I think a well-cut diamond looks incredibly sparkly at a distance because all you see is the light play. The closer it gets to your face, the more you might see the facets, table, the actual "diamond."

Makes any sense?

I like the look of a diamond up close cause I like to see all the facets etc, but far away is nice too.

Of course I can't tell what exactly you are seeing, but what you say comes close to Garry's comments about those black Iscope spots... that the respective marks turn in diamonds that looks better from a distance when there is no shadow on them.

Could it be ?

I think they look different. When I was choosing between three stones, I made my poor husband wear them in the temporary holders and walk around moving his hand so I could see how they would look from a greater distance. Now I just make him model the EightStar
