Beautiful colour, not so beautiful cut (dead area in the middle).

Interesting shape and the colour is unreal. I've been on the hunt for an untreated sapphire of this colour (cushion shape though!) and I can tell you at this size, its very difficult to find. If this is the shape and colour you want and are OK with the cut, I don't think the price is too bad.

Side bar: are you in Toronto? Where are you planning to have it set?

Hi, it seems they have a “Labor Day special” and the price is reduced to $14,000 odd.
As others have said, it’s not easy to find a decent size, untreated sapphire with good colour. I’m not fussed on the cut, bit dead in the centre and dark at the tip and seems a bit thin and pointy to me, but that’s my taste.

I’m a bit lazy to trace but do make sure it comes with GIA lab memo, not in-house or some other due to a conflict of interest and reputation.

Get a natural non enhanced photo on the back of a hand so we can see the real colour and how bad the window in the centre is. Sometimes the colour can negate the window. And sometimes photos like these do not accurately represent the colour of the stones people have for sale.

@bluejays554 If you are not particularly set on the shape of that unheated pear, here is a heated oval with superior color at an excellent value on sale:

I think that in that size unheated, you really have to compromise on the shape, color, cut, or some combination of the above. When I was completely new to buying gemstones I went for unheated stones, but sometimes the best color is really in heated sapphires.

Really helpful thanks to all - it does look a bit pointy - may pivot back to a similar stone with James Allen - thanks again!

Also - just a Jays fan, not in Toronto - will probably have it set right with James Allen vs. buying the stone and finding a local jeweler to finish the job.

Who ever you purchase the stone from get them to make a video or take photos of the stone on the back of a hand in natural lighting and if possible a range of lighting situations so you can get an indication of real colour rather than something from stock or photoshopped images.

window and artificial, photoshop-smelly color. For over well 10.000 you should not have major flaws to stomach.

Many pear shaped blue sapphires are dark at the tip, and with some that darkness extends 1/3rd the way up the stone! They can be found without it, but those pears are very rare and very special.
