Hi everyone! I am a long time lurker on this forum, but i finally decided to register since i have a question that i cannot answer. I am in the process of creating an engagement ring for my girlfriend, and she wants a pink stone. Of course i cannot afford a pink diamond, so i am looking for alternatives. I''ve been looking at spinel, sapphires, kunzite, and morganite. The color pink that i am looking for is a very very light pink...... almost white, but with a hint of pink in it. I''m going to have to get the stone recut as she wants an asscher cut, and i would prefer a finished size of about 7.0mm Any help, ideas, or directions that you could point me in would be most helpful.

You came to the right place! Good luck to you. I am not much of an expert but I have seen some gorgeous pink spinel on this site courtesy of Chrono.....

Happy Shopping!

Here is the linky to Chrono''s recut. Colour Me Pink . I think it looks fantastic; I think she is now deciding on a mounting. There are pics of it on page 2. Hope that helps!

I have a light pink sapphire as my center stone with two side diamonds. I some lights the stone looks like a diamond. The ring is from the natural sapphire company in New york.

I have seen Chrono''s post, and it was sort of helpful...... it at the very least let me see what a pink stone that was asscher cut actually looks like. I also contacted Jeff at White''s Gems, but he didn''t have anything that i was looking for. Of all the stones that i mentioned in my first post it seems that i can easilly find a Kunzite that matches the very light pink color that i am searching for. The only problem with that is that hardness of the stone... So that''s why i came to you fine people in hopes that one of you might be able to point me toward some place that may have a stone like i am looking for.

Would you seriously think about getting that stone and having it recut?? I am fascinated by the whole recutting process...

I would absolutely have it recut.... If it was my stone i would keep it as is since i can appreciate different cuts, but my girlfriend likes the square cuts best, and the ring is for her, so it only makes sense to have it recut.

The stone you have been looking at is beautiful! You should try to find out how important the cut really is to your girlfriend. I too have fallen in love with the Asscher cut how ever I believe the cushion cut is gorgeous and you wouldn’t have to sacrifice weight or pay more for less stone. I would also ask NSC if they can show you other stones maybe you will have luck finding a stone that does not need to be re-cut.

I’ve used NSC before and when I told them exactly what I was looking for they found it. If only I could find a car dealership that was this helpful!

Don''t get kunzite for an engagement ring...the color will fade in time when exposed to sunlight. Wouldn''t want that to happen...

Yes, ditto FG! The kunzite will fade into a colourless stone. I''ll stick with a pale pink spinel or sapphire (for hardness and durability). If you are looking for something around 2ct and 7mm (final size after recut), you probably have to looking for a stone that''s about 2.5ct to start with as there will be some weight and size loss, especially with an asscher cut. The stone must have enough depth to begin with.

If you love that cushion cut sapphire but don''t want to bother getting it recut, I would call Steve at NSC and just ask. He very well might be able to source something directly for you so you don''t ahve to deal with recutting.

How much depth do you think a stone would need for an asscher cut??

I'm not a cutter so I'm not 100% sure but I believe you'll need a depth of close to 5.0 mm
I've seen stones about 7mm that has a depth of just under 5.0mm (4.9mm) and stones about 8mm with a depth of 5.4mm
Note that this may vary according to how the cutter cuts them but I think my estimate should be pretty close.
