Saw this ring at Lang’s and would love to see what folks think of the center stone.

Emerald, or green beryl?

Beryl. Colour is very pleasing but far too light for emerald. Interestingly enough, AGL called it emerald.

I abstain as I have not read the Green Beryl thread in detail!

This ring is so beautiful! Is the only difference saturation of color, or more than that? Should green beryl be markedly more affordable than emerald? Just trying to learn.

It is extremely light in color, evidenced by the fact it still looks pale against a dark background. I would be hesitant to call it an emerald, but that moniker does tend to give it more value. I would call it a seafoam green beryl. I suppose the absence of iron as the chromophore and perhaps the presence of vanadium and/or chromium as the coloring agent, might have been what AGL surmised it to be?

@chrono Thanks as always for the teaching and happy holidays!

@T L Thank you, I was hoping you’d weigh in! I voted beryl myself but wanted to see what the experts here thought esp since Lang is quite reputable and AGL called it an emerald—your explanation re Fe/etc is greatly appreciated!

You’re welcome. I’m not an expert, but it’s just my opinion, The most important thing is that you are paying a fair price for the item, and you know all it’s treatments, and that YOU love it.

I think in this case, most of the value is based on its Tiffany & Co provenance, and being Art Deco.

Emerald, or green beryl?

They are very high integrity and do not over-call anything. Almost everything has a report. Have bought from them before. I saw that ring and loved it.

At that clarity and size and hue, I would "think" of it as green beryl. It seems like that designation no longer exists so I would not ding them for calling it emerald. Spouse has a similar, much smaller, and slightly bluer one.

@LilAlex Thanks for taking the time! I’m actually more drawn to the lighter blue/greens aka non trade ideals. I think they are soft/dreamy—lucky spouse! I’m sure it’s a gorgeous ring.

I live around the corner from Lang’s here in SF and I too feel like they strive to represent things fairly. I would not fault them in this case for going with the expert AGL classification.

With that said, I could see how this shade could lead to differences of personal opinion. Not surprised to see on here a majority vote for beryl.

Colombia origin (if accurate) suggests low chromium emerald to me, hence the light colour.

@Nick_G Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge! I just love gemology tidbits and pearls of wisdom like yours re the low chromium.
