I have the opportunity to buy this lovely indicolite for $30. It''s 1/2 ct and 4.45mm square (perfect size for stacking with the rings I have in production). The seller says that the color is very good and describes it as "small but fine." Looks like a version of an opposed bar cut. What do you think? I''m tempted by what I think is a really low price...is it? Should I go for it?

Another pic...

Was treatment disclosed? It looks pretty. I paid about that for my 4.5 mm ACS green tourmaline.

I''d do it up.

Good question - I didn''t even think to ask. Are tourmalines commonly treated? I don''t really know much about them.

The seller is pretty reputable around here, just trying not to disclose right now since I don''t want someone to buy the stone out from under me.

Thanks Freke - you enabler, you! BTW, the blue zircon is in the capable hands of Julia Kay Taylor, and the garnet and spinel are on their way to Sally right now!

At that price, I would almost just get it than ask questions. That is what I did when mine came up :-). Assuming there is a reasonable return policy.

Oh and yes, many tourmalines are heated, which I think is fine. I have seen tourmalines with more aggressive treatment, and I usually avoid those stones. .

Most definitely! I''d buy it, very cute stone!

Thanks ladies! There is a 10-day return policy; I''d just be out the cost of shipping.

I think I''d definitely like to know a few more details about the cut before I commit, since it''s kinda hard to tell from the pics. But I''ve sent an email to the seller, so hopefully that will "reserve" the stone for me.

Awesome! What is Julia going to do to the zircon? I wonder if she recognizes it from pictures of stones I sent her for the wedding necklace I was considering...

If she did, she didn''t let on. She seems to really like it though! I''m going to set it E/W, bezeled of course, but the details are still up in the air. Probably something like the bottom design here:

...although as I noted in that thread, when she received the stone on Monday, she was so impressed with it that she decided to rethink the design and come up with something that would "present" the stone more. She''s extremely busy with other projects right now, so I haven''t seen any more sketches yet, but I''m really eager to see what she comes up with.

do it! love the color!

Oh wow. Jstar--that is gorgeous! I''m glad she likes it. I really need to get her to do something for me....

I love that design! Julia is working on two projects for me as we speak.....

Looks good! IMO for 30 bucks its worth getting it.

Can’t go wrong for $30, I guess.

I would go for it. In fact, I have nearly gone for it several times (but shipping it out here is too expensive for just that one stone).

Yeah, go for it, that''s too good a price to pass up.

Those sketches are gorgeous, btw. The more of Julia''s work I see, the more I love her!

Hehe, you guys are great enablers. I just emailed the seller again to ask about treatments. I'll probably get it either way though.

Loriken, I know about the key, but what else are you getting from Julia?

Freke and others...definitely get something from Julia! She puts so much thought into her work. She hasn't even started making mine yet and I'm already impressed. Her prices seem pretty reasonable too.

ETA: Wow, that was quick! He doesn't know of any treatment of this particular stone and also went on to say that indicolites are usually not treated, and quoted "the only treatments that I know of for tourmaline are radiation for reds and heat for greens and paraiba blues." Now that I've secured it, I can give away the seller: Michael of Gemshoppe.com, the same person who sold MTG her new blue tourmaline. There's still a lot of great stuff up on his site for 50% off of what's listed!

I would snatch it up..

I would snatch it up..

And I did! Should be here by Friday. Now to think of setting ideas...

ETA: Oh, found out a little more about the cut. It's basically a variation of a carre cut, with 2 opposite sides of the pavilion step-cut in the usual fashion, and the other 2 opposing sides left as single triangular facets. Cool!

LOL..like some peer pressure.."come on everyones getting them..come on..everyones doing it"...LOL..glad you got it

Yup, I caved under the pressure! There are worse things one can be coerced into doing though.

As for settings...naturally I''m thinking of sending it to Sally to match my other ~4.5 mm stackers. Sally''s designs are very distinctive, and I''m not sure if I''ll be happy with the way they match if I go with someone else. These stackers I mention include the alex lotus that I currently have and the 2 rings that are about to be made for my barion cut spinel and round garnet. I would love to mix and match this stone with them, probably wearing 2-3 at a time. Anyway, I''m thinking a little bit about these settings:

Christie setting

Pillbox setting - would of course have to be modified for a square, but that shouldn''t be a problem.

The major difference between these settings is the prong vs. bezel option. Do you think this stone would darken in a bezel, even a filigree bezel like the Pillbox? Any ideas on which one I should choose?

fantastic! I'm so glad you got it! its a great looking stone! yay!

Ok, I feel like a complete moron here, but when I go to Michael''s website, I''m not seeing much in the way of gems. There''s like 2 sapphires, and one diamond, and about 8 rings already done up. Where are all these other stones you''re talking about? Where are these 50% pieces?

AustenNut, for some reason Michael''s stones aren''t posted on his website, but instead on a different forum that we''re not allowed to link to. Email Michael for the link! There are some great deals.

I''m glad you got the stone. But I go to that LINK on his website and I don''t see your stone! Why is that? Am I missing another site with many more stones to pick from? AHHH I''m afraid I''m missing out on stones.

I think I found the gems. At least I saw them that were done by Michael E. It certainly wasn''t obvious, so thanks for the clues!

Stone Hunter, my stone is no longer listed in his store because it was sold to me. I think it went to a feedback page or something. Currently I see 15 stones that he has available, starting with a fire opal in the upper left corner. If that''s what you''re seeing, you''re at the right place.

No problem, AustenNut.

And to both of you, please keep in mind that he has a 50% off sale right now, and the list prices are actually double what you''d be paying. So the fire opal for example is $150. Go nuts!

Glad you got it, I was concerned someone else would get it. Can''t wait to hear about what you think of it once you see it in person.
