Fragrance of the Day Thread

Does that matter? After I confessed here to having thrown out bottles and bottles of old Shalimar and Moschino and similar perfumes, I was made to feel I had committed a crime, because they were still good!

Lol, I guess I have always heard that it goes bad. I don't really know!! Confession too that I like to think my perfume came from Neimans instead of Walgreens!!!:shhh:

I wish all of mine could come from the VA, which has the best price, but they do not have enough variety to supply my tastes!

What is the VA? Veterans Admin? :lol-2:
Seriously, I don't know what VA is.

Yah its pretty rare for a perfume to go "bad" these days you'd have to really abuse them. Some are inherently unstable for whatever reason, and they go off if you look at them wrong.

Perfumes these days undergo reformulation about every 3-5 years because of IFRA rules. that also means that a perfume you might have worn for 20 years might not smell the same as you remembered.

I don't mind discounters. I rather like some of the older formulas for the above reasons.

Oh and fwiw, I have a 1930's version of Caron Fleur de Rocaille. Its amazing......:kiss2: I also have some 1960's - 70's versions of different perfumes as well. A perfume thats stored well (not in a bathroom, away from direct heat and sunlight) will last extremly long time depending on how its made.

A perfume thats gone bad smells like stewed celery, or cardboard, or, dog puke. And scents can fade badly in the case of citrus heavy fumes. Perfumes can also lose their top notes but keep the mid and base notes (top notes especially citrus are notorious for fading fast.)

I guess for me I don't care. I always use the trust but verify when I shop with a discounter. but I draw the line with (most) Chanels. they have a very tight distribution and are very easily faked. The exception buying from a perfumista that is downsizing. I've scooped up a 1980's version of Coco for roughly 40 dollars. Oh man the new stuff does NOT compare!!:kiss2:

Today I'm wearing Marc Jacobs Pear Splash. Got it at TJMaxx for under 20 bucks.

Sorry. Yes, the Veterans Administration! I have been going up to the one in New Haven, Connecticut with a friend of mine fairly regularly because he gets all his medical care there and, truth be told, he gets a lot of medical care!

There is a "Patriot Shop" where the prices are low and there is no tax. They have some great colognes and perfumes, but not a huge variety. There are definitely female veterans there, but the vast majority of patients are men. I know that a lot of the male veterans buy the women's scents for the women in their lives, and I think that they probably do not get too experimental with women's scents!

@Arcadian thanks for this great info! I looked at a few sites for perfume and can find a lot of my favorites for less. I just have always been leery of discounted fragrance. Will definitely try it now.

@AGBF oh wow, you really meant the VA. That is hilarious because I found an online fragrance shop called perfumeva.com!

Yeah some are perfectly legit. Some will sell fakes so you do have to be careful. And if purchasing from amazon, buy from amazon proper. there are some legit perfume boutiques who also sell on amazon and even ebay, but you'd have to know who they were and all (and many of them sell your harder to find niche brands)

Speaking of hard to find, today I'm wearing Prada No7. (for those who know the numbers, its Violette) They never made an infusion out of this one and I've often wondered why? But its very hard to find, who knows if its even in production anymore.

Its really nice, fresh powdery violets, a sueded leather, and freshly bitter bite of galbanum. of course the ever present powdered iris is there as its the Prada signature. Since I don't do special occasion perfumes, I wear this when I run up on the bottle (yeah kinda embarrassing:oops:) But I also treasure it because its so hard to find.

I do not know Walgreen's well, but Walmart is one of my favorite stores on earth. The Faded Glory long sleeve shirts are a staple of my wardbrobe. Although I went into my local store early this season to be sure I was in time to get the "small" size of any color I liked (they go very fast), I still wound up going to two Walmart stores. My daughter always thinks I am wearing a designer top when I wear one. I also wear one of their camisoles without the built in bra ($1.99 on sale) with every burnout or lace or other sheer top I have. I think that looking elegant (and smelling good) is a matter of taste to some extent. If one is very poor, of course, one has no choice but to buy what one can get. I have the luxury of pairing Walmart with designer pieces. I am cognizant that I am privileged! One of my dearest friends, a newly minted lawyer from a very poor background, happily got married in gown she had bought at Goodwill. I wish I could be that un-materialistic!

@Arcadian - Sorry for the delay but I am reporting back that I am happy with the purchase made via Amazon even though the Chloe perfume was 1/2 the price. Even if it was fake, the scent is close enough and still is enjoyable to me so it seems like a win/win situation to me!

Hope this encourages others to try off of Amazon if they were considering it.

Wearing Louis Vuitton Mille Feux today! This fragrance is my new obsession!

I am excited...I just ordered 4 Comme de Garcons samples from Lucky Scent that I decided on a spur of the moment to try. I just love their Black Pepper and have been wearing it often and always receiving compliments about how delicious I smell and I am curious about some of their other perfumes. So ordered them last night and will report back here when I try them.

I ordered Black, Blue Encens, Blue Santal and 2 Man.

I decidedly go for more masculine fragrances than the traditional female perfumes. That has always been my preference since I started wearing perfumes back in the 80s but then it was all the rage if I remember correctly. Women wearing male fragrances.

You might like Costume National Scent Intense. One of my favorites. Intense tea and dry amber. Its got hibiscus but I can barely smell it.

Also Bond No. 9 Bond Street.

@Arcadian Do you have a source for Bond fragrances that is less expensive than regular department stores? Thanks!!!

Thanks Arcadian. Will look into those perfumes. I did try Bond No 9 Bond Street but many years ago. I think I still have that sample. Will try it again. And will also try Costume National Scent Intense. If it's one of your favorites I need to try it! Thank you.

