Both diamonds are .75, same price range and are going into a white gold setting

1)VVS2
F COLOR
VG CUT
VG POLISH
GOOD SYMMETRY (how much will this affect the brilliance?)

2)SI1
H COLOR
EXC CUT
EXC POLISH
EXH SYMMETRY

Sight unseen, which is a better option?

Neither.

The cut of the f sounds bad and there's no way to tell if the h is eye clean.

Why are these the only two options?

Circumstances make these two stones viable options at this moment.

Could you be more specific? Are you required to buy from a certain vender? These are the only two in budget? You're limited because of the setting you want?

HI:

At the very least, any dimensions?

cheers--Sharon

This is for the VVS2. I do not have the dimensions on the SI1 at hand.
Measurements 6.13 - 6.19 x 3.56 mm
Depth 57.8 %
Table 57 %
Crown Angle 27.0°
Crown Height 11.0%
Pavilion Angle 41.6°
Pavilion Depth 43.5%
Star Length 50%
Lower Half 80%
Girdle Thin to Slightly Thick, 3.5%
Culet Small

The place I am buying the setting is about $500 cheaper than any place I've looked and these are the two options available in my price range that aren't way out of my realistic diamond spec ( I color or better, SI1 eye clean, VG-Exc cut). And the jeweler is out of state.

OMG run away! I plugged the numbers into the HCA, and it is so bad it won't even assign it a number; all it says is "Low crown angle can result in chipping of the girdle. Should not be considered for purchase."

It is way too shallow, it has an extremely low crown angle, and it will be a very poor performer. PLEASE don't buy it - we can find you MUCH better!

Just glancing at the numbers...is their a typo/error? Cuz it might be a pancake. Where did these numbers come from--what kind of a document?

cheers--Sharon

Well I guess that eliminates that one. I'm still learning what to look for and now that I saw that HCA tool, this whole post could have been avoided lol. I appreciate the help that is for sure.

Whew. What about the other one? Does it have any certification?

cheers--Shaorn

Yes the SI1 is GIA certified.

HI:

Can you get the GIA document number?
Sounds a little more promising!

How much does the H cost?

I will get that report tomorrow and check it out.

~$3050 for the SI1

Hmm yes seems a tad overpriced, might be why the setting is cheaper. What setting did she want?

Yikes, no. Too shallow, that crown angle cannot be accurate. PASS.

There is a reason this place is "cheaper" than others. It's because these stones are not well cut.

<Snip>

The GIA Excellent cut runs the gamut from really beautiful to excremental. But, hey, they know that and count on you NOT knowing that, so the cutters can cut diamonds that weigh more than they should, making for just a little bit larger profit margin on those poorly cut stones that are labeled as Excellent. If you are cutting say, three to five thousand diamonds per month and make only $10 more per diamond, well that adds up pretty quick as that would be $30,000 to $50,000 per month extra. Pretty sure they are making more than $10 extra per diamond too...

You really need to be able to see some diamonds to know what your eye likes, but in the meantime, be sure only to buy a diamond from someone who has an excellent return policy if you do not love it at first sight.

Wink
