I just read about The Hope Diamond today, which I beleive is the largest natural blue diamond, and belongs to the Smithsonian Institute. It''s amazing how many hands it passed through. What are some other famous gemstones?

here's my fave: the graff cushion cut! 11.89 carat D/IF. /idealbb/images/smilies/love.gif

here's the Hope. 45.52 carat. PS: WHY did it take me three months to figure out that i can simply PASTE a picture into my post in RichText (instead of copy, open paint, paste, save as JPG, close, upload, etc.)? I am very excited about this discovery!

I read a great book about the Hope called Hope: Adventures of a Diamond. It was fascinating.

Look here (LINK) there is a good afternoon of random reading on the very topic

This is a sincere hobbyist site - as far as I see, not to be taken for granted as is, but quite a bit of sleuthing put together.

When I lived in DC I loved browsing thorugh the Smithsonian at all of the lovely jeweled treasures it holds. I recommend an afternoon there to all jewel lovers if they have a chance.

Once saw this there, it was AMAZING.

What a spread, eh?

I had the opportunity to visit the national gem collection recently and I highly recommend making the trip to anyone with a serious interest in gemology. And especially for gemology students. It's a FABULOUS exhibit !

Yes, good place to encourage the acceleration of shrinkage. Also good place to see GFs, wives, etc poke their SO "are you paying attention/ take notes/ see" or other variations of that

Reena, someday I want to be just like you and learn how to do this too! I saw the thread where you made this discovery and I confess it was a little over my head.

I didn't have the staying power to absorbe it. Someday soon I will return to "normal," whatever that is.