These are the ones I tend to use consistently:
Fragrancenet.com
FragranceX.com
Overstock.com
Amazon.com (amazon proper not their resellers)
BeautyEncounter.com
LilyDirect.com

Lets not also forget
Zulily
HauteLook
RueLala

Lastly
QVC and HSN (yeah really!!)

I'm very picky about who I use and why.

What you need to remember about greymarket perfumes.

You might be getting older stock. Thats not necessarily a bad thing. When a house changes their box or bottle, stores have to do something with the older stuff. Discounters usually buy then resell it.

That also means you may have opportunity to buy a tester. Testers are awesome in my view. Some don't have tops, but some do, always check how they're listed. Some are just in a white box which again not a bad thing. They're also CHEAPER.

The box may or may not look all that great (I've gotten a few of those before, perfume inside has always been fine)

Shipping can sometimes take FOREVER. HauteLook took about 2 months once but it was direct from the manufacturer.

Over the years I've gotten 2 bottles that were not up to snuff, one that was way rancid. They were replaced without issues. yes things can go wrong, perfumes can leak so on. (they should only be sent ground in the US anyway) you call the company and let them know more often than not (unless you're a serial returner) they will ship you another (they often tell you to just destroy the offending bottle)

I still purchase from small boutiques like Luckyscents, MIN NY, Aedes and Twisted Lily, especially for the harder to find stuff I can get nowhere else. There are also exclusives that you can only get from the perfume house period so if thats what I'm after, I pay full price for it.

I will NOT buy brand new Chanel from anyone except Chanel. Its my line in the sand as they are faked so much. (Diors are too, but I don't tend to like much from that house)

Speaking of HauteLook, its where the SOTD came from. Today I'm wearing YOSH Ginger Ciao. I get mostly ginger, sandalwood and coconut, with a tiny hint of bubblegum from the Ylang-Ylang. I don't get any 'lily' unfortunately. I do get a wee bit of plastic something in the perfume, but maybe its the time of year.

Decent lasting power. I find it to be a bit strong but again, likely better in the "winter" down here.

All this discussion has been making me think of the one cologne I worry about. I bought one partially used bottle of Jo Malone White Lilac and Rhubarb cologne on eBay and I still have plenty left. I spent a fortune on it, though, so I keep my eyes on the eBay prices. They range from about $225 to $375 a bottle depending on how knowledgeable the vendor is and the demand for it at the time. I am a bit worried about making sure I have spare bottle for when the time comes! Or should I try Fragrance Matchers?

Deb

PS-I know this isn't high price compared to some perfumes and I actually own some of the priciest in the world. But I guess I know I could always always buy those again if I could come up with the money! Also, I think this one may be my favorite!

Jo Malone has such a bad habit of discontinuing fragrances.

HI:

Arcadian--thank you for keeping the faith and wearing perfume! Goodness knows you've had some rotten weather and dangerous conditions....yet you maintain scents and scentsibility!

cheers--Sharon

@canuk-gal I certainly try. While I can get kinda dogged on the whole weather thing, a good scent does help me relax. Right now I'm wearing Hawaiian Sandalwood oil purchased from Eden botanicals. Mysore trees have been pretty much decimated, Plus they (the trees) are poached heavily there are some other sandalwoods you can get but so very expensive. :cry2:

So I see ... But they make so many ! One - Blackberry / Bey / Cedarwood must owe royalties to my backyard.

I'll be stuck in the Library for a while, methinks (pun holds) - ten is a big number as it is.

Tea for two by l'AP...

Mornings are getting chilly here, so I need more enveloping scents.
Tobacco plus tea, a smoky note and spices and a hint of of dry sweetness - all done without being heavy or cloying. A true unisex Giacobetti masterpiece and one of the few scents I always have to have a fb & backup of...anything else makes me nervous..lol
No reAlly, the thought of this being d/c'd or reformulated gives me panic attacks...

@kipari I've always found her scents to be interesting. they tend to hover above the skin; present but luminescent. She also has a way with woods and rum notes. Diptyque Philosykos her most famous. I recall she did a bunch for L'Artisan though seems to me Bertrand became their goto perfumer.

My favorite(s) of hers runs the gambut from Lubin Idole, to Fredrick Malle En Passant (so gorgeous :kiss2::kiss2::kiss2:), to Honres de Pres Vamp a NY. I of course tried Hermes Hiris...I dont know, sometimes Iris reads carrots for me. I'm not a carrot fan (understatement...lol) and for me it was a big ol musty carrot.

I really have to revisit L'Artisan again as they smell very different to me down here than they did when I lived in Massachusetts.

I admire her ability to work with "heavy" materials and keep them sheer and radiant. We share some favourites (Fredrick Malle En Passant & Honores de Pres Vamp a NY).

I hope l'AP still works for you in the south.
I think they still have some real gems in their line even if some newer stuff was disappointing to me.
I am planning a visit to their boutique in St. Germain to smell a bunch of their perfumes that have been on my list for too long (safran troublant eg).

I think you'll like Safran Troublant. I find it very full bottle worthy even down here Maybe even moreso. I'm not sure why I didn't take to it the first time I smelled it...maybe my nose needed to grow up LOL

Tonight I'm wearing Boadicea the Victorious Ardent. If Intense is for day, Ardent is for night. Roses, Beeswax, saffron. Agarwood here is not too barnyard thankfully, does add a backbone to the scent.

This is such a weird house. Some of the scents smell more like stuff you'd spray in your house..lol they can be good and strong though.
