This is my very first custom cut gemstone buy. I have always love a yellow diamond but not the pricetag....After looking at the recommendation, I decided to approach Barry, acstones. I was delighted when he brought up that he have some rough and is able to cut a chrysoberyl round for me. But as soon as it was mentioned, he emailed me again to say that all the rough are not good to cut as they are of a bad color/very included... that is so disappointing to hear...where can I get a good chrysoberyl round? I saw one on the whitesgem it is going around $580, it''s way way off my budget. Suggestion please?...thank you for letting me share.

You know I really admire Barry''s honesty. I think it was great of you to tell you that the color was less than perfect. He''s done that for me on many occasions as well.

What is your budget and what size stone are you looking for?

hi agnesq! What a coincidence, I have the same request for a RB Chrysoberyl from Barry last month too! He told me the same thing as well that it will not turn out as great. Do you like a greenish one or a more yellowish one? What is your budget like? I had seen that RB Chrysoberyl from Jeff White, I think it was custom-cut for a fellow Pser (if wanna run a search). Personally I find it very expensive

exactly. Barry really gets my respect. He has been straight up like this with me on a number of occasions too - usually I am a bit down, but I trust his judgment 100%.

Yes, it is disappointing you cannot get what you are after straight away - but I think it is much better for everyone when the cutter tells you upfront they cannot meet your needs - saves getting your hopes up for an ultimately disappointing transaction, right?

Hope you can find your stone soon.

You mean to say that you had asked for a custom-cut chrysoberyl from Barry? My budget is no more than 200. Just do not want brown, okay with any color, great to be a yellow diamond look-alike...

I believed that this question is for me?:) Yes, I requested for it about a month ago. I thought that he will not have anymore rough to offer. Why don''t you check out multicolor and Tan''s shop? Good luck!

Wow, kudos to Barry for upfront honesty!

Agnesg, I’m not sure of the size you are looking for but I believe Gene of www.precisiongem.com has a few pieces of rough that should cut around 1 ct thereabouts.

Gene has much more smaller pieces available...

What is the appeal of chrysoberyl? A lot of people seem to want it, but why? Somebody explain it to me, please . . .

Because chrysoberyl is exceptionately hard, it takes a great polish and has a fine luster, which, when well cut, makes it sparkle like crazy. A photo cannot accurately capture the sparkle and luster well.

As for the color, most are pretty dull in color from what I''ve seen. They''re typically desaturated and very greyish or brownish. However, when you get one that is neon, they can actually glow. My chrysoberyl is the brightest stone in my collection, and it''s not because it''s light in tone, or it''s yellowish. It is because it has excellent saturation, great luster and sparkle.

If you don''t like chartreuse colors, then you probably wouldn''t like it. I would consider my stone a neon chartreuse like the gym shoes I posted in another thread. That color is really rare in nature, and unfortunately hard to come by in chrysoberyl, but it does exist. Here are the gymshoes again for reference with my chrysoberyl lying on it''s face.

Did you see this thread?

@ TL Yes, and I should have circled back here (I asked my chrysoberyl question again on that thread, so ignore pls). I really didn''t understand it could be neon!

I''ve only seen weird washed out yellowish stones on most cutters'' sites, so this is really good to know. Thanks, TL!

I''ve learned so much here on PS: I never knew spinel could be as vivid as Mahenge, I didn''t know all the color variations in different stones, all kinds of cool stuff.

I used to feel smart because I knew sapphire came in more than just blue . . .

Okay, while i''m learning, what the heck is a cuprian? (momentary threadjack, sorry)
