Everything I am reading about weddings mentions having the wedding bands engraved. What kinds of stuff do people normally have inscribed? Wedding date, names, a joke?

We don''t think we''re going to get our bands engraved (our mutual decision). We just didn''t see the need.

Anybody have any insights on the topic? Are we missing the point or something?

Thanks.

I think we''re just going to have our initials and wedding date - "LFA & JXZ - June 23, 2007", but I know some people also write a little message to each other, or a line from their favorite song/poem or something. I don''t think it''s necessary, but having recently inherited a couple of pieces from the 1800s, I''ve got to say it is cool for future generations to know exactly how old that ring is and who it belonged to! And just for the two of us too, I like knowing it''s a little bit personalized, not just exactly the way it was made for a million other people. That said, I think that a lot of people LIKE the idea of engraving, but I still bet the majority don''t have theirs engraved, and it is certainly not required! Do whatever you want!

A lot of people either put their initials and their wedding date or a meaningful word or phrase. I think it just adds even more sentimentality to it. I''m getting "My Only One" engraved on my future husband''s band because "Only One" by Yellowcard was the first song we ever listened to together and had our first kiss while listening to it. If there''s enough room, I''m going to put the date on it, too.

I don''t think you are missing a point. Some people do it some people don''t. I was thinking of having our wedding date engraved on my FI''s w-band simply so he doesn''t forget the date.

That''s a good idea! Maybe I should reconsider on this alone! I''ve been known to forget critical dates before.

We''re thinking about it. We may just have the date engraved since the bands we''re looking at say "Mo Anam Cara" on them, which is Gaelic for My Soul Mate. Don''t need to say more than that.

A couple of things, I love the idea, and I think we''ll do it, too. Just what to put, I dunno. Maybe the date, or maybe a little phrase, I was thinking "One Sweet Whirld" which was the Jamba Juice motto (how we met).

Albi, would your band have room for engraving? Isn''t it skiiiiny?

Caribou, I remember an "I Love Lucy" episode where it''s their anniversary while they''re in L.A., and Ricky can''t remember the exact date, so he checked in his band, and Lucy saw and said, "Our anniversary isn''t engraved in the band, Ricky." or something like that. I thought that was so funny.

Also, where would you get the bands engraved?

I came across this ring a while ago and loved it.

We put our wedding date 05-20-06 as well as our saying "We are tight". He cried when he saw that I inscribed that in his band. We believe that there are two types of people in this world...the "tight" ones and the "lost" ones. If you have to ask what it means...then you aren''t tight!

Soulsis, I like that sentiment. It''s lovely.

Hehe, I am a little concerned about that! But what I was thinking is that I might have it done on the SIDE of the band, because the vertical wall seems to be maybe 2.5 mm whereas the width is only like 1.5. Not sure if people can engrave on the sides or not...but it also seems kind of fun to be able to see the engraving while you''re wearing it! Or if I don''t want to I can always turn that side towards my engagement ring and just see the bare metal. Still not sure if anyone can do that though...or where I''d get it done....

Thanks AW! None of our families thought it was cute.

That''s what I worry about, too. My band will probably be about 2mm.. Not too thin or thick. Also, you can engrave tungsten, right? For my fiance, not me!

We had ours engraved with our names and wedding date . . . and a little goofy "internet nerd" thing - a kiss smiley.

You can clearly see it, even on my 2 mm wide wedding band.

They read: "Lauren & Weston 3-9-06 :-*"

We're dorks.

Lauren, it''s not like you have pi on your bands!! I think it''s cute what you have!

Hehe, yeah Lauren, my friends have "143" ("I love you" in pager-talk) engraved on their rings because when they first met they used to page each other all the time, and they gave out rubik''s cubes for their favors! So you''re pretty undorky I think!

Hehe, but theirs was cute too and it''s just nice when people have a little personal touch!

We got ours engraved for our first anniversary, not because it was romantic or anything, but rather because we couldn''t get our act together in time before our wedding.

I actually have my engagement ring engraved with the whole saying plus date, while my wedding ring could only fit our date. We used the last line of our (Catholic) vows, so mine says "I will love you and honor you..." and his says "...all the days of my life." The funny thing is that when we went to Quest to get them engraved, I wrote down exactly what we wanted, and then when they had the rings in their workshop, I realized that I had written down the wrong date!

Luckily, they hadn''t started engraving. I never would''ve lived that one down.

SDL, how in heck did you fit all of that?? Still, I love the notebook, and you''ve given me an idea to look inside it!! Logan, that''s hilarious about the changed date... My fiance would have killed me with that for years. You got lucky!!

That is so cute!

If you think thats bad, my wonderfully dorky fiance wants to get a Star Wars quote on my ring.

Wow, SDl, where is this place? What''s the width of his band? I remember seeing it on SMTR, but refresh my memory, please!

XChick, at least it''s not Star Trek!!

I always thought my parents engravings were sweet.
Their rings say "RLD loves DMM 6-20-1970", and the reverse.

I have a good friend (male) whose wedding ring is engraved "My love my life"
It's just the sweetest most romantic sentiment. I'm not sure if his wife's says the same thing.
I always wondered if she surprised him with it. What a nice surprise an engraving like that would be.

Scintillating...

Everyone''s engravings are SO sweet and romantic!

I''m definitely going to have something put on FI''s band, and hopefully on mine too if it''s not too skinny. Not sure exactly what though...

Lauren- do you happen to have any pics of your engraving? I''d love to see what it looks like on a thin band...

albi- I might steal your briliant idea of engraving on the side that faces the e-ring! I''m definitely going to look into that.

Where do you get the engraving done? A regular jeweler?

DH''s band has engraving - our names and wedding date. Mine was so thin that it''s not engraved.

I was going to get DH''s wedding band engraved with the words:

PUT IT BACK ON!

j/k. We just put our initials and wedding date in ours. I felt it added some sentimentality and also history to our rings.

Hee hee... that''s fantastic!

I hadn''t seen this thread since I posted yesterday, and you guys have me giggling in my office. My colleagues think I''m nuts.

Lizzie, I''ll try and dig up pictures of what mine looks like . . .

You can sorta see my engraving, it goes about halfway around the ring . . .
