Does a stone look bigger on a narrow band?

I am looking at settings for my upgrade and have noticed that when I look at photos of other PS''rs rings, the solitaires are sometimes set in thin bands. I have read that a stone will appear larger on a small finger size (due to coverage, I presume) and am wondering if a thin banded setting has a simlar effect? While I love those Leon solitaires (Boston Jeff, Harriet, etc.) I don''t think that look is for me-I''d like something a bit more substantial looking.

I''m hoping to work with Mark Morrell in the future and set a 3-3.5 RB in one of his solitaire settings. Probably similar to one of those on his website that he calls the flame or torchiere. Any guesses as to their width and how that will affect the appearance (btw, my ring size is a 6) of the rock?

Well a 3-3.5 is quite substantial thin/thicker shank or no!

Have you emailed MM for info?

Some think a thinner shank makes a stone pop, but sometimes, I think a slightly thicker shank lends itself to a more substantial look in general.

In any case a 3-3.5 will pop in a MM ring--can't wait to see!

Hopefully Gwennie or other MM enthusiasts will chime in.

I think so. Btw, thanks for the compliment!

Absolutely. A thinner band will make the stone pop out more and look more substantial.

Anything under 2.5-3 mm is still thin, and I think all of MM solitaires are that size or under. You''ll be fine with a 3 ct. stone! The classic solitaires look so wonderful with a diamond wedding band, too!

Yes, I believe so... 2mm or so really make the rock stand out! Esp of that Carat weight!

I cannot wait until you post some hand shot pics!

YES. Most definitely :-)

Thanks for your opinions. Coati, I haven''t contacted MM yet b/c I haven''t wanted to bother him until I get closer to a stone (I lost my original ering and am biding my time for a major upgrade). I know that answering e-mails and phone messages must be time consuming. I am so enamored with his work and am so glad I found him here on PS. This forum has opened up a whole new world to me!

DS, we are thinking along the same lines regarding the solitaire and a band. I just love the way yours look together. There are so many gorgeous bands out there that I am thinking of collecting several (over a few years) and wearing them in different combinations with the solitaire and sometimes stacked on my right hand, just bands. These boards and the resources here have really helped me to refine my thinking and get in touch with what speaks to me. I am mostly a classic girl but I like some pizzazz with my traditional and I love the idea of changing up the look when it suits me.

Harriet, I followed some of your cushion threads and love the solitaire by Leon. A question: does it spin or flop alot? I haven''t looked at any cushions in person yet but am considering one cut with those chunky, antique looking flashes of light and color. I recall that you were interested in the same thing at some point? I may be deciding between that look and a RB. What tipped your decision?

Hi,
My solitaire neither spins nor flops.

I was and am still looking for an antique cushion. For my e-ring, we decided on an RB because it''s classic.

Thanks for the info. I am undecided on the antique or antique-look cushion vs. RB. I agree that the RB is so perfectly classic. At the same time, those chunky flashes call to me. Think I am going to be in NY in a couple of months and will go see Mark at ERD so that I can look at them in person. I''m hoping that will help with my decision. Did it take you long to find your RB?

Not really. I liked the ACAs and there was one in my size and price range. Ooh, may I come cushion shopping with you?

Would love for you to join me! I''m trying to learn about the different types of cushions but I feel somewhat inadequate after reading the many posts, including Cehrabehra''s charts and analyses. I''m hoping that Mark will be able to point me in the right direction! I''m going to call him in the next month or two, get his input and hope to see him at Easter break.

Did you think at all about cushions and bands? One of the things that I like about the RB is the possibility of wearing different bands to suit my mood (I''m thinking small eternity style) and am not sure if that will work with a cushion solitaire.

Great. Just let me know.

I think a cushion is just as versatile as a RB.

I agree that a cushion is great but I do love a RB especially for an e-ring. My bf was dead set on a cushion because he felt a RB was too common.

cushions are beautiful and in that size it will be stunning! I do think narrow bands does make the diamond look larger but ultimately go with what you love. A diamond that size will look huge no matter what!!!
