So after having my diamond since november 2012, I held on tight to it and changed my mind on how I wanted it set about a dozen times. I went from wanting a Tacori setting, to a super ornate Neil Lane type, to a Victor Canera Emilya pink diamond halo. My wedding is this September so it was really crunch time at this point to choose a setting and get it done (and a wedding band!). However, the more I looked at rings in person, the more I realized how much I was drawn to the simple solitaires. Something about the sparkle of the center stone next to the shine of the platinum band, an understated elegance showcasing the diamond in all its beauty and simplicity without any distractions really spoke to me.
So after another few weeks lurking through so many photos trying to decide what kind of solitaire I wanted, I found the Gabriella setting by Victor Canera, which was the closest to what I was looking for, with just a few tweaks.
I had both rings done at Aspen Diamond in Montreal and couldn't be happier. After my first visit, I had posted a diamond from their inventory on Rocky Talky asking if I should switch my diamond. Everyone strongly encouraged me to do so and after thinking about it for a few days, I had decided to go for it but at the last second I backed out and decided to just keep mine. I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I guess I've grown a sentimental attachment to it even though it does not meet PS's standards of excellence in terms of cut.
So, onto the rings! I worked with Sev and his father, who made my rings, and they are just such nice people. They did exactly what I wanted and I'm in love with the rings. I asked for the design of the Gabriella setting but with an ever so slight taper, so the band is 2.0 mm tapering to 1.9 mm towards the stone. I also asked for a very slight cathedral effect like that of the classic Tiffany setting. Our birthstones were placed inside as well (September and March). The center stone is a 2.00 carat F VS2 with no fluorescence. The size is the ring is 5.5 but I am closer to 5.25 (the 5.25 makes me feel a little claustrophobic). It was made using 90% plat. 10% iridium.
I also had the wedding band made at the same time. I wanted a U-prong full eternity that would be as close to the width of the shank of the engagement ring as possible without having to go for pavé. So we went with 5 pointers (so width of ring is about 2.3 mm), all F/G VS diamonds set in platinum, size 5.5.
Through my custom setting search, I had a hard time finding any info on vendors in my area for custom platinum jewelry, let alone reviews and real life photos of work created, so I want to go ahead and highly recommend Sev and his father at Aspen Diamond for anyone looking in the area (they are located in our small diamond district). Especially for fellow Canadians, I know I was very apprehensive about shipping my diamond to the US and having to deal with duties and other added expenses. They are sincere, nice people and I would definitely work with them again for future projects.
And here are some (ok more like a ton of) photos!
