We may be stuck with an August wedding in Houston (HOT HOT HOT). I am in love with this dress, but it''s got sleeves. I know they are illusion sleeves with lace, but will that look silly for a summer wedding? People wear strapless dresses in the winter. Your thoughts?

Hey Courtney! I''ll be having an August wedding in Louisiana....so I hear you about the heat! As far as the sleeves go, it all depends I guess. Will this be an outdoor or indoor ceremony? Either way, I don''t think that these sleeves will be uncomfortable with the heat. They are so sheer that I don''t think they will make any affect at all.

Beautiful dress btw!

Hey there. I'm living in Houston now and know how hot it gets. In my opinion, I think you should look for another dress. I have worn lace sleeves before and actually found them HOTTER! than regular sleeves. Trust me- they often have the opposite effect than what you'd expect. Also, is this dress made out of satin at the bottom? Satin in general is very hot and heavy- more of a winter fabric.

I'd check into dupioni silk- it's very light! I tried on a dupioni that was so light it felt like linen- the dress was so comfortable and light I didn't want to put my jeans back on!

Hmmm...Misysu may be right. I''ve never really worn lace sleeves, and honestly, something with sleeves wasn''t even an option for me, so I guess I can see where Misy is coming from. The heat is sometimes unbearable here in the South and the satin skirt does look quite heavy. Although, if it''s an indoor ceremony/reception, it may not make a difference. Just tell the reception place to lower the AC!

Hi Cleo!

Well hello there Misysu

Long time no talk!

Would you like the look of the dress without sleeves? Because based on the picture, it looks like the sleeves would be very easy to have removed...

I agree with Misysu, on the sleeves and on the fabric. That thick satin is SOOOO hot, I know I was sweating in the stores just trying on dresses with that material. Also, that model definitely has a crinoline underneath the skirt to get the poufy effect. If you love that poufy effect you''ll need to wear the crinoline and those increase the heat under the skirt a thousandfold.

I say definitely get out there and try on some other dresses, there''s got to be some other ones you like out there!!

yes, the sleeves are actually detachable. I don''t like how I look in strapless dresses though. 3/4 length sleeves are so flattering on me. I''m getting good feedback here...but I so want this dress!!!

It would definitely be indoors!

What about cutting them off into cap sleeves? Just 2 little triangles across your shoulders?

It has one with the cap sleeves too.

whoops-just saw your post!!

Hmm...I''m just stuck on the original. Guess I will have to wait for March of 09 or find another dress for August 08!

I love love love this dress! I wish I could have tried it on, but I couln''t find it anywhere. Your dress choice definitely shouldn''t dictated your date, neither should your date dictate you dress! Of course the venue and formality of the wedding will. If you''re having an outdoor wedding, I do think this dress will be too hot. Otherwise, I say if you love it, get it!

Courtney I think your dress is gorgeous! Anchor said it so well, "Your dress choice definitely shouldn''t be dictated by your date, neither should your date dictate you dress!". You are only a bride once (well that is the goal at least haha) and you should be able to wear what you like.

My wedding is in March and it may be a bit chilly, but my dress is sleevless and I will probably have to wear a wrap. Just because my wedding is during cooler months doesn''t mean I automatically have to wear sleeves nor if its hot should you have to wear a strapless or sleeveless dress.

Also, if you are going to be indoors, you should be fine. I do not think the sleeves will look inappropriate for the weather. My only concern would be for you and being hot, but hey, who said beauty is painless!

You guys are so right! This is dress I fell in love with out of the 100''s I''ve looked at online. I will wear it no matter what season. I hope I can find this dress...I know it''s not brand new or anything. I''m sure I could order from Maggie right?

You can''t order directly from Maggie (Sottero? I assume) Call Pearl''s Place. Many girls here have bought their dresses from Pearl''s Place with exceptional reveiws of service and prices.

Just be sure you try on first! My dream dress looked awkward on me when i finally tried it on! You just never know!

First of all -- you''re getting married in Houston - in AUGUST!!! Everything short of a very light breezy dress will be hot. You''re not doing this outside are you? I absolutely would not wear this outside, in August, in Houston. I''m breaking a sweat just imagining what that would be like!

If you''re venue has great a/c, you will be fine. It''s not the sleeves that will be potentially hot on this dress -- it''s made out of some pretty heavy satin.

Someone else on PS had this dress for their wedding; she will be in the Show Me Your Gown thread.

My cousin wore a satin dress, and even had a very cold reception area inside, and she said her crotch felt like it was on fire and warned me. Try it on and walk around the bridal shop-- you'll get an idea of what it'll feel like in a temperatue-regulated building (excuse the language! hehe!).

If you're good being warmer, you may not even notice- then I'd say go for it! Buy I definitely wouldn't want you to be concentrating on your burning loins!

If it''s indoors then go for it. There''s nothing like temperature control.

And you''re right. People wear sleeveless in winter, so why not have sleeves in summer?

I too love this dress and if I ever had a reason to wear a wedding dress again this would be a huge contender. As long as you keep to the ac, I say wear whatever makes you feel like a bride.

One big thing you can do is to not wear layers and layer of crinoline. Get a hoop skirt. Its light, airy, and very cool. It was the second best thing I wore on my wedding day.

Great idea...thanks!!!!

I second the part about sleeves like this being hot. I have worn sleeves in a similar fabric, and they were HOT HOT HOT! I live in Atlanta, and know how hot, humid weather can feel. You may want to keep looking!

I don''t see how these particular sleeves would be hot, but I trust your opinion! I am still stuck on this dress so I will think about it. I will either have it in August of 08 with the AC cranked on or we will have in March of 09...don''t want to wait that long though! I will find the dress and try it on and go from there.

I wore a full satin gown with cap sleeves in September in Palm Springs. Is was about 102 that day, and we had an outdoor ceremony and indoor reception. I don''t remember being hot, but I know Houston is much more humid. When I was helping a friend look at Maggie dresses their taffeta fabric was really light and flowy, does the dress have the option for that fabric? It might help.

It looks like a possibility that we will get married in April 08 and have our honeymoon in August. Thing I could plan a small, simple wedding in 4 months? Yikes! It at least solves the "dress in August" problem. We shall see....we still wanted to wait until after the holidays to really discuss a wedding. Can''t help it though. I''ve found my new obsession.....PS!
