i have an emerald my husband brought back from colombia years ago. i like the setting, but it does nothing for the stone, so i was thinking about a reset, however, im wondering if the clarity of this stone makes it even worth resetting. i think i read emeralds usually have more inclusions that other stones, so what is the acceptable limit? its not crystal clear, its not total fog either. maybe its a personal choice. its about .75 ct. i was thinking about putting it in the WF shared prong legato in an east west position. i dont want to waste the money if its not worthy of the setting. i realy dont think i can get a good pic right now with total overcast. anyway, i never wear it now becasue i hate the setting, but i wish i could becase i do like the color a lot.

Hi there, I think if it is a pretty stone it is worth resetting. The only concern though is the risk of getting it re-set as emerald are not durable orhard and it may have a higher chance of chipping/cracking in the process. I would suggest that you consult with the jeweler whom you will pick to work with you..

hey there ss, thanks for responding! i guess ive seen better emeralds, but ive seen worse, sooooo, i dont know, its DEFINATELY better than mall quality, that is for sure. i did NOT know about the risk of chipping, so that is good to know, that will cause me to think about this more. i think ill just keep my eyes open and look at lots of pics to compare. i did not see very many emeralds in teh eye candy folder, ill have to arrange for sitter so i can get my rear out there and go to some better jewelery stores!

I would say if you like the color and it''s pretty it''s worth getting it set in something you like to wear. Definitely find someone you trust to work on it though.

I wish I can see the emerald. In any case, I agree with the others that emeralds are rather soft and tend towards more inclusions. There''s not just the concern with chipping during the setting process but also when worn as a ring. This is the reason why many people do not wear emeralds (other than the difficulty of finding fine quality emeralds) - they are prone to damage if not worn with proper care.

thank you marcyc,

and here chrono, some pics. just as described. small, cute color, but not like a crystal by any means. not htat i think about it, my appraiser did tell me years ago something about not wearing an emerald everyday due to strenght. and not to put it in soapy water? uh oh, its seen lots of soapy water. maybe i shouldnt bother.

Did the appraiser say whether it had been oiled? If so, that may be why he cautioned against soapy water. I believe emeralds can be re-oiled, which should improve their clarity, but you''ll still face the strength issue.

I think it looks really nice in the current setting. I wouldn''t reset it if it was me. I''d just start another project with a new stone!

harriet, i think he did say something about oiling. thanks for reminding me!

diamond seeker. im starting to think, since there is a strength issue, that maybe wearing it with the right sized diamond band may just be a better idea than having it reset. that would bring more sparkle and more options without risk. right now my bands are all too big or too small so id have to go shopping, but its a project to look forward to. thanks for your input!
