Gem stone e-ring ideas. help!

Tourmalines will not up well as an engagement ring stone. Many have gone with coloured gemstone e-rings although your gem type will be limited to chrysoberyl, sapphire and spinel. With a lot of care (removing your ring once at home), you can also consider garnet.

For an e-ring you're really limited (if you want a durable/hardy ring) to sapphires, rubies, chrysoberyl and diamonds. If you're a risk taker or not heavy on your jewellery then there are other gemstones you could consider BUT you would have to baby them.

In terms of that toumaline it's beautifully cut but I actually don't like the colour (sorry) it's waaaaaay too olivey looking with quite a lot of yellow.

I'd also like to add that fine quality gemstones are not inexpensive. If you like that colour, then you are fortunate that pricing will be low. The cut is top notch but the colour is lacking. In spite of what is written by the vendor, tourmalines are not brilliant due to their low refractive index and in a step cut, will be far less sparkly than a brilliant modified cut. Colour sets the price for coloured stones, hence that is why it seems lower.

Has your girlfriend shown any interest in a colored stone ering? I would check with her before looking further into one.

And I will also agree with LD that a good colored stone ering will run you the same, if not more, then a diamond.
