i wanted to see who here actually bought their tuxedo for the wedding versus renting one... i think i may rent in order to save some money... are the ones that you rent just as nice?

what do you all think.

We're not using tuxedos, but to answer your question about them being "as nice"...no. They're not. But if you have no need to own a tuxedo, there's no need to purchase one. We go to a lot of black tie events so FI owns a tux (two actually--yet he's still not wearing one at our wedding, lol), and has hated it whenever he has had to wear a rented one for a wedding.

My FI is renting his tux (we actually just got that all taken care of yesterday). Rental tuxes are not as nice as purchased tuxes in that they cannot be altered to fit you perfectly. The pants are adjustable, etc. but the jacket will not be fitted perfectly to you. Basically, a rental tux won''t have the tailored look of a purchased and altered tux, but it also doesn''t make sense to purchase a tux if you know you''ll never wear it again, IMHO.

DH bought his tuxedo (because he thought it was too sentimental to rent), but we still rented tuxedos for his best men--he had 2, which required some coordination on DH''s part since he wanted them to be the same style.

so why do girld buy their wedding dresses.. why not rent them? since your only going to wear them once!

just wanted to throw that out there for debate.. i know im probably out numbered on these forums!

Funny you should say that. I had been thinking "If I ever start a business, renting wedding dresses would be a good one!" If such a thing existed, I would TOTALLY have done it. I'm sure I'm not the only one. It makes way more sense. A guy might use his tux again. A woman never will. Why doesn't this exist??!

FI, on the other hand, was insistent that he buy his. Mind you, there are occasions where he needs one. He ended up spending more on his tux than I did on my dress, but it's a stunner and fits him perfectly.

If you look online, you'll find that you can buy them at a substantial discount that makes it not much more than renting. But FI got his at Nordstrom's because he's unusually tall and slim by American standards which made it hard to find something for him without good professional help.

We just placed the order for the guys'' tuxes this past weekend. My FI wouldn''t need to have one for anything else so buyng a tux didn''t make sense. He could have chosen to just wear a suit but he wanted the more formal look (I think he also considers it more special for some reason). I don''t know, personally, the idea of renting a tux that someone else (a stranger, especially) has worn kind of creeps me out. I had no idea you could even rent shoes.

Buying your own tux would fit you better than renting one. For that very reason, women buy their dress. A wedding dress should fit like a glove and make a woman feel beautiful. My friend looked into renting a gown and found that you can''t alter it and if you ruin the dress, you might as well buy it.

CHeaper yes. As nice? No. I''m still trying to talk John into buying another black suit instead. He has one, but doesn''t want to wear that one. He also doesn''t want to make his nephew (and BM) feel obligated to buy a new suit (which I totally get) to match him if he buys a suit. That''s the reason he''s leaning toward renting. We''ll see what happens.

My FI is tall and thin and ever in skinny Colorado, rented tuxes would look off. As he was never going to wear it again, he is just buying a very nice suit that will get reused. Even though he is well dressed, I just don''t see him in tails anyway.
He is wearing a vest and matching tie so it will still be a formal look.

I was surprised to read your post, because I didn''t know renting wedding gowns wasn''t common! I know of several bridal salons here with rental packages.

FI bought a Dinner Jacket - which is what I think you guys call a tux? - for his brother''s wedding in Chicago last year. His old one was from first year at Oxford and was rather worn out.

He''s bought an amazing Morning Dress from Canali - he''s a tricky shape and we tried everywhere in Saville Row and Jermyn Street. The Canali just fitted perfectly.

He''s likely to have a lot of things to wear it too and so it makes sense financially - also the fabric/cut etc are SO much nicer than the hire ones.

for my budgeting - how much does the average tux approx cost? how much is it to rent a tux?

I would shy away from renting just because i have seen the bottom or so many wedding dresses. always dirty. I can imagine what they would charge to purchse it after you have stained it.

Also, in Los angeles there is one place that rents them but they are all top deisgners so you still pay almost 1K to rent it. and you cant alter is. so that doesnt work out too well for us 5 footers.

DH already owned a black tux when we got married in '03...but we wanted a different look for our Sunday afternoon, outdoor wedding at a country club and went with champagne colored tuxes for all the guys, including him, so he rented for that day. He had no problems with the quality or fit of the rented tux...everything went smoothly as far as that!

Not to veer to far off topic... we were going to rent tuxes. My friend did it but they used their own shoes, shirts and ties. A bit much... I''m wondering if asking guys to wear black suits works or not. Is it hard to match up black suits depending on brand/quality etc?
