I have given Platinumsmith (Phillip) a new project. I had a pair of emerald earrings which although I loved, were not getting much wear lately as the setting was not suitable for everyday use.

After LOTS of discussion with Phillip, he is resetting them as in platinum. Progress photos are attached. I can’t wait to collect them!

Oh they are going to be beautiful!!! Well done platinumsmith!! The color of the emeralds is just gorgeous!!

Thanks Kaleigh
They are a very light green compared to most emeralds. I just love the colour (although I think this probably decreases their value) and oddly enough the inclusions don''t bother me at all!

so these are the earrings you are having reset

.... wow, what a nice size! they are going to look great!

As a bench jeweler I am very critic to the work done by others, of course most of the times I keep this opinios to myself because I have seen horrible works that are posted in forums as fantastic jobs but this is truly an excellent work, very clean, symetric and perfect in proportions.

The wide base of this earrings will prevent them to point down in the lobe of the ear, they will wear straigh up.

You can see the difference between a hand made job to a cast one, even in a simple work like this you can judge the excellent quality of the work.

Hi Belle
I have just come home from an interstate conference followed by the last fly fishing trip for the season. Just to keep you filled in with my adventures (and as you know I have had more than my fair share this year!), I had a nasty shock yesterday from an electric fence designed to keep cattle away. John was not very sympathetic, although he did come and rescue me when I just sat sobbing in the middle of a paddock. Good job there were no bulls around! I think I am due an uneventful stretch for a while.
Anyway, I am looking forward to collecting earrings tomorrow.

Hope you are well.

Hi Juan
Thankyou for taking the time to comment on a fellow jeweller’s work. Phillip has taken a lot of care with them and kept me posted with the progress, which has made the process very enjoyable. In one of his emails he wrote:

“The underbezel comes in 4 parts, not one. I am taking no chances with the setting. I have essentially made the setting with 4 U shapes and added the underbezel piece by piece at exact sizes to fit the already fitted stone. This takes a longer in, but it allows me to accurately lay the emerald onto the underbezel when it comes to setting. With a good seat, there will be very little to be done in bringing down the claws. I am also trying to make each earring slightly different to create the impression that they are closer to being the same size. It is a matter of conformity. It is slow going. Hope you don''t mind the wait.”

I am sure his ears are burning from your compliments. He will probably be sound asleep at the moment , as it is past midnight here in Australia.

oh angela! an electric fence?

i can only imagine how awful that would be....yikes. i''d be crying too!
39.gif
......as a matter of fact, i think i''d still be crying! i hope you are okay! you''ve definetly had enough adventures for awhile (is that going to stop you from more?

)....we''ll see!

Hi Gale, Researcher & Jennifer
Thanks for your replies.

I dashed into town to collect the earrings this afternoon – I just couldn’t wait until a day off! Phillip has done a fantastic job (sorry I can''t send them your way Researcher).

I love the side view of the baskets. The catch at the back is absolutely perfect too - not very obvious, but makes them very secure, which gives me peace of mind wearing them. They hang straight and swing beautifully when I move my head. They are also extremely comfortable – I could only wear the old setting for a few hours before my ears hurt (amazing what we put up with isn’t it!).

cheers--Sharon

Many thanks Belle, Kaleigh and Sharon. I will find it hard to get to sleep tonight!

I am not at all superstitious, but I received a letter this morning from a Buddhist monk I met in Sri Lanka recently and he finishes today''s letter with "may triple gems bless you". Such an odd thing for a monk to say. Hubby John said to buy a tatts ticket given the strange coincidence!! (my diamond and these 2 emeralds are the only significant pieces I own and today is the first time I have worn them together).

Hi Angela,

I read through this post felt guilty for not being too concerned about the hotwire incident. PS is making me more sensative
1.gif
. I just pictured the hotwires I am supposed to be helping put up when you told me. I thought of generations of cows that have survived through marking but getting through fences. It is true, most of them pulsate these days... Be careful

I am thinking you have accepted that you have three gems and don''t need another to match your beautiful ring and the (singular) earrings. Best of luck.

Thanks for the nice job!

Phillip

Hi Phil
John wasn''t too sympathetic either - at least he had the excuse of abandoning a poolful of rising trout to rescue me. He gave me a long lecture about how I had always been too blase about electric fences. Not what I needed to hear! Three days later I can still feel the horiozontal mark at the back of my leg - I guess I am a bit lighter and have a thinner hide than the cows it was designed for. Like Pavel''s dogs I am certainly well trained now, so I guess it works!

Anyway, on a more important topic, your earrings have passed all my tests so far with flying colours. They have had the "sleep overnight test" and the "jumper over the head test" and the "towel on my head after a shower test". They are brilliantly comfortable to wear and stay put very well. They will get lots of wear now and will give me heaps of pleasure. Many thanks.

Those are GORGEOUS! I love the earwire and the way they fasten at the bottom. And your tests are fabulous.

OH MY GOD! Those are my Dream Earrings!!!

Is it too much to ask for an ear shot?

Sorry, somehow missed that ear shot

At the risk of starting a riot, I have to say that I think those of us who love colored gemstones have far superior taste to those who love diamonds. I mean, geez, diamonds are all the same, clear, more clear, not so clear
27.gif
So now I''m gonna run for cover...........

I LOVE how these earrings hang from the ear. very simple and elegant. do you think this style and back is only appropriate for EC cut stones? i''m already lusting over an orange stone set the same way......

peace, movie zombie
