Hi everyone,
I am thinking of buying this grey spinel. It is a little over 3 carats, with measurements of 8.24MM X 7.90MM X 5.87MM with SI clarity. I am waiting for the vendor to reply as to why the gem is SI as it looks clear to me. I am new to colored stones and this will be my first real purchase. The price is $750. Does that seem ok? It is hard to find a larger spinel it seems.5A92118A-009A-46AD-A6D6-A771CC440A4E.jpegF8DD7F7A-FE14-45ED-9633-7D77109E4910.jpeg954543AB-26AE-4D66-81F2-58140C2CE94F.jpeg0EF4D83A-56E4-42CC-9C01-5E3D479ABF22.jpeg2637F9E7-F712-4C81-8192-B1582AB52373.jpeg395B4839-1580-4EA8-8B59-47C3D8E05DD0.jpeg

I really like the medium tone. And it looks fairly neutral gray -- neither warm nor cool. That's another plus, imo.

Def a little asymmetric, which is best shown in the fourth photo and which looks like it was shot on-axis.

I think the price is probably OK.

I would prefer an independent report.

Purpley. I’m not crazy about the cut which to me in a stone like this seems like I’d put more of an importance on that than say - a cornflower sapphire.

Have you seen this? (I mean I’d offer half obviously ) lol

It looks like a beautiful spinel and the price is reasonable. I like the cushion shape and the cut is good- a bit deep (this is where you are paying for a higher carat weight but it will face up in the 2.5 plus carat range of precision cut stones) but still a good cut spinel.

In my experience spinels go two ways. They look great in indoor light and outdoor light and may even turn metallic in sunlight or they look good in indoor light and black out or go dead in bright outdoor/sunlight. That remains to be seen on the spinel you posted.

Thank you for your input, I love the color as well. I can’t see the asymmetry as I am such the novice. I hope I do not find that bothersome. Is an independent report something I can request from them or get after?

I would not pay to get a report for a grey spinel.

Yes that is a beautiful stone. More the size I would prefer but the rounded corners on the cushion isn’t something I like as much. I do like that it is flawless!
I hadn’t thought of offering half on these auctions. Do they actually take?

So interesting. I’ve only had a diamond, tanzanite, mystic topaz and a lab pad sapphire from Gene. I am looking forward to the spinel.

You never know if you don’t try. And usually these places I’ve found will take a fair amount off their listing. But to be fair in a dick on eBay and offer half or less on many things lol

I may be wrong.

On the 4th pic, the "bottom" is straight but the "top" dips down to the left, no? Similar thing on the 1st pic (the "height" on the left is less) but I am less confident that the camera is square to the stone in that one. It's subtle and not bothersome.

I guess maybe it has some purple to it and that's why I like it. I recognized it as appealing but did not note the hue at first. It has a very crisp, "tailored" look!

I do like the purple in it and it is still gray. I am beginning asymmetry but opposite of where you do, LOL.

The seller replied as to why the stone is considered SI. My question is will these inclusions cause the stone to crack when set?

Hi,
I have attached a pic of the stone under torch light..
there are two feather inclusion visible under torch..
that’s why mentioned as SI.
it’s an eye clean stone.C22C4463-9768-44DA-9D68-CDEA386D16DE.jpeg

Pretty candid photo from the seller, imo.

I will let others weigh in on significance. I can not tell if the one on the right (in the picture) reaches the girdle which could impact bezel-setting. Or if either one is surface-reaching. Generally there is less excitement around feathers in the pavilion where there will not be a prong.

I was burned once with some undisclosed features like this from a BH-preferred cutter so I am biased against it now.

Decent return policy? I can't recall from upthread. But this level of disclosure increases my confidence in the vendor.
