Hi all,

This is my first post in the colored stone forum. I have wanted a sapphire ring for a long time. Am not a huge jewelry wearer so I have been thinking band. I made what t thought was an offer on the lower end and it was accepted for this ring, $1850. http://www.doverjewelry.com/product/estate-5-00cts-diamond-sapphire-18k-gold-eternity-band/ Can you tell me what you think of the ring and if it is worth what I paid? It is on the way to me currently so I have not seen it in person but it is returnable if I have made a huge mistake. Thanks in advance for your input!

The ring looks nice although the sapphires look to be closer to commercial quality.

Thanks for the reply Chrono. I know nothing about colored stones. What makes you think that? Also, it seems that Dover took the link down but here is hopefully the first dibs pic to look at. Any other thoughts? https://www.1stdibs.com/id-j_444032

The blue is so dark that it will probably look almost blackish in person.

I don't know if what you paid was fair. However, I agree with Chrono that when on the sapphires will probably be nearly black. Did you wanted a very dark blue? I have a very dark blue sapphire set in a high setting. It flashes a beautiful indigo sometimes but I don't think the flatter setting will do that.

No, I don't want a really dark blue. A few of the other pictures showed the stones being a more recognizable shade of blue. I am hoping the darkest ones are just due to lighting maybe? What should I look for in the stones when I receive the ring? Luckily, I can return it after I get a chance to look at it if it is dark. Thanks!

I also thought exactly what Chrono said. I'm afraid that the sapphires will most likely appear very dark unless you have extremely strong lighting on them, which is probably how they got them to appear lighter in some of the pics.

They look like pretty typical, rather dark commercial quality sapphires, although I do think the ring itself is a very pretty setting. If you like it when you see it, then you paid a fair price :). If not, you can return it with no harm done.

I think what you need to look for is that the color is to your liking.

The ring is pretty and should be comfortable for daily wear.

Thanks all! The ring should be here Monday or Tuesday. I will keep you, posted. I appreciate all the comments.

Hi all,

Quick update: I received the ring and it was lovely but too big and as predicted a bit dark. It wasn't as dark as it looked in the picture but darker than I was interested in. Thanks for all the replies and help!

I'm sorry it didn't work out. From this experience, when shopping online, look for sapphires that are slightly lighter than you want and you are more likely to end up with the colour you like.

...and ask lots of questions of the vendor re extinction, dominant color and modifiers, how it looks in various lighting situations and whether it ever just "goes dark."

As usual, good advice from Chrono and Minous.

Sorry this one didn't work out; just chalk it up to a learning experience. Thanks for posting your update! Hope you find something just right for you.
