Earlier this month, my fiance picked out her lovely wedding dress for our Kauai wedding this February. We are now on me. Yikes! We'd love some suggestions. What would look good with a dress like the one she picked out? Her dress is obviously non-traditional, yet not completely...

*DF's thought was that a casual modern sort of blazer, fitted shirt (untucked?), no tie, nice trousers, and sandles might make for a good casual sort of look. I could see a nice beaded necklace with this look perhaps.

*Another look I've thought of is that of the late JFKs: a navy blue, charcoal or black tropical wool suit with a white shirt and dark tie. This would be more of a timeless / classic look and could be done with either cream coloured or matching trousers.

*I also kind of like this seersucker from Jcrew, though I'm unsure of the tan color for the whole thing.

That's all I've got. I do sweat very easily, however, in February I should be relatively safe...I think. Thoughts?

i can help with this one maybe! we got married in kauai and we got suit rentals from a place on the island...they were great to work with and super easy going. the suits were something like $100 each with everything including shoes. we ended up going with black classic suits and then they wore white shirts and a soft sage green tie. it looked great. they WERE hot (it was in may too so it was really warm!!)...but they only had to wear the outfit during the ceremony, afterwards we gave all the groomsmen and dads Tommy Bahama shirts as their gifts and they went off and changed into those. for the most part there wasn't much complaining from the men at all and they just put their jackets on before the ceremony.

personally i am not a fan of the whole really casual beach khaki and white shirt look for the wedding, but that is just because i wanted it to look more formal for pictures...at least to have a few formal shots for posterity's sake since the bride IS wearing the white dress so why not have something for the parents to coo over that looks more like a 'real wedding' (in old fashioned parent speak)..and then for the reception they changed their shirts and all the gals changed into flip flops so it got really casual for the party! so both looks were really fun.

I'm hoping that if we have a garden wedding on the island that will help with any issue I might have with the heat. I really like the idea of wearing a suit; but I wonder what it will look like with my fiance's dress, which has a less formal look to it.

Renting is an option, but I might prefer to buy if I go the suit route (unless it's too much money).

I like the idea of you in a dark suit jacket and linen slacks. Maybe if you did it in the evening it would be cooler, and men''s shirts come in very very light versions for wearing under summer suits. I also think that your bride''s lovely dress can be ''fancied up'' easily with accessories if you decide to be a smidge more formal.

I also love guys in untied bowties and think it would be great to have a dusk ceremony with you in a white shirt, dark jacket, undone tie and slacks.

Good luck! With the end of summer upon us, most of the men''s linen clothes are on sale.

if you have a suit and it''s just you then that could work, you could even ''casual'' it up a bit by having no tie and an open collar on the shirt...i think that would be a nice blend of more casual/but still wedding attire kind of thing. i personally think a suit can work with a ton of dresses because think about when you attend a wedding, do you wear a suit? what does she wear? a silk knee-length dress or something right? and i think that looks appropriate.

greg has a ton of suits for work, but i wanted him to match his ''guys''...so thats why i had them all just rent. but if it was just him and me and no others, i would have just had him wear one of his own suits most likely and gotten a new tie.

I''m jealous! I''ve already lost the groom''s attire battle and he''s now wearing shorts.

Personally I love the tan linen look for a beach wedding but it sounds like you''d prefer more formal look. It''s a shame that it''s so hard to find linen in darker colors since it''s so suited to a beach wedding.

Have you talked to your bride about your outfit concerns? When my fi brought his worries about us not matching up, we were able to work out a compromise. (i.e. I lost and had to fight a reargaurd action to avoid total defeat or a stalemate) Basically I can wear a white wedding dress as long as it''s informal and not too fussily decorated, and he can wear shorts as long as they''re brand-new and nice looking.

She originally wanted me in a Tux, because she thinks I look sexy. ^_^;; And I wore one in college choir the year we met. Well, who am I to argue, except I said absolutely NO WAY. heh Really though, I know a nice-cut suit will be even more romantic if that is the way we decide to go. At this point, I think that''s probably the best option. When I picture myself on the big day, I can''t picture myself in a super casual outfit. I want to look good and different than I would on any other day. I think that makes sense.

My wonderful husband really is prone to sweating. I was worried that he''d catch fire at our beach wedding in the Virgin Islands
this July, but he survived it.

He wore a tropical wool suit and a tie. The groomsmen wore similar pants, and white button down shirts. If I had my way, he would have
worn a darker suit (I honestly just think he looks better in darker colors,) but wanted to go with tan.

We all went with flip flops. Here we are (shameless opportunity to show more pictures.)

Tybee - just had to say again how cute & happy & in love the two of you look! I think the tan looks great with his coloring & blends in with the beach surroundings in a way that too dark might not ...

For our barn wedding -- we picked a white linen flat bottomed shirt to be worn untucked with an open collar, black one button tux jacket & jeans combo for the Groom, Best Man & Dude of Honor. The shirts we picked are traditional cuban wedding attire for men "gua .." something. There's no Cuban connection for us, except Babalooooo .. a tendency for me to think I'm Lucille Ball in an episode of I LOVE LUCY??

(In a funny side note I guess one time when we were talkig about how CASUAL we wanted things to be .. he swears that I said a white TSHIRT would be okay. He had that in his head for months ... like HOW COOL .. I GET TO WEAR A TSHIRT with a Tux Jacket! That took some undoing on my part -- not fun since he'd already bragged to the Best Man about the whole thing ...

ETA: Why if it isn't Mr. & Mrs. LEMON PIE. Gorgeous as ever. Love the flowers in that shot too .. and your dress is kinda similar to the one posted ...

A t-shirt eh? Poor guy was probably devistated when he realized his error.

You couples all look very well put together. :) And Mara, you are like 20 years younger than I thought you were! No offense here, but you come off so motherly and wise that I thought you were older. :)

lol!
Bring on the pictures Mara!
I really love the look of your husband''s dark suit!

And (blush) gee, thanks Deco! I need to stop shamelessly posting my pics on other people''s threads!
But with your compliments, how will I ever stop?
We considered guyabera shirts too, actually, now I can''t remember why we didn''t.

anitract, Brightspot''s husband also wore a darker suit that they bought somewhere. for their
wedding in Jamaica... I have no idea how to post
a link, but I''ll see if I can find her planning stuff.
