Going to Dominican Republic to ask the big ???

Hi!
This is my very first post on this site....kinda of cool never knew about this site until this morning when i was randomly searching. Anyways....ive been going out with my girlfriend for 5 years....so I decided to ask the big question.....my mom says i should just do it on christmas but i want to make it more surprising (not that it wouldnt surprise her on xmas)....but my girlfriend is not bad but kinda of annoyed that we dont take any trips together and the one time that shes going with her family to the dominican i said i couldnt because of work obligations in april. so my idea is that I will surprise her and buy a ticket to go down there and propose. I think she would never expect this because A. she thinks we wont get married till we are 30 and B. I already said I wasnt going on the trip.
What does everyone think, good or bad idea?
When should I purchase a ring?
When should I ask her parents for blessing?

Make sure you have the blessing to go on the trip first!

Never too early to shop for a ring.

Good luck. The Dominican Republic is beautiful. Make sure you go horseback riding. The trails are breath taking.

Buy the ring whenever you want. Sooner the better. Make sure you get a setting that is not sized (so it is returnable if she doesn''t like it). They can give you a ring guard so she can wear it on vacation.

Make sure you get the ring insured before you take it out of the store. Once you make the deposit, you can get an appraisal from the jeweler and send that on to the Insurance agent to start coverage.

Make the effective date the day you will pick up the ring and make sure it has coverage for foriegn countries.

I think you should buy the ring As soon as possible. Just make sure you let the parents know your intentions and make them swear that they will not let her know. You don''t HAVE to stay in Dominican Republic as long as they stay there. But, the important thing is that you go down there, surprise your sweetheart, and, give her a proposal she will never forget and have something to tell to her girlfriends and associates for the rest of her life.
