so i went to the fabric store a few weeks ago to get some fabric for a trial veil and all they had was bridal illusion tulle, which is pretty stiff, and i wasn''t a huge fan of. i did a little poking around online and decided that i wanted silk tulle for my cathedral length veil, so that it would be more flowy (plus, i can''t imagine 108 inches of stiff tulle being all that beautiful). but now i can''t find silk tulle for sale anywhere! not in stores, not online (that isn''t sold in bulk), not anywhere

so i''m not sure what to do. maybe it was just a cheap bridal illusion tulle that i bought earlier, and others aren''t like that? am i going to have to order the silk tulle special order, which will likely cost as much as just buying one? i would really appreciate anyone''s input that has made their own veil or that''s had a cathedral length veil about what kind of fabric you used and/or where you got it from. thanks

Fabric.com has two widths of what looks like a softer tulle available:

54" Wide

108" Wide

You can order a swatch from them to feel it yourself, or just call them up and have one of the sales associates go check it out for you. I've ordered from them a bunch of times and they are super great.

There is definitely more and less nice non-silk tulle available for sale. I have some of each and the finer stuff is very soft and billowy. Is there another fabric store with more selection that you could try?

Also, try searching for "Silk Netting". Tulle is sort of a generic word for netting and quite a few fabric stores sell it under netting. You can also look for online stores that sell good quality fabric for clothing construction (not Joann!) and call them up.

Try going to a specialty fabric store... most medium-sized towns have at least one. They specialize in finer fabrics, trimmings, and sometimes carpet. If they don't have what you need then you can order it.

eta: I don't remember it being any more expensive to special order any of my items

thanks for the suggestions girls. i''ll give some other fabric stores a try and call that online store to see if those might be more fitting to what i am looking for. it just makes me nervous!

Hi Mimzy,

I don''t know exactly what type of veil you are going to make, but another idea might be to check out a bridal consignment shop if you have one near you. I found one last week, and they pulled some mantillas for me to try with the dresses. I tried one mantilla that was soooooooooooo long. It had to be 12 feet long or more. We kept talking about how we could cut different pieces of it and use it to redesign parts of the dresses that I was trying.

My point -- this was a lovely, lovely mantilla. They had it labeled as being from 1950. It was $35!! So, if you found something like that, if you didn''t like the lace, you could remove it and still have plenty of fine fabric to work with!

Actually, they have veils too. Let me know if you''re near CT, and I can post the shop details for you if you''re interested.
