My mother''s best friend has very nicely offered to throw me an engagement party for FI and I, our immediate families and our bridal party members as an engagement/getting to know each other that you''ll be dealing with alot in teh near future party haha. Is it ok to have the engagement party be just for bridal party members, and not extended out to all my and FI''s friends? I really want to keep it small since we are not paying for it, so I never asked if I could invite more people (although my all my closest friends are in the bridal party).

I think its a great idea.

My MIL had a big engagement party for us with tons of people and most of them weren''t even invited to the wedding. She said she told everyone that we were having a small wedding, it made feel uncomfortable, but fortunately no one made any comments.

I don''t see a problem with it either. How nice of her to offer!

I guess that''s a good point--I sometimes feel guilty for not inviting our other friends, but I wouldn''t want it to be too large anyways, esp if it''s not on my tab.

small=intimate. intimate=good. go for it!

If you feel uncomfortable talking about an "engagement party" around friends that may not be invited, maybe just refer to it as a "pre-wedding get-together" or something similar? You can explain it to anyone else exactly how you explained it to us: a chance for your bridal party and families to get to know each other. Sounds like fun... enjoy it and no guilt over the guest list!!
