STRUGGLING WITH THE ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITY ISSUES RELATING TO THIS, BUT HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS.

1. Are there are any portable devices that can reliably detect diamonds in consumer packaging?
2. Is this likely a by-product of a smuggling attempt or method?
3. Who are the "proper authorities" if I were to report this?

Seriously? Wow. If that happened to me, I''m sure I would have been groggy enough to grind them up in my coffee grinder.

Sorry - no answers to your questions.

don''t you know... diamonds grow on coffee trees?

heheh... The clatter woke me up (and seriously damaged the blades on my grinder)... Thanks for replying

So David...um....where do you buy your coffee? I''m getting low and should probably pick up 20 or 30 pounds.

Seriously though, I''ve heard of drugs being smuggled through customs packed in coffee (the smell confuses the dogs), but not diamonds. I guess anything''s possible!

Wow... very interesting. It''s totally possible this was a result of some smuggling activity. I would report it to U.S. Customs (assuming you are in the U.S.) and or the U.S.F.D.A. (there''s also a food safety issue here.)

There''s also a number listed on their site: 1- 877-CBP -5511

Good luck, and if you report, let us know what they say!

I would sue the supplier of the beans, for damaging your grinder and for emotional damages related to the impossibility of calmly drinking your coffee from now on, and the stress connected to you being the subject of a search by some violent international gang, looking for their valuables.

Live long,

I forgot to add.

If you pay for the travel and expenses (and for my hours of course), I am happy to come and check the diamonds and testify in court that they can truly ruin your grinder and your ease of mind.

Live long,

Thanks Sparklish... I will communicate results here.

Hehehe Paul. You will no doubt be the expert of choice in my hour of need.

i think your questions have been answered.....
i just have to say...

Oh my! I didn''t know there were such things as diamond smugglers!!! Anyone know of a good Ethan Allen furniture smuggler?

Are you sure that these are diamonds? Have they been checked out by a gemologist.

It could be that they are only pieces of quartz or some other material that occurs in coffee country. Then it becomes an issue of natural byproducts in your coffee.

The last baseball game I went to had a bag of peanuts with one nut accounting for most of the weight.. I did not analyze the item for exact composition - and got off calling it a "rock", lightly salted and roasted...
