Hi everyone! My friend and I will attend a local gem show next month. She has never been to one. She would like a very green stone. I advised her to a get a green tourmaline from Kenya or Tanzania. She wants affordable and wearable, so even though demantoid, tsavorite are lovely, they are expensive. Plus, demantoid is softer than other garnet species. Since she wants to wear in heavy rotation as a right hand ring, I did not advise peridot or zircon either. Am I missing a stone? Should she be able to get something nice between a carat and 2 carats for $150-$300?

Is she open to cabochon, which is less expensive and less chip-y than faceted?

I am not sure Chrono. I will ask her. My guess is that she wants it faceted. Would putting it in a protective setting help?

Green tourmaline should be a good stone option. I always favor more protective settings that lie close to the hand because I'm clumsy :-) If she's going to wear the ring frequently, it might be a good option for her ring, too.

Okay. Thank you! I will suggest a protective setting. I was seriously wracking my brain trying to think of another option for her. She does love tourmaline. She has a pink tourmaline ring already. It is in a protective setting, so at least I know she likes that style.

Sounds like a fun project! There’s a lot of green trourmaline out there right now. It’s my personal favourite. I could suggest a couple of precision cutting vendors if you’re open to buying from somewhere other than the gem show. Is that a hard point?

If I were buying for myself, I’d love to use a precision cutting vendor. She wants to see the stones in person and does not feel comfortable purchasing online. One of the vendors I’m going to have her visit is an excellent cutter. I just hope he has some in stock.

Understandable !! It takes a while to get used to buying online with confidence especially on sites with no return policy like LT. I hope she finds what she’s looking for!

I hope she finds something she likes too!

Also Chromediopsides are nice and affordable (30-80 /ct). Sometimes they are dark, but there are very fine stones out there too. Green Chrysoberyl is an alternative, though normally expensive.
Depends on tone which she prefers also chrysoprase can make very nice stones.....
So keep eyes open and much luck
