I posted before about trying to find a special gem for my mom as a present to give to her at my wedding next month. Well, Jeff White brought back some fanta-orange spessartite from Tucson and it looks like I''m going to get a piece cut.

Do you folks know: is all bright fanta orange spess from Namibia? Does country of origin affect the price? Or only colour (and clarity and size of course).

How exciting! Are you going to set it?

Well, I''m thinking I might leave it loose. For one thing, I''m not 100% sure how mom would choose to set it. She doesn''t have much jewelry so it''s hard to guess what she''d want (an RHR? A necklace?). For another thing, the money I had originally set aside to BUY the gem now has to go to fix my heating system which, sadly, conked out yesterday. Whoops! So I''m feeling kinda broke.

So I figure I''ll let her choose how to set it, and then I''ll take care of it next time I''m visiting her, and once I''ve saved up some extra dosh.

Most rough now is from Tanzania. If old material it is ussually from Nigeria. Namibian stones are ussually included and very small. Country of origin doesn''t matter if the stone is beautiful and has no brown under tone.

Regards,
Maurice

I have a Namibian spess that Richard Homer cut and I LOVE it. It''s a pumpkin orange color -- not Fanta -- but I think your mom will love her stone. If Jeff is cutting it, it will be gorgeous.

Actually, I think the Fanta-colored stones from Namibia are highly sought after.

Mine is kind of big -- 3.65 carats -- and it does have some inclusions. Still, it is a gorgeous stone... I''ll attach a pic!

IG, I am sure you mom will love to be able to pick out its home. Sorry to hear about your heat going out. Those kind of things are so annoying!

I recently acquired (and have been cutting) a very nice parcel of sess from Nigeria. The parcel itself has a range of colors that go from a nice burnt orange to fine madarin to juicy fanta.

There are several sources for the yummy spess that is on the market right now. I don''t think origin really impacts the price. When it comes to spess, color is king.
