[I looked through my spreadsheet (yes, I have a spreadsheet of gems) and I might have one item that could tickle your fancy, as it's pink, and rather large, BUT it's light pink and an asscher.

9.6mm, 5.00 cts, light pink tourmaline, Barry Bridgestock

Attaching picture. This sucker is in the safe deposit box, so I'd have to go pull it out for more pics.

It's a lovely lovely stone - but to be honest, I'm looking for something a bit more pink. I'm more inclined to go with a sapphire now actually. Thank you for posting that pic, Freke.

For what you're looking for Phoenix, I'd look to Gene:
http://www.precisiongem.com/Gemstones/Gemstones/spinel.html
http://www.precisiongem.com/Gemstones/Gemstones/Gemstones/pinktourmaline.html
(he doesn't have any pink sapphires listed right now, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have any, or that he doesn't have the rough.)

Btw, rubellite is tourmaline. It's just very red/ruby like tourmaline.

Maybe Peter: http://www.torraca.net/gems/

I'd say Barry, but I don't think he has a lot of bigger spinel/sapphire rough right now. Worth asking though!
http://www.acstones.com/productcart/pc/viewCat_h.asp?idCategory=139

And I'd suggest spinel, because it has a higher refractive index and will show more dispersion than sapphire. Good luck! (And don't forget to post for help in Colored Stones - they like bling pics!)

Dan Stair, 2.00 ct. Oval purple spinel, SP1223, 7.20 x 9.38mm

I keep contemplating keeping this because it has big flashy facets, but I'll post it here for the moment and see if there is any interest. It does have a bit of that half and half extinction going on, but Dan did a great job on getting the spread on this sucker.

Wow!! That's soooo helpful, thank you very much, Freke.

He he, I didn't know that abt rubellite, am such a novice!!

At the risk of sounding even more stupid, why is spinel cheaper than sapphire if it shows more dispersion (and I presume this means that a spinel is more sparkly than a sapphire, assuming everything else is equal/ similar)?

I know! I just wanted to tell you so you could be more "in the know"!

Spinel is a tricky beast. It is quite rare, pretty hard (8 on the Mohs, sapphire is a 9) and for a long time red spinel was mistaken for rubies. In fact, the Black Prince's Ruby is a spinel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Prince's_Ruby

Like a sapphire, it comes in most colors (orange and yellow are said to be very very rare - as in, almost mythological).

Today it's synthesized a lot for class rings because it wears pretty well and it looks pretty. Because of this, and because spinel is lesser known, most people have never heard of it, to the extent that most jewelry store clerks I have ever talked to have said that "all spinel is man made".

As far as being more dispersive, that has to do with a bunch of numbers I skim over (not going to lie!), but it means that it's closer to a diamond, which shoots off rainbows than say beryl, which typically reflects a lot of white light, making it very mirror like. I have a pic of the aqua from the last page that has a big black square in the middle---it's purely reflecting my big black camera...which is not to say that spinel doesn't do that, due to cutting, all stones reflect the environment! (I'll post one of the pics of it doing this.)

It's a very complicated game in colored stones. Each variety has it's own characteristics and quirks. And each stone within that variety has it's own quirks! This is why no two gemstones are alike!

Thanks so much for your very educational post. Gemstones certainly are very interesting and complicated, to say the least.

Btw, I had a typo in my previous post when I first typed it out - meant to say "such a novice". Being "in the know" is definitely good! :))

Thanks again. Threadjack over! :wink2: :))

You have a very impressive collection.   I look fwd to seeing what else you're going to list.

Oh Yay :appl: :wavey: :appl: Are you by any chance thinking about unloading your pure grey spinel ring? If you are, I'd like first dibs on buying it. I've been trying to find a grey spinel to replicate your ring ever since I saw it but ended up sending every stone back cos they just dont look as good as yours. Seriously I could have probably bought your ring for what the return shipping fees on all those stones have cost me so far.

If you are thinking about selling it, I'd happily pay full price  :dribble:

I really love this stone Freke! Do you have any more pics of it? What cost are you thinking of selling it at? Also, pardon my colored stone dumbness but what does half and half extinction mean?

I don't have any more pics (yet!) but I could probably take some Sunday or early next week. We've had drizzly gross (hah! I love rain!) weather for the past few days, OR when I get home the sun is already starting to go down.

$200 was what was paid for it originally.

And half and half extinction is when it's cut so that one side lights up more than the other side (probably the easiest way to put it) I don't mind it as much with this stone because it's cut so well otherwise, and it's still super flashy. When I can more pics, I can try and get some that demonstrate this!

