I got this ring off eBay from the UK for $104 last week. I loved the style of it, and I figured it was a safe bet even if the stones weren’t genuine. I bought it knowing they were probably not genuine, but I didn’t ask the seller any questions. The description read, “Emerald and diamond cluster ring.” Hallmarks are for 9 carat gold with the symbols placing the ring as manufactured after the new system was implemented in the 70’s. It weighs 2.35 grams on my kitchen scale.

The ring is just so dainty and pretty IRL, I really love it! There is a crack in the center green stone. It doesn’t appear to touch the surface. I can see the crack in my loupe, but I can’t make it out with my naked eye at a few inches away... The stones do seem very window-y if I hold it in my fingers, but not so much when worn.

The diamonds are “eh,” but they appear to be single cuts—some diamonds have better faceting than others. I cleaned it by soaking in warm water with dawn and brushing with a soft brush. I wasn’t too aggressive with it, but I wonder what the diamonds would look like if I did!

The makers mark is CJ or GJ, it’s very hard for me to see it even with the loupe!

Any ideas on the green stones? I see my favorite vintage/antique dealer next month and will wear the ring to the market that’s scheduled. :D I have wanted a gypsy set “star” ring like this for years!

What a beautiful ring! I love the style. I have nothing to offer about the green gems but I suspect other may have thoughts.

Thanks! I do love the style, I’m glad I finally own one like this now!

I really couldn't tell you. I have seen emeralds that are a light color, and in fact light colored emeralds are often more "clean" than strongly colored emeralds. I don't know of a way to test them other than having a gemologist test them, however. Synthetic emerald fluoresces red much more strongly than natural emerald (long wave UV), so that is a test if you know they are emerald but not if synthetic vs natural.

I can't tell if they are real or not but I still want to say that your ring is lovely. I really like the design and I'd bet that you'll be wearing this beauty a lot.

Cool ring! Are the stones gypsy set?

Yes, they’re all set flush into the band—they do have little beads around all the stones, so maybe not a true “gypsy set?”
