them if I can

there is a difference? (with a very few exceptions)
well other than the badge and uniform....
