Hi I''m new here, I''m trying to find a good source to find emeralds and I found pricescope and thought you might know. My wife''s birthstone is emerald and I''d like to get her a nice one to put in a ring. I''m looking for the perfect green color emerald from colombia, any idea where to look?

thanks a ton!

Good luck in your search Paul. Just a few things to add:

1. Emeralds have to be worn with care - so please bear that in mind when you look at designs.
2. Only buy from a trusted Vendor and find out about any treatments that have been applied.

Ditto to LTP and LD. Do you have a budget or size in mind?

I was thinking $1000 is ok, 1 - 2 carats, strongly prefer and excellent color from colombia. Thanks for everyone''s help!

Paul, a top quality Colombian Emerald that you're describing, might be difficult to source within your budget. Especially if you look over 1ct. Zambian Emeralds are typically cheaper but a great colour specimen will still be expensive.

Just wanted to mention that you don''t have to insist on a particular source (location), unless you have symbolic reason to do so. Beautiful emeralds can come from many different locations, not just Colombia. Also, a specific location is no guarantee that you''ll get a wonderful stone (I''ve seen some from Colombia for which I''d never give any money).

Also, try to educate yourself as much as you can by typing something like "emerald buying guide" into a search engine, so that you know what to look for when it comes to emeralds. HERE is another good link to get you going.

P. S. I''m not sure 1k can get you a carat of the best possible color (medium-dark, slightly bluish green - like those Debra Messing wore at Golden globes this year - LINK), but I''m sure you''ll eventually find something great.

Thank you very everyone very much for your help!

I would agree with Mr. Ma re, I have never seen a nice emerald from Colombia for that price in the 1-2 ct range. but there are beautiful stones from other sources. I personally buy a stone for color and don''t worry about the region. If you find a beautiful stone from another location, you might be able to get more for your money.

Make sure you get a full disclosure on treatments.

Here is a stone that fits what you want, the prices isn''t even listed. On this web site, that means it is $$$$. But this stone appears eye clean and a great color, so it is going to get top dollar.

Hi Paul, this stone is a bit less than a carat but is in your budget, also has certificate. My Husband got my e-ring from there and is beautiful. I had never bought a color stone from there though.

Emerald

Good luck hunting for a stone.

BTW, for a stone worth a thousand dollars make sure you get a certificate of a good gemological laboratory.

A couple of considerations:
1. Please be aware that emeralds are not everyday wear rings as they are unable to take that stress.
2. Define perfect green colour – pure green? Green with a hint of blue? Light tone? Medium dark?
3. Treatment? I presume that you are fine with the accepted practice of oiling. What about fracture filling?
I’m afraid that $1000 for a 1 ct emerald is going to be difficult and unlikely to be Columbian. I suggest that you look for the best colour that you can get, regardless of origin. Columbia has great quality emeralds and also really bad ones. Just because it comes for a certain area does not automatically qualify it as being a great stone. Another consideration is tsavorite garnet. It has a similar colour, is much cleaner and can be worn more often with the plus of costing a fraction of an emerald. The only downside is that it doesn’t have the same “satiny” appearance of an emerald.

Thank you everyone very much for your help. Gaby06 the stone is great I just need something a little larger.... that gives me hope that I can find something.

I am aware they are fragile, but it''s my wife''s birthstone, and a very pretty stone at that, so that''s what I''d like to find.;'')
