Hello everyone. This is my first post. I have been engaged for almost 4 years. We have finally decided to tie the knot next May on our 10 year anniversary. When would be a good time to start looking for a dress? I want to lose at least 20 lbs before the wedding. So I don''t want to get a dress too soon and then pay all this money for alterations. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would start looking 9 months out, personally.

Nope, I tried to get my daughter to join but she said she was already on another board and that I was "Already Representin''"!!

But it was a Gypsy post that got my beloved assistant hooked!!

i think it really depends on what your schedule is like. if you can only shop during the weekends, start now. if you have more flexible schedule (have time during the day on weekdays), you can wait couple more months before you start.

for me, it was easier to look for a dress once i had the venue/ time of the wedding & reception set. also, take advantage of the sample sale/ trunk sales that are going on right now. it seems like a lot of the sales are there once a year. thus, the more time you have the better off you are. besides, you can lose weight once the dress has been ordered since it takes time to find a dress and wait for it to arrive after it''s been ordered.

anyway, good luck! i''m still looking for a dress and my wedding''s in september. i wish i had more time (or started my search in january).

I would start trying things on now just to get a feel for what type of styles you like. Then order a dress about 9 months out. Its not too early but still gives you wiggle room in case there''s a delay with the dress srrival.

The most important thing to know if you are planning to lose weight for the wedding is to order the size that you fit at the time the order is placed. In other words, DO NOT ORDER A SMALLER SIZE TO MOTIVATE YOURSELF. You can always make a dress smaller but you can''t make it bigger. One of my friends ordered a dress that''s way too small for her. She said she has to lose 5 INCHES FROM HER WAIST to fit it. The dress arrives in July and the wedding is in August. I didn''t know she was doing this otherwise I would have said something. Now that the deed is done I''m keeping my mouth shut.

Oh, and we''re talking about losing 5 inches starting now, 5 months away from the wedding. I feel like that''s way too much weight in too little time. If she doesn''t meet her goal then I have no idea what will happen with the dress.

I''m getting married June 09 and I''m starting to dress shop the end of August this year. I''m also losing weight at the moment so I want to get as much lost by then before I dress shop.

Welcome to the board museikchik!!!

I''m pretty much doing the same thing you are and will probably order my dress 9 months out. I''m trying to find a corset back I like just in case (makes it a little easier if you lose an extra inch or two).

I just wanted to thank all of you for your advice. I can''t wait to start looking for my dress. I can''t believe you totally called me out, miraclesrule!
