Double vs single prongs?

I stopped by a local jewelry store today to look at some settings to get ideas for setting my new asscher. The owner does beautiful work, all handmade and, to my surprise, it may be within my budget. When talking to the jeweler, I mentioned some ideas I''ve been sort of considering, including double prongs. If I''m not mistaken, I''ve read here that it should protect the stone better, plus I really like the look with asschers. He was really trying to talk me out of it, saying that single prongs would look better, are just as safe and are much less likely to get caught on clothes. He had some beautiful rings with double prongs in his store so it''s not that he can''t make them. So what are your thoughts on double prongs vs single ones, particularly with a larger, softer stone? Are they really that much of a pain to deal with? Mind you, this is not something I plan on wearing daily anyway. Is there really a reason to stay away from them?

I have rings with both single and double prongs (chosen according to the size of the stone). No difference.

I personally find it odd he said that to you. Maybe he has issues with setting stones with double prongs. Double prongs are very popular and Leon Mege uses them quite often. I prefer them with flat cornered stones like asschers, and I find them to be more protective of the gem.

I LOVE double prongs and insisted on them for my e-rings.

I love double prongs, but think they''re especially good for stones like asschers--where the double prongs would better outline the octagonal shape.

There''s really no different between double and single prongs other than a little more security, protection, and a refined look for square stones. I''m not sure why anyone would try to steer you away from them.

I also haven''t heard of any of the negatives you mentioned. Its simply a different aesthetic feel; if anything, it adds security, and doesn''t take away from it.

Ditto!

Thanks for your thoughts on this! I''m definitely leaning towards double prongs and I''m kind of puzzled too why the jeweler tried to steer me away from them. I''ll try to get a better sense of it next time I meet with him.
