Edwardian and other 14K gold mountings for my precious stones.

I am a hobbist gem collector, I am very new to this hobby. I don''t know the difference between mounting and setting?
Nor do I know the difference between industrial diamonds or not?
I have been told that 14K yellow gold is best for mounting genuine coloured gemstones in, but is it?

I also would like to learn something about buying coloured gemstones. However I would like to know how one goes about getting their diamonds certified and the usual cost for each diamond.I think I would need this for reselling wouldn''t I. Lets just say, I am trying to gain some knowledge in this area and I happen to have some diamonds cut and polished. Ready for mounting. How would I sell them? Is this a situation where you meet with a gemologist and get them all appraised as a parcel. And hopefully trust the person whose doing the written apprasel.
