Hi Everyone,

A bit of a backstory is that I want to make a fish pendant for my nephew (also a September baby). I cannot for the life of me find a faceted fish (no shock there) & the kite shapes I'm finding are incredibly overpriced for inclusion loaded pieces. Same for salt & pepper diamonds. :nono: A elongated kite shape would look great & mimic the body of the fish. I guess since they are the rage now, the prices are high. This stone is quite shallow, dimensions are 8.1 x 6.1 x 3.2. I was thinking of doing a back plate with engraved scales to give it some dimension, reduce some light & close up the window a bit. Do you think this might work? I don't want to put too much into the stone. This stone is $350. I did talk to a cutter who could do a diamond like rose cut pavilion but the charge was $200 + another $50 for shipping. For $600 I could get a high colour, well cut lab marquise diamond to be honest. I think for my nephew, a sapphire would be nicer. I could also do a lab cut sapphire too I suppose but the places I'm looking at, prices are high.

If the link doesn't work, I'll try posting pictures. It's from Viddiegems on IG.

Thanks,
Judy

Hi Chrono,
Thank you for the info. I always forget about Sally!
I had reached out to Jerry Newman who just responded & said he could recut & would drop to a size of 7 x 4.5 ish. The practical side in me is saying do it as in future if he wanted to repurpose the gem, he could without limitations. But the size person in me is thinking leave it alone. Has a small table & minimal window. Since it will be stationary in a pendant, I don’t think the tilt window would be so noticeable.

Yes, I would not recut for a pendant. In terms of colour, seems to have quite a bit of darkness, possibly extinction.

Have you typed in "kite gemstones" into your internet browser? Out of curiosity I did and found loads (some from our trusted vendors).

Chrono, thank you once again. Jerry mentioned the stone itself would not look very fish like. LOL He is such an honest guy. Super nice. I'm going to pass on this stone.

LD, I have actually reached out to some. Prices are pretty high even when I requested included stones. I'll have another go at it. :-) Thank you..

The stone is not windowed, but there is a tilt window. All stones have them, but the shallower the cut, the more of a tilt window, as the face up spread is larger. Nice color though it seems, for a teal sapphire.

AfricaGems has marquise sapphires (both mined and Chatham lab-created) sapphires in a variety of calibrated sizes:

Have you already seen these two sapphires -- priced at $340 and $501 from a Thai dealer on etsy. Don't know anything about the vendor, but these are the most fish-y sapphires I'm seeing this afternoon.:

fredflinstone, I agree, is a nice colour. It might be a tad too round. :-/

Molly, thank you for the ThaiGemsCo. I didn't know about him. He sure does have a lot to go through. I had thought of a marquise or a slender pear but the tips are always so black. I did find some Tourmaline options though if I want to branch out to a different gem. :-)

I remember I've done this drawing for someone looking to utilize smaller melee. You could form the fish out of gold, or form a melee mosaic like this.IMG_20190909_132220262.jpg