Hey Freke,

How are the colors of:

Dark blue spinel, DS, 6.03mm, .80cts, round
Dark blue spinel, BB, 5.9mm, 1.00cts, round

compared to the 6.9 on DB? prices?

or should I contact you on DB for more info?

Time to rename it Frekebistro...

Can you tell us what the "big project" is besides birthing a baby in a few weeks? ;)) :praise:

This is what I have as far as information goes:

Spinel #1
Dark blue spinel, DS, 6.03mm, .80cts, round
DAN STAIR, .80 ct, 6.03mm blue RB spinel
$80

Spinel #2
Dark blue spinel, BB, 5.9mm, 1.00cts, round
SP-6947 1.00 ct, 5.9mm, dark blue RB spinel Barry Bridgestock
$100

Spinel #3
Dark blue spinel, BB, 6.9mm, 1.45cts, round
SP-7094 Tunduru Spinel(J)1.45 cts., 6.9mm round brilliant[Gec]. This dark blue spinel comes from Tanzania and even though it is dark, it shows quite a bit of dispersion. Flawless at 10x. Barry Bridgestock
$145.00

Spinel #4
For fun, I've added my blue spinel ring since it's also for sale and it's a dark blue. Size 7ish basic 4 prong setting in 14kt wg.
$220
http://diamondbistro.com/category/2...rk-blue-spinel-ring-by-Barry-Bridgestock.html

My opinions:
Spinel #1
Lightest of them
Hint of purple
Decent dose of gray
Smallest
Has a tilt window

Spinel #2
This one has a hint of teal
Still quite dark

Spinel #3
Biggest
Darkest
Hint of gray
I might go so far as to say that this one is almost black

Spinel #4
Decent dose of teal
Darker than #1, lighter than #2
Has an inclusion in the middle above the culet

Note: These pics were all taken under incandescent lighting at night (about ten minutes ago). ETA: Sorry for all of the fingerprints and the last blurry shot!

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Lol!

Well I've been saving up to buy something from a "brand name" (here on PS) craftsman for about two weeks now, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. The problem is that I have so many stones to set that it's hard to pay more than double of what I've ever spent on any prior setting on just one piece. Especially when I can potentially complete about 3 projects with those funds instead. Should I decide to pull the trigger I'll post about it, if I don't, I'll be posting about 3-4 other projects (or maybe buy some colored stones I've had my eye on)! Either way, it'll result in some bling pics!

Spinels from left to right:

-Cushion that I'm not sure I want to sell yet. Definitely has a teal tint, which is not common in spinel.

-Eggplant spinel
SP-6981 1.39 ct, 6.7mm, dark purple RB spinel Barry Bridgestock $130

-Biggest dark blue spinel
SP-7094 Tunduru Spinel(J)1.45 cts., 6.9mm round brilliant[Gec]. This dark blue spinel comes from Tanzania and even though it is dark, it shows quite a bit of dispersion. Flawless at 10x. Barry Bridgestock $145

-Big oval
Dark denim blue spinel, native, 2.18cts, oval $125

Is it dark? are you selling any medium-coloured spinels?

Hi Freke,
I was recommended in another thread to check out your spinels. I'm looking for a square cushion cut spinel between 6-10mm for an engagement ring. Do you have anything like that you might be interested in selling? **please do not post personal contact information on the forum**

Thank you!!

I might, I will have to check in the next day or so. I saw in your thread you are looking at rubellite as well, how do you feel about pink tourmaline?

To be honest, Freke, I don't know much about tourmalines and I haven't had a chance to read up yet. All I know is that I've seen sapphires, spinels and rubelittes (as well as some garnets) in person but never tourmalines, not in pink anyay. The one you posted is very pretty.

I particularly love the sparkles/ scintillation from pink sapphires. I hope that's the right way to describe it! :wink2:

The purple blue is the purple one in the last set of pictures above.

As for the pink spinel, I can attach the vendor photo, but I don't have any pictures of it yet. It's a lovely bright baby pink though, and I have the original info from Dan:

STONE:  Spinel
WEIGHT: .90 Cts.
CUT:  Portuguese Brilliant
DIMENSIONS: 5.81 mm
ORIGIN:  Tanzania
COLOR:  Light Pink
CLARITY: Very Good+ (Eye Clean)
TREATMENT:  None
PRICE (U.S. Dollars):  $145
COMMENTS:   A beautiful baby pink colored spinel that is a bit less purplish looking in person than in the photo.

Hi waitforthat. I don't have any cushion spinels at the moment that I'm thinking about selling, for some reason I don't buy them that often. I'd check out gemcal.com (I think that's the site!) and see what they have. Good luck in your search!
