I need to learn more about cut, esp. I read Wink''s article on this site but want some more reading as I feel I still don''t get it that well.

Thanks.

Palagems has quite a few buying guides that are good.

You might want to invest in a copy of Richard W. Wise's 'Secrets of the Gem Trade' - it's one of my favourites and very reader-friendly with lots of pictures.

Richard Hughes has an amazing book - basically the definitive text - on 'Rubies and Sapphires' - it's due for a re-print and I'm desperate to get my hands on it, it's SERIOUSLY expensive on all the reseller sites. He does have some of the chapters on his website though.

Renee Newman does a lot of buying guides, but I'm not that fussed on them - though I'm sure other's may disagree.

Really it depends how obsessed you intend to be!

FI is looking sadly at the pile of his books that I have evicted to make room for my evergrowing collection of gemmology books, and I'm wondering if we have any spare walls for more bookcasing!

I like RW Wise's book too and they now make it in soft cover. I was just in his shop last week...very nice and super knowledgeable. Also has an amazing collection of things in his store!

Sorry Pandora! His store is just fabulous...and I have the good fortune of having grown up in the town right next door, so I always pop in when I go to visit my parents. YOU could go visit my parents and pay a visit!

Thanks all. Will order the Wise book. I find that pictures are great (worth a thousand words) so that works for me. Will go look at Pala.

Thanks so much Oh-People-of-Great-Knowledge ! !

If you have access to a friendly dealer, there is nothing like handling a number of stones to learn about them.
